My experience (look below for a review on the venue itself):

I am from cthe US and currently stationed in Germany. I recently took a trip with my boyfriend (who had never been to Frankfurt) to Pulse Nightclub. We arrived at around12 midnight and were greeted by a door man who stated planly that we were "not coming in". We had not even opened our mouths to greet nor made any gestures toward the door whatsoever before he said this. I politely asked if there was a problem and he responded with, "I do not have to tell you a reason." I looked over at the owner who was standing at the doorway listening to this exchange and avoiding looking at us and stated that I was confused and asked if there was a private event (thinking that maybe it got lost in translation with the door man). The owner responded with, "I do not know you" and walked away.

We were not drunk, we did not argue, we did not put up any resistance whatsoever, we have no preceding poor reputation; simply, these two guys had decided that they did not want us in there. What was even more strange is that I had been there a few weeks before with a British friend who knew the owner who was, on this occasion, very drunk and touchy and who reluctantly let me in.

I don't understand what the issue was this time though. We were there to bring business. We do not have fights or get beligerant and drunk and have never had any problems in the past with anyone. I was told by other friends that they do not care for Americans and sometimes they will just flat out refuse certain people on a whim. They can get away with this because they are the only weekly regular running club venue for GLBT people in the city. They have no competition and therefore can do whatever they like which usually means mistreating patrons.

I have worked in gay clubs in the past, promoting or tending and even at the more exclusive parties that I was fortunate to attend, when we were having special events or weren't able to let people in, we would always at least give them a reason or go out of our way to either provide suggestions of another venue that they could visit on that specific night or let them know about about an event that we were having on a different night as to maintain business.

I don't expect special treatment as an American, but I do expect some hospitality as a guest and paying customer. Every other European city that I have visited, including other cities in Germany, has club staff that have been warm and hospitable. Hardly the case here. Anyway, that is my rant. Below is a review of the actual venue.

A review on the venue:

Pulse is a restaurant/coffee shopby day. I'm not sure what the food is like but I bet that there's no doorman or patrons having been kept from enjoying a cup of coffee. For that, I have no comment...it might be a delight- who knows???

At night, they turn the joint into a lounge/bar/dance club. There is a room for dancing to house and light trance in the back that has a very interesting odor- probably secondary to those patrons who do not believe in showering regularly or wearing deodorant... I digress. The DJs are usually decent. I saw ThunderPu**y DJ a set there. She was outstanding! Great mix of both recognizable and obscure tracks that made the crowd move. I was told that on most nights it's just going to be a lot of pop music and pop remixes per the usually resident DJs. If that is your thing, then this is the place for you (if you get in). Otherwise if you're looking for more interesting or obscure music, stuff that could shake a city like Miami, you'll have to go to one of the monthly events in other venues or random parties.

If your smoker, this is your paradise. Most everybody smokes (A LOT!) and although there is a space designated for smokers in this club, many times the patrons just dont give a rip and smoking will occur on the dance floor and in the bar areas. Basically, whatever you're wearing that night will likely to need to be wrapped in a plastic bag and incinerated or immediately sent to the wash when you return home because it will smell as though hundreds of people have blown their secondhand smoke directly into the very fibers of your outfit. Shoes are no exception.

There is a place downstairs which is hot in temperature only, where pop and hip-hop music (no remixes) are often played. This area would be fun if it weren't completely overcrowded. There's really no where to move and many patrons will do their best not to excuse themselves when they step on your feet, knock you over, (sorry to those who are very short) or just push you out of their way.

The drinks are very expensive so be prepared to spend a lot of money. What is nice is that there is no entrance fee but you will make up for this in spending on drinks- beer is the exception. Note that if you don't speak German, expect to have eyes roll at you when you go to order drink or attempt to speak to the Zoolander-like crowd. I do speak a little German, and was able to get by without any major problems though I could distinctly hear a sigh whenever I ordered.

The club is open kinda late but usually starts to fizzle out between 3 and 4am as people move onward to wherever their next destination is.

The crowd, in terms of looks is....Ohhhh- Kaaaay. Nothing special and you'd expect more considering how exclusive the owner thinks the place is. Maybe a few model types, most in between, lots of guys putting things into a nostril, a range of ages but mostly an older crowd. If you want the younger, cuter crowd, head elsewhere. Hardly a muscle in sight at this place.

This could be a fun place if it weren't for the staff.
