Note - webiste says the mansion is open Saturdays - at the moment it is not. Appointment only. Mostly this is a walk around, look at old buildings, imagine context and snap photos. The mill is open, but not that much to see, no working machinery. Volunteers man the blacksmith shop. The general store had a very engaging docent on duty who spend generous time with informed coversation. The kind of place that wuld be good for elementary school groups. There is a popular summer concert series for people of the surrounding area. No concessions.

Jerusalem Mill Village has several historical attractions, and today I focused on the General Store located at the east end of the village. It has an historical/educational marker related to a Civil War era raid by a Confederate States of America (CSA) brigade led by Maryland's Major Harry Gilmore. The store is currently set to feature the 1930s, but dates back further. There is one room devoted to Civil War artifacts and a sign outside denotes that the store in on the " On 11th July 1864, the CSA brigade in fact "requisitioned" much of its stock on a pass through Harford County in an effort to disrupt train and communication systems of the North.
What led me back to village was curiosity about a large old stone structure one mile north at the intersection of Old Joppa and Old Mountain Roads. This area is apparently named Stockton.
Looking through state historical site applications, I learned this stone building was called Bond's Shop, which was also once a stage coach stop for those traveling from Bel Air to Bush. According to the historical report, during a Civil War invasion, Major Harry Gilmore on July 10, 1864 camped in this stagecoach building over night on their way to burn the Pennsylvania Railroad Bridge across the Gunpowder River.
In addition to photos of the Store at the village, I have uploaded a couple of Bond's shop is its current condition. No signage is available to explain the history of the shop, which is a shame. Marylanders were of mixed position during the Civil War, and this excursion through the area demonstrates that.

Stopped by after visiting the nearby Jerico covered bridge. Unfortunately, due to COVID, none of the building were open to visitors. There is a walking trail one can take from the village to the bridge and other areas.

Some beautiful structures. It was a great spot for family photos, dog walkers, and history buffs. Each of the docents we encountered were eager to share.

After traveling to Maryland since the '90s, I was finally able to visit this historic village. You are able to go inside the mill which includes the visitor's center and museum. Check museum hours if you want to visit when open. There are walking trails, picnic areas, the Little Gunpowder Falls (river), and other historical buildings to discover. Hint- there is no waterfall. The brochure will explain! To help you, pick up a brochure/map to help you explore the village. If you love covered bridges, there is one for you!

Although I had heard of Jerusalem Mills for many years, it was only on a whim that I decided to take the back road from Kingsville to Bel Air and "discovered" the place for myself just as I crossed the Little Gunpowder River into Harford County. A walk around the premises and neighborhood reveals not just the mill but older houses and the calming river. I pass through often now to observe seasonal differences. There is a workshop that is sometimes open to the public. Another older building is being reconstructed for a community center. A little drive south along the river reveals a covered bridge. Inside the Mill Museum there are some displays of interest, but more interesting is to discuss with the volunteer staff about the history of the area. One can sign up for a newsletter, too. Any season is a good time to explore Jerusalem Mills.

The dedicated volunteers at this really cool old site could surely do an even better job at the historical reenactments and demonstrations if there were just a few changes and efforts to clean up a few things. For example, I would have liked the different exhibits and artifacts to focus on one time period. Instead, the Miller's house has a (very well done) mid-1700s home exhibit, the general store building has stuff from the Civil War but also a 1930s dress and a lot of clutter. There were old coca-cola bottles mixed with a 1800s wood stove. I wasn't clear what time period we were supposed to be learning about. Would be very satisfying to curate it down to a specific period (or even 100 years), and get rid of anything else. The woodworking demonstration was particularly cool, especially for my sons, with a very engaging docent who let the kids touch lots of stuff. The general store likewise should be done to a specific time period, with much less clutter, and focus on the few souvenirs that fit the time period + some edible things that represent the time period as well. The actual Mill building could have used a really outgoing docent, and maybe some big, easy to understand (for kids and everyone else) visual descriptions of what happens in a Mill (since the actual mill works aren't in place anymore). I really liked it, but I think I could love it...
