This was a wonderful outdoor theater for Shakespeare plays produced by the Utah Shakespeare Festival. It has been replaced by the new (2016) Engelstadt Theatre across the street, still on the grounds of the Southern Utah University. It's part of the new Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts which has a small black box theater, art museum and the pre-existing Randall L. Jones indoor theater.

Plays are no longer being staged in this outdoor theater. It has been replaced by a new facility for outdoor Shakespeare plays and others. The new outdoor stage is wonderful, but the old Adams Theater is such a keepsake and reminder of all the things most terrific about the festival there in Cedar City. The last time I visited, the gate to the stage was open and I stood on the stage looking out at the seats and remembering all the times I had been in one of those seats enjoying a play, enjoying the festival, and thanking Fred Adams and all involved over the years for making this festival such a delight.

This is an added feature of the festival. They are Wittenberg plays unknown to us. Actors read the parts to attendees without all the scenes and props. These are usually very good. If the are good they can be put on next years plays. This year is pearl bailey......and is being presented at the festival in 2018!

Thanks for your review! We are thrilled to offer a reading of Pearl's in the House as part of our 2017 new play series and then premiere the fully-staged play in our 2018 season.

It is kind of a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, which means there is an open part in the middle... which is great, until it rains... which it did. We had a brief 20 min break so the audience and actors could take cover, and then started again...and then after only 10 min, another 45 min break. It was VERY unpleasant and I was VERY disappointed. They need to find a way to cover that open section...

Thanks for your review. A retractable roof was not able to be part of this building's original design. The rain is frustrating when it does happen, but we are all committed to "the show must go on." If rain is forecast, a rain poncho is a good idea. If you are seated on the main floor, rows A-F, you could get rained on. Most of the other locations in the theatre are covered by the structure.

The Adams Shakespearean Theatre has been closed down because the new Center for the Arts project included an outdoor theatre and a black box theatre and the Southern Utah Museum of Art. It's an amazing center.

Thanks for your post! The Adams Shakespearean Theatre was retired in 2015 and replaced by the Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre in 2016. While the structure of the Adams Theatre is still there for a few more years if you want to go take a look, there are no performances there any more. We love our new home and new theatres!

The play we saw was awesome. This review is more of a be aware ... When I phoned the number for tickets to see if any were available. I was told that the cost would be $539.00 American because they were an American company -- this would have been around $700.00 Canadian. I was devastated --a Canadian city and what should have been a Canadian event run by an American company. However, we decided to go to Stratford anyway a d check the box office. We did get tickets at the Festival Theatre for " As You Like It,' The prices were between $25.00--$85.00. It was a once in a lifetime for me, so I was glad we were able to find something reasonable.

Thanks for your review, but you may have confused the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah, USA, with the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. I suspect you actually attended the Stratford production of As You Like It, which is part of their 2016 season. The Utah Shakespeare Festival will be including a production of As You Like It as part of the 2017 season in Cedar City Utah, and ticket prices range from $20-$73 (American).

Utah Shakespeare Festival has replaced the beloved old Adams Theater with a stunning new theater center. The focal point is the Engelstad Theater--keeps the intimacy of the Adams, with same seating plan and thrust stage, with beautiful wood accents, discreet elevators, more restrooms (!), lovely balcony level patio and refreshment area with great mountain view. USF's many years of planning produced a friendly, well-organized center with very family-friendly greenshow area, the beautiful glass-and-wood-walled Randall indoor theater now integrated with its new neighbor and a new small indoor theater for new works. I enjoyed the great productions even more (and I've attended since '95) and the whole experience should reach the hearts of both veteran and new attendees. This is a very special and moving place. Deep thankyous to founder Fred Adams, David Ivers, Brian Vaughn, R. Scott Philips and all the cast and crew.

We enjoyed, Much Ado About Nothing, and, Henry V, this trip. I always prefer the comedy, but my daughter, the theater actor, loved them both and was amazed at the sets, acting, and directing, as well as the stagehands. We happened to be there for the first unofficial run of Henry V where there was a prop mishap. A banner did not fall to dramatize the fall of The country. The play was stopped and the techs came out with a motorized lift to get it down as it obstructed the stage. It was neat to see all that goes into the production and made us appreciate the shows all the more.

Thanks for your review. Our preview performances allow us to add audiences as the final element in the creation of the work on our stages. From time to time, there are elements that don't cooperate, as was the case when you saw Henry.

We happened to be at both the last performance of a Shakespeare comedy and the last performance of a Shakespeare tragedy in the Adams Shakespearean Theater this past weekend. Each performance was amazing in itself. And each of the two ended with a special ceremony honoring the theater and the past productions. The cast from Taming of the Shrew came out on Thursday night and each actor shared a famous line from one of the comedies. On Friday, King Lear 's cast each performed a line from one of the tragedies. A cake reception in the courtyard followed both. It was touching to see these special honors. We were glad to be a part of the farewells. Thank you to all who provided this for us.

Those were bittersweet evenings for all of us. So glad you were a part of it, and we hope you can join us next year in the Engelstad Shakespeare Theater's first season.
