Great collection, unfriendly hours for out of town researchers

This was the perfect setting for a work shop that I attended. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere suitable for an all day event.

HSP has a treasure trove of manuscripts, maps and documents. The staff is reasonably efficient in pulling and delivering requested items, the reading room is adequate if undistinguished as a place to work, and the staff is certainly friendly and professional. These are all important positives for researchers. However, for anyone coming from out of town with limited time (or money to spend on overpriced Philly hotels and parking) the hours that the library is open to researchers is among the most user-unfriendly I've experienced. Closed on two days many libraries are open (Mondays and Saturdays), the library opens at 12:30 and closes in only five hours on half the days it is open to researchers. It stays open seven hours on Fridays and only on Wednesdays is the reading room open for a normal 8 hour workday, albeit 12:30-8:30 at night. Strange (why not normal business hours, 9:00-5:00?) The $8 daily fee for researchers is also on the very high end for such repositories, particularly for a five-hour day.

I would hope that the management could see it's way clear to expand hours or even be amenable to special requests for out of state researchers with whatever credentials are necessary in order to be more respectful of the challenges inherent in traveling for research. Also, how about a $25 Membership pass for a week?

The visit of out-of-town friends to research their family’s history at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) reminded me that the HSP is a unique depository for local and regional history from the 17th to the 19th century. It also contains a trove of ethnic and immigrant materials that, combined, make this historical collection one of the finest in the country, other than those at the Library of Congress. For example, who would have known that the Society cares for such national treasures as the first draft of the United States Constitution, an original printer’s proof of the Declaration of Independence, and the earliest surviving American photograph. Not to mention the more than 600,000 books and other printed materials; 20 million manuscripts and over 300,000 graphics items! I wonder how many published books were researched here and how many family secrets have been revealed in private researches such as by my friends from New Mexico.

The Society’s was founded in 1824 and moved to 1300 Locust Street in 1910, its current stately and fireproof location.

Enjoy a leisurely visit; I shall soon find a topic to research there.

Very friendly and helpful. Opening hours was the only thing... would like to have seen it open earlier.

What a treasure trove for researching family, history of Philadelphia and its founders and so much more. The staff is so welcoming and helpful. An English cousin came to do research on an ancestor from 1890 and they outdid themselves.

If you have ancestors with Pennsylvania roots and are doing research, this is the place to visit. It is a treasure trove of documents, artifacts and genealogy books. Here are a few tips for a successful visit:
1. Check the website before arrival to determine what is in their data base for your relative.
2. Some stacks are open and some closed. You many request three articles at a time from the closed stacks. There are request sheets for these items at the reference desk.
3. Check the website for hours. Currently, Friday is the only day where the society opens at ten am.
4. Be prepared to pay an $8.00 admission charge. You will also need an ID.
5. This is a "pencil only" facility. You can get photocopies (50 cents per page) or take pictures without a flash. Ask at the front desk for a photography identification strip.
6. Show any documents that you are bringing in with you to the front desk staff. Your items will be checked when you exit. It is easy to confuse your items with library materials.
7. Lockers are free. The building temperature is cool. You may want a sweater.
8. There is a kitchenette with a microwave for patrons to use. There is plenty of seating in the bright, airy lunch area.

We had some time to kill and this was the ideal place to do it. What a treat! The museum building is quite lovely, the exhibits top quality. You really get a feel for the history and social/cultural/economic history of Philadelphia in particular. The toy exhibit on the 2nd floor was quite interesting and brought back some fond memories. We enjoyed the photo exhibit too. The only thing I missed was perhaps a few more items on the famous Centennial Exhibition in 1876. This would have rounded out the exhibits.

Looking to break out of the mold for your next fundraiser, corporate gathering or life cycle event? You can't go wrong in this former mansion in the heart of Center City. Built in 1823, HSP's updated construction and dramatic renovations have resulted in easily adaptable, breathtaking spaces. This became clearly evident during the recent event, WHERE THE PAST MEETS THE FUTURE. Society staff, in conjunction with Joe and Jennifer Pertrucci of JPM Catering, introduced guests to a delightful gathering of caterers, event planners, entertainers, even a wine tasting – combined with seating, lighting and floral displays – just so we could envision utilizing HSP's versatility and warmth for our next party.

Imagine sipping wine beside a 19th century grand staircase and munching mouthwatering appetizers (our favorite was chicken and waffles) while walking through rooms filled with 17th, 18th and 19th century printed collections of regional history! Then move on to dine in the magnificent Reading Room, with its inviting huge fireplace, arched windows and massive portraiture. If you like, add a classical soloist, a DJ, or consider engaging Ben Franklin and several members of The Confederation of Union Generals for a bit of friendly banter. My companions and I were enchanted by their wealth of knowledge as they roamed from room to room, remaining in character throughout the evening. We were also intrigued by the concept of bringing your theme to life by creating blow ups from HSP's document collection (over 20 million manuscripts and graphics – ranging from the Civil War to Civil Rights) so your guests can examine them more closely.

If HSP wants to be recognized for more than its research content, I could think of no better way to introduce this "beautiful blend of modern and classic tastes.” In fact, the Philadelphia Orchestra has already been enraptured with the site and will be hosting its own intimate event here shortly.

The friendly staff here has made our many research trips a pleasure, even remembering us from previous visits and making us feel very welcome. A small museum area has rotating exhibits. Lockers are free of charge for researchers and there is even an area to buy a coffee and to eat if you bring your own lunch. Free wifi for patrons is also a plus. Parking garage with valet parking is steps away, or just a short walk from Jefferson Station.
