The condo was fabulous. Great view, clean and comfortable. Cannot beat the location to get around too. It was one of the nicest vacations we have had. Sept was a nice month to go, incredibly quiet - of course it is hurrican season - but fortunately we lucked out and had beautiful weather all 10 dys. Exchanged emails with the manager beforehand and got great directions from airport (we rented a car), was met by a very pleasant manager who ensured we were settled in. Very nice to have free parking right across from the condo building too with an assigned spot.

Rio Mar

The condo is awesome with a fantastic view of the Atlantic. We used two of the three bedrooms, which were big enough to comfortably sleep our family of five.

We had use of the complex's pool, which was 200 yards from the beach. The Rio Mar Resort is bit farther. The larger pool and its activities attracted our kids (15, 13, 10). While you need a membership from the condo owner to  use the Rio Mar pool, we were able to use it but not exchange for fresh towels. Use of the washer and dryer were a definite advantage.

We enjoyed the condo and felt safe there. The parking lot is gated with a guard on duty. Except for explaining how to get the condo key, there wasn't any information about the property or the Rio Grande region.

So here's what we learned:

- the aptly named Amigo grocery store down from the Rio Mar Resort on Route 3 will be your friend. Buy food and alcohol there. Buy lotions, shampoos and other personal products next door at the Walgreens.

- the Rio Mar Resort concierges are helpful. We stayed here 3/26 - 4/2, which was the height of spring break. The Bio Bay tour was sold out for a week. Other tours seemed available, but you may want to book in advance of your stay.

- Rio Mar Resort offers a series of restaurants. The best was The Grille, an Argentine-style restaurant housed in the clubhouse. Lucas, the manager, does a great job of offering the best food we had on the property.

- Richie's, the restaurant at the top of the mountain, is okay. The view is less than inspiring. If you feel you need to see it, order a drink and skip the food.

- La Estacion, just past the entrance to El Conquistator, is spectacular. We had awesome ribs (though careful how you order, they are huge) and a blackened swordfish that was  light and with just the right amount of wang to it. Bring cash as it doesn't take credit cards. We also recommend Don Pepe. A nice break of Mexican food after a string of steak dinners.

- There is an area off of Route 3 near the resort known as the Kiosk, which is essentially a row of restaurants. While they may look sketchy, we had a great meal at the Burger Shack and La Parrilla came highly recommended.

- As a rule, please double check your restaurant checks. Multiple times we found over charges that needed to be corrected.

- We tried zip lining and enjoyed it through Zip Line Rain Forest, which is across the resort from Route 3. It offered enough adventure to satisfy us first timers.

- El Yunque Rain Forest is a cool place to visit. The waterfalls, trails and vistas were fun to see. It was even better on the rainy day we went.

“As good as advertised”

We spent 7 nights at the "villas" at Wyndam's Rio Del Mar Resort. Villa is a bit of a misnomer, as they really are condo apartments. That said, they were as advertised, two well sized bedrooms, one with a king bed, the other with two full sized beds, a common living room/dining area, a small kitchen and two well sized and appointed baths. Ceiling fans in both bedrooms (though the one in our master did not work). Three A/C controls, which worked very well- patios off the living area and the second bedroom. Patio's were a great addition! We stayed on the top floor (5th) and had tremendous views of the pool and onto the beach and the water beyond. Access to pools (there are two) and the beach are as stated, and very convenient. Bed were excellent, sheets a little sub par but satisfactory. We partook of one day of maid service, which got us better sheeting. Towels were ok at best, could be improved (bath towels) Beach towels were fine. Kitchen was adequately stocked with the basics- decent sized refrigerator, all appliances worked well. We ate most breakfasts and lunches in, and cooked one dinner in. We used the conceirge provided grill at the pool for that evening's meal- (cost $35 per use). We made use of the hotel restaurants for a total of 4 meals, two breakfasts, and two dinners- Breakfast buffet was a hit with my kids-kind of expensive- but it beats making waffles in the kitchen! The Italian restaurant was excellent, the Asia one "ok". We had a rental car and an assigned parking space- though there always seemed to be someone else parked in our space-there were plenty of others so no issue with that. We wanted to do several excursions, so renting a car is a must. Shopping for groceries-several options within a five to ten minute trip. We utilized the tennis facility- nice courts, friendly staff, courts are available at night as well. We are not golfers, but the course looked nice and I heard it was reasonably good. Nor did we eat at the golf club, was told the food was ok by others. Pools at the villas were never crowded-several days we seemed to pretty much have them to ourselves. We did walk up to the hotel pool several times, mainly for the kids ot get umbrella drinks, air brush tattoo's and hair braids (no cash, all credit cards). The hotel pool was hopping, crowded and not my cup of tea, but if you want "people" they had them.

The villa was clean, nicely furnished, had internet access-though a bit slow- my kids were able to net connect to their friends (we limited this by being out most days and evenings) but they could get their "fix". Hot water was an issue at times, but I have three teenage daughters-so that can be an issue at home as well! Nice flat screen TV's in all three rooms-also a plus.

We never met Xavier, though his two assistants were more than helpfu and nice. What they could not give us in terms of information the conceirge desk at the hotel backfilled. Between the two we had great resources. We missed getting to do the Bio-lumminecent Bay tour, and the day trip to Culebra-both highly reccommended by other people we met along the way. We felt the day trip to Vieques more than compensated.

We took a day trip to Vieques, highly reccommended! You pick up the ferry in Farajdo (sp?) about 30 minute drive due east. Ferry ride costs roughly $5 a head roundtrip, parking is $5. We booked an afternoon snorkling tour with BlackBeard Sports- went to "Blue Beach"which is stunningly gorgeous! Had lunch prior in Esperanza (tourist area) that was quaint beach side strip of a few bars/restaurants. We ate at Duffy's- which was picked at random- food was good. Basic sandwiches, burgers and cold beer. Publico's (non-private taxis) are the way to get from A to B in Vieques. They are inexpensive and frequent- so no need for a private car or to rent a car, though I suppose you could. I was traveling with a family of 5, and the two trips we took, worked out fine.

Other excursions, horseback riding on a 2,200 acre preserve was great, day trip to Old San Juan, visit the forts, museums and then have cocktails & tapas at Il Convento- excellent food & drink!!!!! Of course, you must see drive and or hike the rain forest-its right accross Rte 3 on the other side of the hotel road entrance-quite spectacular!

All in all, a great family vacation- Driving is a bit treacherous, and that is coming from someone that lives in NY! So, be careful and drive defensively. The poeple of Puerto Rico are lovely and welcoming. We probably were on the more adventurous side of the equation and I think benifited tremendously because of it. Not all our meals out were a hit, but most more than met what we hoped for. Try the kiosks in LoQuillo- just not on a Saturday night-hard to find a place to park.

Net, net, this was exactly what I was lookiing for, part beach vacation, lots of activities, and a little bit of culture, and in the end, I long to go back!

“Beachfront in February with all the amenities of the resort....priceless”

My group wanted a winter get away that was not too far from the USA and not too costly. We chose Puerto Rico because it is a US territory therefore no passports, no customs, basically no hassle. We chose to stay at a resort but at a villa on the property that was rented by owner. The reason we did this is we wanted beachfront access. We also researched the resort and found from other's reviews that eating on the property would be about $100 a day per person! A villa allowed us to prepare our own meals and although it was a little more costly than the hotel room we think it was a better value because we could prepare our own meals. We also had access to all the resorts amenities but our villa was privately owned so the hotel quests did not have access to our area. I am not sure how many units were in the condo but my guess is 100 to 150. During the week we stayed maybe 15 of those units were rented however the hotel looked full. My point is that we had a very private area that included 2 pools and beach with loungers! The beach was cleaned every am by a worker on a tractor picking up seaweed that had washed ashore!! We did not eat on the property but found a great restaurant just left of the resort's entrance called Richie's Cafe. I highly recommend this restaurant for its food, fun and atmosphere. Richie is there almost every nite (we saw him all three times we were there) and he is the perfect example of a restaurant owner - he made us feel so welcome! We also rented a car thru Thrifty because they were the best deal. Total for a week's rental $183. Now it was a Kia Rio but it worked (our next visit we will upgrade the car as the island has lots of pot holes and that car is small with little shock absorption!!) We toured the island on our own (find or bring maps as the tourists maps are very good for driving directions and our GPS wasn't that updated!) and felt very safe. Not knowing Spanish was not much of a barrier. We took two excursions a Bioluminescent Bay tour and Kayak/Snorkle tour. I will write a review on those places seperately but the companies we went through were Island Adventures for the Bioluminescent Bay and Kayak Puerto Rico. Both companies I recommend highly for value, service and safety. In summary, go to Puerto Rico for a great fun in the sun getaway. Stay at the Rio Mar Wyndham Resort (recommend the villas), rent through Thrifty (great service and price- look for their van at airport and they will take you to service counter off airport grounds) and use Island Adventures and Kayak Puerto Rico! Great value - for my husband and myself: airfare, villa, 1/2 car rental, two excursions, our food and spending money we did this trip just under $4000. We went with another couple and shared the villa and cost of car. We live in southeastern US and flew to Miami then to PR. Wasn't crazy about American Airlines - lost luggage no customer service...you know the drill. Visit Puerto Rico!!!

Dear Carol and Doug,
We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our villa and in Puerto Rico. I agree in that the beachfront pools of the Ocean Villas are by far the nicest at the resort. The building actually only has 50 units (they vary in size from 1 bedroom to 3 bedroom villas) and many of them are not available for rent (they are second homes for other people) so the large pools and garden areas for such a small number of villas makes it very appealing!
We look forward in welcoming you in the future,

Xavier Cautino
