“The best house, in the best village if you want to experience French life with your family and friends”

My husband, daughter (aged 9) and I stayed in the beautiful medieval village of Salies de Bearn from April 2012 until February 2013 and had the most perfect French adventure staying in this wonderful holiday house.

THE HOUSE
When you are looking on the internet for a holiday rental property – let’s face it, they all look good and it is a bit of a punt when you are booking from thousands of miles away and you can't do an inspection in advance. Rest assured, this house and this village is even better than it is described on the internet.

Lovingly renovated by the charming owners Mel and Anne, the property is comfortable, has everything you could need including two bathrooms, two sitting rooms and four bedrooms yet retains its medieval appeal with its wonderful winding staircase and beautiful narrow balcony from which you can look out over the village rooftops.

The house is fully stocked with all the usual household needs, including second fridge, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer etc. and all the necessary cutlery, glassware and crockery is on hand too.

The dining table seats 8 and we had many, many fun nights around that table with our visiting friends from home and by the time we left, with our new friends in the village.

Mel provides wood for the pot belly fireplace downstairs and the linen provided is of an excellent quality. There are also guide books, maps, CDs and plenty of English language books.

Even while living the French dream, we still needed internet access and the complimentary Wi-Fi was fast, reliable and better than our service at home!

THE VILLAGE
For a start, the village is picture postcard perfect and from the moment we arrived we felt as if we were on a French film set - cue the local men playing boules, beret wearing, baguette carrying bicyclists, small dogs, outdoor cafes, and winding stone laneways with pretty 400 year old terraced houses, and windows adorned with colourful flower boxes.

The village has everything we could possibly have needed for day to day life from the Carrefour supermarket, to fabulous casual restaurants, bars, (modest) shopping options, and lots and lots of bakeries and pastry shops. We ate out most days, usually for lunch at one of the 15 or so affordable and traditional restaurants and cafes, all within walking distance from the house - important as most lunches involved a sampling of the great local wines including a particularly good rose made in the village.

We experienced all seasons in Salies from a very warm summer with all the fetes and festivals and beach outings, to a wonderful and cosy Christmas, with trips to the snowfields, and evening walks around the village all lit up with fairy lights. This hidden gem of a town offers something for travellers of all interests, groups of friends, couples and even families with children – there is something for everyone.

While we did buy a car, it would not be necessary if your plan was simply to immerse yourself in French village life for a week or two, or a month or so. There is a taxi service in town, which we utilised a few times for airport and railway drop offs and the like, and there is a train station in a neighbouring town from which you can take the TGV to Paris via Bordeaux.

Salies is serviced by two international airports less than an hour's drive away in Pau (Air France) and Biarritz (Ryan Air among others).

THE REGION
Salies de Bearn is a medieval village in the South West of France in the historic Basque region. Less than 100 kms from the Spanish border, Salies de Bearn offers the perfect French experience with a very mild and warm climate which we found very appealing - even in the heart of winter the days were warm enough to enjoy being outside or touring nearby.

For those with a sense of adventure, there is white water rafting nearby and the start of the Camino de Santiago is only 50kms away at St Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyrenees. There is also easy skiing within a 90 mins drive and the best surf beaches in Europe can be found at Hossegor just North of Biarritz, less than an hour's drive away.

The beauty of this region, and Salies de Bearn in particular is that it is seemingly unspoiled by mass market tourism. While only a few hours' drive south of Bordeaux, this region has welcomed tourism, but in a very gentle fashion. If you stay here you will not have to accommodate a daily influx of busloads of noisy tourists following their hapless guide up and down the streets behind her bobbing orange flag.

Having said that, this holiday house is one of the prettiest of all the houses in the Old Town, and during the summer, we often had one or two people stopping to snap pictures of themselves outside the front of the house - our daughter found this hilarious, and offered her best “Bonjours” to the curious passers-by.

As evidenced, I could go on and on about the charms of Salies de Bearn and this property, and would be happy to provide additional information upon request, but put simply, if you are looking for the perfect French adventure in an unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful region of South West France then this is the holiday property for you.

“Wonderful House - Very Good Location”
5 5 étoiles Avis écrit le 24 février 2012 Séjour en août 2011
Google Traduction

My wife and I spent 4 weeks in this house this past August and we were thoroughly pleased with the accommodation and the location. The owners, Mel and Anne lived in the house for 2 years before moving into another house nearby and they apparently left everything behind, because the house is fully equipped, including a large bookcase full of English language books. The house is very comfortable and the arrangement would be ideal for two families sharing because the top floor has another living/dining room, bedroom and full bath. We spent most our down time on the top floor which is very bright, looks out over the neighboring rooftops and has a balcony. We felt as though we were staying in a comfortable home, rather than a vacation rental property.

The house is on a quiet pedestrian street, but has access for loading and unloading at the front door. As noted on the website, parking for one car is provided about 100 meters away. Mel and Anne were always available and helpful – they even provided us with beach towels, a beach umbrella and thermos (flask) at our request. The WiFi is reliable, has a strong signal and is secured by password. The weekly markets in Salies and neighboring towns are enjoyable and a good source of local produce, sausages, strawberries (the Mara des Bois strawberries are a must), French soaps, houseware, clothing, etc. The Salies market on Thursday has a stall with excellent rotisserie chickens and there is a great carry-out pizza shop around the corner. We were in town for the annual espadrille festival that was well attended and great fun, especially the international espadrille “throwing” contest (see photo).

The town of Salies-de-Béarn has everything you could want including a refurbished and operating casino, a health spa and movie theater (French only). There are many shops, including the all-important boulangeries, just a short walk from the house. Most importantly for self-catering, there is a Carrefour supermarket at the edge of town, in addition the closer small grocery stores. The town location provides access by car for day trips to Biarritz to the West (less than an hour by toll highway or longer by country roads through pretty villages and towns) and to the Pyrenees to the South, both well worth multiple visits. For a shorter trip, there is a wonderful riverside outdoor café in Sauveterre-de-Béarn, within 10 km from Salies, with lots of comfortable chairs, including chaise lounges, and tables with umbrellas. Have lunch and then wade or even swim in the river or walk around an island with views of beautiful old buildings and the Pont de la Légende (see photo)
