“Amazing place, just not so private”

It is hard not to be amazed by the views from Norse Point. It is in the quiet, beautiful and less touristy area of Jamaica called Portland. It's about 15 minutes outside of Port Antonio in an area called San San. It is perfectly situated at the beginning of the Blue Lagoon area, in view of San San beach and opposite Monkey Island. It is also a distance from the nearest villa, offering more privacy than the villas built right next to each other by the Blue Lagoon. There are canoes that you can use to go to the Blue Lagoon itself (about 15 minutes) or you can always pay one of the tourist boats that pass the villa. There's lots of good swimming and snorkelling (they have snorkels and masks & flippers) right in front of the villa though I would recommend sea shoes as there are a few sea creatures like urchins that could be rather sore! Diving can be organised by Lady G'diver at the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio.

The villa itself is right on the sea (which is relatively calm thanks to a reef on the far side of Monkey island) and it has a road behind it which it is surprisingly quiet, apart from the occasional horn. It has one bedroom and en suite bathroom (toilet, basin & shower - with hot water) with air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a living room with en suite toilet and a kitchen. Outside there is a veranda spanning the length of the villa, with a covered eating area at one end as well as a deck over the water with tables, chairs and steps into the water. It is beautiful inside with the villa painted white but decorated with many paintings of the area done by the owner and accessories in an array of colours. The whole sea side of the villa has doors which open right up and give a lovely view along with sea sounds and a breeze. There is also a satellite TV, Wifi (though you need to buy a pre-paid card for it) and a landline telephone. Also, there aren't loads of mosquitoes, but there are a few ensuring a few bites! So bring repellant.

It is well stocked and you are looked after very well by Verona. She will cook all meals and do the shopping (you are welcome to join her) and generally look after you while at Norse Point. She is a very warm, cheerful and bubbly person with lots of character, but she also tries to give you privacy that you probably want on your holiday. She comes in the morning for breakfast and stays until she cleans up after dinner at night, although this is also dependent on what you want. Her services are included in the price of the villa, but a tip of approximately $15 a day is recommended.

Verona's sons are taxi drivers, so if you are unwilling to take the local route taxis (cheap, but normally squashed and mildly terrifying!!!) she can sort trips out for you. They do come at a bit of a premium though - the return route taxi to Port Antonio (about 15 minutes away) is about $6 whereas the booked taxi is $25. A single trip to the airport in the booked taxi is $125 which is about normal.

Norse point is a little isolated with local shops and beaches a good walk or at least a drive or boat ride away, but there are lots of gorgeous beaches to explore - San San beach is almost swimmable & easily canoeable, probably about a 10 minute walk and it costs $5 per person. Frenchmans cove, which is absolutely stunning, is a further 10 minutes walk from San San beach and is also $5 per person. There is also a little beach on Monkey Island which you can swim across to. And there is a free beach called Winnifred's beach not too far away, but we were told we would need to get a taxi and it would take about 10 minutes.

Food wise, all your needs should be taken care of by Verona. But if you want some dinner out you can go to San San Tropez for Italian food, Geejam hotel (who only accept bookings if they aren't full), Woodys for hamburgers or jerk in Drapers bay (5 minutes in car) or a variety of places in Port Antonio or Boston Bay (home of Jamaican jerk).

There were, however, a few downsides which made our stay slightly less enjoyable, not all particular to Norse Point. The weather (unfortunately out of anyones control!!) was grey and showery for most of our stay which meant we stayed mostly in the villa. We had wanted to swim lots, but the wind brought choppy waters and made it too cool to swim or snorkel. There are magazines, books & games, but we were disappointed at missing out on all the water & sun time! The second thing was privacy - although it is on the whole quite private, as it is a beautiful area, there are a number of boat trips which pass throughout the day. Occasionally they shout comments or try and get you to join, and often people will wave and take pictures of the house. Then sometimes people from the roadside lean over the wall and try and engage in conversation or take pictures of the area. I just found it a little disconcerting and couldn't relax as much as I would has liked to while outside. And lastly, while we found the Jamaicans friendly and we had no problems crime-wise or of feeling vulnerable, we found that they often had an angle and whilst they'd strike up a general conversation, it would quite often lead to offers of trips, taxi rides or ganja or sometimes flat out requests for money. While they were never aggressive and happily accepted it if you said no, the frequency of the requests sometimes was a little wearing.

So, on the whole we enjoyed our stay at Norse Point - you can't get over the beauty of the place and the views from every room and we would definitely recommend it!
