“Cat Is. fied”

We stayed two weeks at the Boathouse. It's on tiny, barely developed Cat Island which is Southeast of Nassau, This open-air cottage is aptly described on-line. But it's impossible to depict the breezy location, the pristine beach and cabana, the friendly and helpful locals, and the simple and exquisite cusine, This is a beautiful and innocent oasis in the Carribean. Doors are not locked, the keys are in the ingnition, and all is well. Neighbors Leslie and Ned, manage this cabin, and own Pigeon Cay Beach Club resort, next door. They happily shared info, and loaned us canoes, kayaks, and fishing gear. Bikes are provided and a car is not necessary. We rented a Jeep from Leslie on several occasions, to explore the 40 miles of paved road linking other resorts, restaurants, and grocers. Pigeon Cay also features Chef Delcina, who prepares conch, crays, and other Bahamian delicacies for evening meals. Their beachfront "Honor Bar" Cabana is always open for a cool adult beverage.
We cooked many delicious meals ourselves, with plentiful availability of the day's fresh catch, and regular visits from the veggie man van. The Boathouse kitchen was well-equipted. Horizontal refreshment was provided by a huge hammock, a Sleep Number bed, and ample lounges and deck chairs. Big ceiling fans were numerous, and air conditioning, while provided, was never necessary. This is a comfy nest, an island outpost with all the quiet, uncomplicated, private seaside amenities any experienced traveler could hope for.
The USA owners of the Boathouse called us to ensure satisfaction while we were in residence. Then they followed up with a sincere, comprehensive checklist once we returned to the cold, cruel, Cincinnati winter. That alone rates an A+++

“Imagine the most secluded, beach-living hideaway you can think of.... that's the Boathouse.”

Everything you see in the pictures is accurate. All the facilities are exactly as described. Be aware that 50% of the living is outdoors and you need to be comfortable with all that entails (sand, breeze/wind, bugs around dusk, etc...) The December weather in the Bahamas was less than ideal. Lots of cloudy days and rain. Mild temperatures. If we went back we'd investigate a hotter season. Be prepared for minimal food resources. Fruits and vegetables came round once in the week. Staples were scarce, and the stores keep island hours. Fresh seafood is possible, but you need to get on the phone and make arrangements with a local; it won't be in a cold case at the store. We took in other meats, frozen, and a suitcase full of food staples (pasta, rice, sauces, dressings) You will definitely need a vehicle during your stay, nothing in walking distance besides a church and the beach. Also, check with locals for sites to see. There are no typical tourist attractions. Cat Island is very traditional and a purely island experience. Souvenirs would be a woven grass item (purse, hat, mat) made by locals and some beautiful shells. You aren't going to find t-shirts or postcards. Most restaurants keep the same island time as the stores, and you have to call ahead to let them know you want to come in. There is no night life for island guests.

At time we were at the house, there weren't bikes or kayaks available. I understand the owner was arranging to have some put in place. All in all, it was a great value and a great stress reliever. Feet up on the deck, a cold Kalik and soft music... pretty much all hours of the day! My recommendation below is definitely for guests who aren't in need of luxurious ammenities or a bustling vacation pace. Definitely go if you are a fan of sun, surf and great beach views.

We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed our glorious beach, the decks, sun, surf and views. As you mentioned, Cat Island is still that hidden gem in the islands that has not been discovered by hotel chains, franchises, casinos, and jet skis.....a true and pure island experience. There are a number of markets on the island (Orange Creek, New Bight, Smith's Bay) that carry pretty much all the staples that you might need; available meat however is typically frozen. Fresh lobster, conch, grouper, red snapper, Mahi Mahi, are available in season from a number of the local fisherman including Tito who has his market a mile and a half from the Boathouse. Fresh vegetables are available at the markets listed above, and from Danny in Arthur's Town and the Reverand (he delivers). All the phone numbers and contact details are listed in the guest book above the IPOD docking station in the LR. I am sorry that you had difficulty locating the bikes and kayaks; there are two brand new bicycles in our garage, and the canoe is tied up behind the Boathouse at the waters edge. There are also two kayaks (a single and a tandem) stored at PCBC. Use of the bikes, canoe and kayaks are free to our guests. See additional details, photos and 33 reviews at
Thank you for spending your holidays at the Boathouse, and please come back again soon.
