This is the third time I have been lucky enough to stay at Plas Hen. We go there with friends, sometimes as a lads weekend, and sometimes with partners. The adventure starts as you crest the high pass on the A470 . At the top there is a parking space, and you can get out, underneath the Aran mountains, and look down three miles below and see the country estate where the house is situated.
You turn off down a quiet, wide farm lane, and pull up underneath this wonderful old mansion, that used to be the family home of the owners of the estate. After exploring the six or seven rooms, you will no doubt look out of the windows, across the beech hedges containing the formal garden, towards the dip in the country, in which the famous Torrent drops down into the Barmouth estuary at Dolgellau.
You will light a fire: perhaps in the dining room if you are staying in for dinner for the first night, or more likely, light a fire in the sitting room, ready for you after a walk down the...
