We visited Port Renfrew because we were looking for a West Coast Vancouver Island alternative to the Tofino Area. And we found it! Port Renfrew is a small, funky little place with a west coast vibe. The beaches are wild, rugged, windswept and incredibly beautiful. The road from Cowichan Lake is less arduous than the road to Tofino, but no less beautiful. It is also much shorter! There are many stops you can make on the way, such as Cowichan River, the San Juan River, the giant Harris Creek fir, and Lizard and Fairy Lakes. These are beautiful warm sunny spots.
There is plenty to do in Port Renfrew. You can visit Avatar Grove, Botany Bay, Botanical Beach, China Beach or Sombrio Beach. Some beaches are sandy, others like Botany Bay and Botanical Beach are rugged, rocky and offer great tide pools. Beware there are no garbage cans in the beach parks. You have to pack your garbage out.
