wine the day away!
août 2021 • En couple
My husband and I had the best day with Carl. Carl picked us up promptly at our hotel. He went the extra mile and had flowers and champagne for me because it was a birthday! On the way to our first winery he gave a great history lesson of the area and wineries. we felt super comfortable with Carl he really makes you feel like an old friend. the wine was great the views are amazing. we loved the short boat ride. just an all around well planned out tour!

I extend my stay in Frankfurt only for this amazing trip
I extended my stay in Frankfurt for one more day after i read the reviews of Carl trip, and its really really worth it.
I have no enough words to explain that tour, simply CARL is a 7 stars tour guide.
we started the journey with Champaign opening, had an amazing conversation along the trip he knows everything about the wine and growing it, we visited the wineries as planned tried the wines and listened to the stories, toke me to sightseeing also, and we had traditional lunch in front of the Reine.
Finally he dropped me back to the hotel and gifted me a bottle of wine how nice was that.

Fun Day in the Rheingau
mars 2020
I only had two days for leisure as I was in town for business later in the week and looking for something fun to do before then. This was easily the highlight of my trip. Carl is the guide and he's great. He reached out to me one week before the tour to get an understanding of what types of grapes I liked and understand my level of wine knowledge. Based upon the feedback from me and his other guests, he then designed the trip.
The tour started off with some sparkling Riesling and a 20+ minute drive out to the Rheingau. During that time he shared with us the history of the region and his backstory. From there we were off to our first vineyard which focused on the traditional Rieslings. After that we went to a second vineyard which also had Rieslings along with some other varietals and blends. After a few hours of wine tasting, we needed some food and had a lovely lunch at a spot that overlooked the Rhine. Finally we capped the day with a third vineyard an enjoyable ride home.
I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone and would take another tour with Carl. Great time, great wine.

Great day, 100% recommend this!
janv. 2020 • Entre amis
Carl was right of time picking us up for our personal tour; we visited three unique wineries and also had an excellent lunch. He was so knowledgeable, personable, and just all around lovely. Our tastings were tailored and absolutely perfect. Lunch was outstanding. I can not recommend this enough, you really need to do this!

Amazing Day
janv. 2020 • Entre amis
Carl did an incredible job picking amazing small wineries for us and was a great host. My friends and I all had a wonderful day, drank amazing wine, and discovered how much we’ve been missing out on German wines. Could not recommend a tour with Carl enough!

Awesome experience, friendly and knowledgeable guide
First off I will say a day spent with Carl will not be a day wasted. He is awesome and by the end of the day my wife and I felt like lifelong friends. Great tour. Carl has done his homework and knows lots of locals that offer a very personal experience. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended and If my wife and I ever go back, we will book the tour just to see Carl.

Wonderful wine tour, found some excellent Reds too !
mai 2019
We took the tour in May and there were 4 of us, my wife and a couple from Hong Kong. The guide Carl was really on top of everything with a lot of energy, really made it a wonderful experience. We were picked up and dropped off at our hotels. This area is known for white wines which is what we expected, but I must admit I prefer red wines given a choice. I enjoyed the white wines we sampled which may have expanded my palate. And Carl made sure we found some red wines from the area which are based on the Pinot Noir grape which was new to us, Spatburgunders are a great red from Germany! The scenery was great and Carl accommodated our desire to stop and get some photos of the country side.

Leider weit unter den Erwartungen / Way beyond expectations
sept. 2019
(English Version below)

-- ENGLISH VERSION --
I booked this trip as a gift for my parents and was very excited about the many positive reviews.
After the descriptions of the trip I find the relation between price and value very inappropriate.

Four wineries were visited and wine tastings were held. Depending on the winery, some explanations were given by the employees of the winery and some were not. These visits and tastings can usually be done free of charge as they are basically a "sales activity" of the wineries.

Regarding the price of the tour, my expectation would have been that the guide of the tour would contribute explanations/information and not limit himself to his role as chauffeur.
Even the transport was inacceptable, as it was reported that the driver took part in the wine tastings in full. I consider it NO-GO that the driver drinks alcohol during the tour.

Unfortunately, we hadn't noticed that the description shows that the tour is in English only. Therefore we have to state that the tour is obviously not suitable for non-English speaking participants.

Contrary to the information of the excursion, no ferry ticket was needed (because there was no ferry trip) and also no "Rhine Valley entrance" (because the Rhine Valley is a freely accessible region) was needed.

As conclusion I can only state that this price is pure rip-off to only be driven around for the service.

Dear Patrick Thank you for the feedback even though it deeply concerns me that the experience that your parents had on tour with me was not as expected. I understand that everyone has a different perception of what a wine tour should be and an experience is personal. And my sincere apologies if your parents did not feel the tour was reflective of the value you had paid for them. However, I feel that maybe some of the day and experience may have literally got lost in translation which was a topic I did bring up with you before hand to check if this would still be ok. I did set expectations around language being in English and of course where possible I would do my best to translate with my basic German. I did always ask the representative at each winery if they can give an explanation in German. In most cases the German explanations outweighed the English so I was doing more translation for American guests who by the way had a great time. Just to clarify about the wineries. We visited 4 boutique -midsized - independent VDP winemakers which are part of a top 200 quality wine makers in Germany. At 2 of the wineries we met the owners of the wineries that introduced their winery and told something about the wines. At the other 2 wineries I feel we got an in-depth explanation and guidance through the wines by experienced, lovey staff who have a close relationship with the owners. Taking advantage of the September timing - the first appointment was a 2018 Grand Cru vintage release where special friends and members of the winery were invited to come try new GG releases in a unique open tasting where you can guide your self through the wine selection. I have taken guests to this uniquely German style of tasting before with much enjoyment. At each of the wineries I had made appointments and due to the special relationship I have with each winery we received an in-depth overview of the wines, tasting sometimes more than 10 wines and tasting wines that were not even on the list from older special vintages dating back to 1988. At the last winery they stayed open for an extra 45 mins for us. All wineries we visited are wines I personally also buy wine from as they offer outstanding price quality and offer a more personal service experience… I.e. not large brand name cellar doors. In some ways I disagree that the wineries were merely performing a sales activity - well yes on one side they want to sell wine - but actually one of the reasons I choose to visit the wineries I do is because I like that they have a more casual approach to not just selling you wine and more talking to you as a guest and explaining the wine when you are interested. Many previous guests I have had find this very welcoming compared to other wine regions in the world where you feel pressured to buy after 2 sips. I have noted your comment on the Rhein valley being free to enter, this was a mistake I made in the limited way Trip Advisor allows you to sep up your profile. Apologies if this was misleading. In regards to not taking the ferry…. 90% of the time I do take the car ferry across the Rhein as a nice way to go from the Rheingau to the Rheinhessen wine region. And sure the 7 minute ferry ride does offer some nice views from the water when the weather is clear. However, due to being behind the time, the rainy weather and decision to go to a different - better suited Rheinhessen winery based on the wine preference of the group I decided to go a quicker, more direct way on the Autobahn. The last winery must have been a good choice as all guests even your parents seemed to like that winery the most - with many cases being bought. To clarify - beyond my role as a chauffeur I did also try to explain a lot about the regions, specific special terroir and purpose of selecting each winery throughout the day. In between I offered my knowledge and experienced insights as a consumer of wines and for that reason… Yes I do taste some of the wines with guests as an exercises to help explain the wines. There is a difference between tasting and drinking … that’s why they have spittoons at the winery. I would never want to jeopardise the safety of my guests. The spittoon was always close by. Again my sincere apologies to you and your parents if this was not the wine tour they had in mind. Let me know their address and I will send them a bottle of wine to make up for it. Your sincerely, Carl

Full wine treatment!
août 2019 • Entre amis
What a fantastic and memorable day with friends trying new wines!

What I liked about planning this tour was that it's flexible. Carl, our guide, asked a lot of questions up front to gauge what our interests were and made recommendations from there. We weren't on a strict schedule and were free to take our time and explore the wineries we visited. We even swung by a wine festival that was happening in the area!

Carl provided first-class service from beginning to end. We were picked up in his lovely SUV, which was packed with water, fresh pretzels and pastries, and to my surprise - a bottle of sparkling wine. We sipped bubbles as Carl gave us the plan for the day and some background about German wines. Carl fielded all my questions (and I ask a lot). He's a fountain of wine knowledge!

The places that we visited were all unique. It was great to see and taste the variety. We toured cellars from the high tech and chic to the older, more traditional cellars. We met owners and winemakers, and tried wines that varied from the affordable to the highest end.

This was a complete, full-day experience and well worth the price. This isn't a large group tour where you're herded around, but more like a trip with your German friend who happens to know all about wine (and offered to drive)!
