The content of the museum is the various artifacts of the tribes of Kenya, such as milk holder, spears, grain storing container, etc but the sad part is that these things are kept in a very dismal condition.
the importance of these things will be know once the tribes have become extinct and that these things will not be available.

The desert museum is an interesting visit though it doesn't offer a lot more beyond the household artefacts of the neighboring tribes - though these are quite interesting to see and learn about. It's in a unique location though with a beautiful view of Lake Turkana. Once you are in Loiyangalani it makes sense to visit it given that its free of charge to get in.

I titled the review as such, as the artifacts in the museum are still actively being worn and utilized by these remote locals still today. But the descriptions and the displays make for a very interesting visit. The curator was very informative and a lovely lady.

Even if visiting museums isn’t your favourite activity you should see the Desert Museum, Loiyangolani which was opened in 2008. It has the fantastic colours of Lake Turkana as a background.
In the Museum you will get some information about heritage of the tribes that live near the Lake, namely Rendille, Turkana, Samburu, Pokot, Watta, Gabbra, Dassanach and very important El Molo tribe. Our guide is a Rendille and he is married to a Turkana and he speaks also Samburu and more. That’s why I felt I had to learn, at least, the names of the tribes.
Marti Rock
In the afternoon our guide took us to see Marti Rock which is one of the three main rock sites with engravings about 5000 years old. They depict animals and ancient symbols.

We just stopped by as it was on our way and we got pleasantly surprised! The museum is very informative about the different tribes living in the North of Kenya, unveiling facts about their traditions, cultures, daily lives and habits. It exposes crafts belonging to tge different tribes and also shows the different plants and animals of the North.
We were charged 150 KES (1,50 USD) per person.
Worth a visit!

The museum is remote, and simple, a bit expensive (500sh) But to promote its existence it is worth the visit. You will read about the tribes around, insects, birds, see examples of cutlery, jewellery etc.

I visited in September 2015, I asked when they last had a visitor and the reply was 'June'!! However the guide was an anthropologist and had worked at the digs in the North of the Lake.

The desert museum is not far out of the town of Loiyangalani. It is surprisingly beautifully built and set up. There is some really interesting information inside regarding the history of people, rock art and the topography/plants in the region. The exhibits are getting a bit old though and some of the beautiful photographs need to be put back in place.
You can walk down to the lake-side from the museum and it has truly beautiful views for sundowners. It is only a 10 minute drive from the town center and is worth going to - even if only because there are limited excursion opportunities, so this should be one of them!. Some cottages/bandas have just been built at the Museum site overlooking the lake - not sure if they are for the public to rent, or just for National Museum staff.

The drive to this place is an experience by itself. If driving all the way from Nairobi, even better.
The Desert Museum is one very lovely place to visit. First the way its built is a bonus to the integration of architecture and nature. The open plan method also makes it quite unique to walk around. Its location by the Jade is sea was very well thought out and cool. The stuff inside the museum is generally what you find in most Kenyan museums but the difference now is in the local information. There is quite some interesting stuff about the locality, the migrating birds and other folklore of this place. When you visit this region, do visit this museum and enjoy yourself.
