It is about a 10-minute walk from Ashikaga Station on the JR Ryomo Line. It is the oldest school in Japan. It is one of the three most famous Ashikaga spots along with Banna-ji and Ashikaga Flower Park. I am surprised that the highest school in the east was here in Ashikaga.

The historic Ashikaga School is located in the center of Ashikaga City, a few hundred meters northwest of Ashikaga Station.
Ashikaga School is known as the oldest school in Japan. There are various theories about its foundation, including the Nara period, the Heian period, and the Kamakura period, but it was surprising that there were people here who tried to create a place for learning in those times.
There were a number of old and splendid gates and a number of buildings left on the property.

We stayed at Route Inn Ashikaga and conveniently walked to this school within 5 minutes. It was founded during the late 12th century by the samurai lord Ashikaga Yoshikane, the Ashikaga School is Japan’s oldest academic institution.
The curriculum included Confucianism, I Ching, Chinese medicine, and strategics.
Unlike other schools of that era, the Ashikaga School did not teach Buddhist studies, as it believed that Buddhism should be learned in the temples and not in school. Remarkably, tuition was free.
In 1921, the former Ashikaga School received National Historic Site designation.
Restoration efforts, completed in 1990, returned the school building and garden to their Edo period glory.
Recommended a visit here if staying at Ashikaga.

I went to see the red plum blossoms because I heard they were blooming. So I went outside the paid area to the front of the school gate. The red plum blossoms were blooming, but there were only a few white plum blossoms here and there. I think it would have been better to go about a week later. I crossed the footbridge from the Taiheikikan sightseeing parking lot, and I thought it would be nice to have a bird's-eye view from the footbridge.

和風な建造物と庭園と樹木が楽しめます
建造物は学舎なので、古刹とはちがった味わいがあります
神仏というより生活感が感じられる造りというのですかね
庭園や建物も良いのですが、
学校らしらのあり、字降松や宥座之器が面白かったかな。

日本最古の学校で敷地内に学問の神様が祀られた神社があります。娘の合格祈願に行ってきました。神社だけであれば無料です。

足利市にある日本最古の学校。参観料を支払うと大きな入学証が渡されます。起源には諸説あり不明な点が多い様ですが、小野篁説もあり興味深いところです。建物は再建ですが、南北の庭園。国宝の書籍等があり歴史の深さを感じます。学校門は有名であり趣もあります。孔子廟の孔子像もはっきり拝見できます。大正時代に建てられた遺跡図書館にも資料が展示されているので見る価値があります。南庭園に面した方丈に吹き込む風が気持ち良かったです。近くに無料駐車場が完備されています。

日本最古の学校です。しかし驚いたのはその起源が諸説あって実際は分かっていないということです。しかも諸説の間に数百年のギャップがあります。
見どころは色々ありました。孔子像のある孔子殿、庭が見渡せる方丈などが印象的でした。また入場券の代わりとなる「足利学校入学証」はしおりに良いと思います。

恥ずかしながら初めて足利に日本最古の学校があった事を知りました。また駐車場は道路を挟んで反対側で歩いて3分ほどの距離で近く無料でした。駐車場にはお土産も売ってます。最古とあってとても厳かで威厳のある佇まいで、茅葺き屋根の造りや蔵などもありとても落ち着いた良い環境だと思いました。古の生徒たちも勉学に勤しめた事でしょう。

平日で雨のこともあり、見学者はまばら。「足利学校入学証」を購入し、構内案内ビデオを鑑賞。３つの門をくぐり（一つ目は入口）、孔子の像、徳川家の位牌？、庭、学校内を見学できます。豊臣秀次により、京へ強奪された書物を豊臣政権崩壊後、徳川家康により足利へもどされ、日本最古の学校として、徳川家に保護され、現代に至っています。
