They have improved the museum and we had a guided tour in English. They have uncovered more of the ruins. It was nice to tour this site.

We have visited several archeological sites in Mexico. We learned much at the museum and from our visit to the temple zone. I am now determined to learn much more of the culture of this period and the ancient Olmecs. I also have been inspired to learn more of the people now living in the area.

Good to see. They have built recreations over the sites. Farmers will not give the land to govt. They have built a cement pyramid and rock ball court. Museum is still all in Spanish. Do your homework before you go. The jungle patch to see the ruins all enhance. No jungle. No little store across the street to sit and relax with a soda. went to Barra de Potois for lunch!

We like to plan our own day trips, and La Chole is a great one from Zihuatanejo.
The other reviewers are spot on with their enthusiastic reviews.
We took the Petatlan Combi bus from Zihuatanejo and got off just past Palos Blancos. Tell the driver where you are going and he'll make the stop. 30 pesos.
A truck taxi, like from Los Achotes to Barra de Potosi, took us 3 k to the Museum. 15 pesos.
There are local, English-speaking guides there to interpret the exhibits. Helpful, as the interpretation panels are in Spanish. 20 peso "donation" for the Museum.
The guide will then take you to the excavation sites. Suggested "tip": 2-300 pesos.
Truck taxi or local taxi back to Hwy 200, then flag the Zihua Combi to return to Zihuatanejo.
It was Thursday on our trip, so we stopped in Coacoyul on he way back for Pozole!

The uncovering of the ancient city and it’s artifacts is underway but what they have uncovered is truly amazing. There’s a small museum there with a very informative guide. Worth the trip to see this historic site.

This is not a very well known archaeology site. A friend of mine who lives near by took us here.

Very very interesting. Our guide, Irvin, who spoke English. and gave us a very detailed tour. Apparently it was his father who discovered a ring farming the land, and one thing led to another and the started digging the site.

We were able to meet, and visit the man who discovered the ruins, at his home. A very nice ma. He doesn't speak English so Irvin had to translate.

We were given a tour of the local church and given a loofah right off the loofah tree. Can't get more organic than that.

Highly recommended.

I should mention that we have been to several of the Mayan sites in the Yucatan, just to be transparent. This site is only slightly developed and therefore does not really compare in size and scope. That said I would strongly urge anyone who is interested in ancient cultures to take in this small museum, pyramid, and ball court. The Site was wiped out by a large tsunami hundreds of years ago.
We did this trip on our own from Zihua, using a combination of buses , a truck, and taxis. An adventure and fun ! There are arranged tours from Ixtapa.
I would highly recommend the church and town plaza in Petatlan as well. Not much English spoken but plenty of nice, helpful, wonderful people. We had lunch there, very good and very inexpensive. They made the huaraches and sopes from scratch, delicious, and lunch for two was 5 bucks, with two fresh squeezed OJs.
The church is also worth viewing and the town is known for its gold vendors surrounding the area close to the church and central market/town plaza .
Go early if you don't like the heat!

They have done a marvelous job of excavating La Cholesterols, an ancient indigenous temple site with a ball court. Remember that winners were killed after the game. The site was astronomically-designed to correspond with the solstices and equinoxes. The museum is excellent and inexpensive.
It's highly recommended to hire a local guide. José is wonderful and bilingual. His uncle found most of the original artifacts. There is a cute little town nearby that has refreshments available.

My deceased husband and daughter went to LaChole every Sunday for 15 years plus. They got to know the family there. Amazing memories! I go to see the enormous progress and realize the incredible archeological sites as a tribute to my family. It's definitely worth the drive!
