① Super windy. Let's go in heavy clothes.
② No place to keep out the rain
③2.6km from Mokoi Station, it is a long ascent slope even from the nearest bus stop, so a taxi is recommended for the outward journey
④ You can go 24 hours. There is a toilet.
⑤ There are no ticket machines at Mokoi Station! 笑
⑥ Far from Toccariscio Observatory!
【Objective】
Lighthouse card, Muroran sightseeing
【Move】
Take a taxi (10 minutes) from Bokoi Station on the JR Muroran Main Line. There are so few buses...
【Tips】
If you look at Itanki Beach, you will be able to enjoy the strange rocks and terrain more.

If you want to see Toccarisho - Kin Byobu - Cape Chikiu, we recommend taking a taxi or driving. It's a great view of the cliffs, so it's all up and down roads.
The sea north at the end of October was cold, but the view never bores the north wind.

I stopped by with my family on the last day of sightseeing in Hokkaido. If it had been sunny, I would have been able to see the direction of Hakodate, but unfortunately it was cloudy. Still, the view overlooking the lighthouse from above is quite impressive.

In southwestern Hokkaido lies the port city of Muroran with its voted Muroran Hakkei (translated as “eight sights of Muroran”) that comprises (1) Tokkarisho scenic area (2) Kinbyobu (gold screen) and Ginbyobu (silver screen) cliffs (3) Cape Chikyu (4) view from Mount Sokuryo (Sokuryozan) lookout observatory (5) Masuichi Beach outer sea view (6) Daikokujima (Daikoku Island) (7) Cape Etomo (8) Muroran Harbour night view.
As part of my family’s 10-day Hokkaido self-drive itinerary, we did three of the eight sights of Muroran: Tokkarisho scenic area, Kinbyobu and Ginbyobu cliffs and Cape Chikyu. We started with Tokkarisho scenic area in and ended with Cape Chikyu (地球岬). The Japanese name for Cape Chikyu is “Chikyu Misaki” which translates to “Cape Earth”. Interestingly, “Chikyu” comes from the indigenous Ainu language name of “poro cikep” meaning “a large steep cliff” with the word “poro” eventually dropped and “cikep” later distorted to “cikew”.
Cape Chikyu is located on the northern part of the opening into Uchiura Bay. On either side of Cape Chikyu are about 14 kilometers of towering precipitous steep cliffs over 100 meters high that were created by volcanic activity million years ago.
Getting here: We drove 700 metres from Kinbyobu Cliff Lookout Point to Cape Chikyu carpark via Apple Maps and Google Maps on the Apple Car Play in our rental car. The free parking car park has about 42 car park lots (and 6 bus parking lots so it means that Cape Chikyu is a popular tourist attraction). When we arrived here on a Saturday late afternoon close to 4pm, the car park was almost full. Alternatively, you could drive about 10 minutes for 2.6 km or walk 35 minutes uphill on foot from JR Bokoi Station to here or drive about 35 minutes for 13.5 km from Muroran Interchange to here. From JR Muroran Station, you could also take the Donan Bus bound for Chikyukisaki Danchi (13 minutes), get off at the last stop, then walk 20 minutes. Next to the car park are the lavatories, a few shops selling soft-serve ice cream and snacks and a metal globe.
The Cape attraction: Cape Chikyu opens 24 hours and similar to most Hokkaido attractions, has no entrance fee. Upon alighting from our car, we walked up a gentle slope pathway for about 2 minutes and soon reached the top where we saw over the barrier the view of the blue sky, (North) Pacific Ocean and the white Cape Chikyu lighthouse – this is not the best view yet, wait till you go up to the Cape Chikyu Observation Deck. Incidentally along the barrier there is a photo “stand” aptly named “Murostagram” that you could take a photo of these three entities through an opening and post it on Instagram. In the Murostagram “stand”, there appears to be a translated narrative (could be a poem) about Cape Chikyu (Cape Globe) entitled “Endless Color of Our Planet” where it describes the dolphins and whales coming here from Shimokita Peninsula, dazzling white octagonal turret, walking trails along streams and flowers and ends with “Cape Globe, such an infinite sight; Cape Globe, endless colour of our planet”
After photos at the Murostagram, it was time to go up to the Cape Chikyu Observation Deck. We turned right and walked several steps up to the Cape Chikyu Observation Deck that is about 147 meters above sea level. The Observation Deck has a huge lower level which has stairs leading up to a smaller upper level.
We liked the lower level deck because
(1) we got a much more expansive and magnificent birds-eye panorama of the blue sky, (North) Pacific Ocean, Cape Chikyu lighthouse and the distant mountain range of the Kameda Peninsula,
(2) we saw the horizon that separates the Pacific Ocean and the sky is not indefinitely straight but curved – so the Earth is round and not flat,
(3) we saw below us the octagonal lighthouse – the “symbol” of Cape Chikyu – standing prominently on a cliff at about 130 metres in all its painted white glory that contrast so stunningly against the dark blue ocean. The built-in-1920 Lighthouse opens on Marine Day or Ocean Day or Sea Day (the third Monday in July),
(4) we saw the two active stratovolcanoes along the distant Kameda Peninula mountain range: 1131-metre Komagadake (Mount Komaga) and 618-metre E-san (Mount E).
We then walked up to the upper level of the Observatory Deck. We enjoyed the 360 degrees panoramic view – in addition to the Pacific Ocean, Lighthouse, Kameda Peninsula, we also saw the Cape Chikyu car park, southern Muroran, Muroran Port, wind farm, Oinaoshi Fishing Harbour and part of the 14 kilometres long rugged coastline around Cape Chikyu that has steep cliffs. However, the larger lower level partially obstructed the view of the Lighthouse and a hill blocks the Hakucho Bridge. Nevertheless, there is the Bell of Happiness in which the locals believe will bring you happiness and prosperity when you ring it. When some visitors rang the Bell, it just simply magnified the happiness and exciting atmosphere.
While we enjoyed happiness and peace at being here at Cape Chikyu (but we did not ring the Bell) in seeing the marvelous scenery, I could not help feeling that I was standing in one little place in the whole Earth or like they say, one insignificant speck in the universe – it so humbling!
On New Year's Day, Cape Chikyu is packed with visitors who come to see the first sunrise. It is also an important nesting site for rare peregrine falcons. Dolphins and whales are sighted here usually from June to August.
Interestingly, most visitors would miss next to the metal globe an information board “北海道の自然100選” or “Hokkaido Natural Beauty 100” that commemorates the number one ranking of Cape Chikyu (published by the Asahi Shimbun in 1985). I could not find the list but it goes without saying that Cape Chikyu is “must visit” when you are in Hokkaido. Do check the weather before you come here because you will not see the marvelous scenic landscape in heavy rain or fog. To have an all-round appreciation of the marvelous natural beauty of Cape Chikyu (and the remaining six of the “eight sights of Muroran” minus Muroran Harbor), I would recommend a cruise along the 14-kilometre coastline from April to November.

Cape in Muroran City. Its official name is "Cape Chikiu". It has a precipice of 100 meters, and is said to have been formed from the Ainu word "chikepu" (cliffs), from Chikepu to Chikiu to Earth. If the weather is clear, you can see the round horizon and Shimokita Peninsula, but unfortunately the weather was bad when I visited. I went up to the observation deck, but I couldn't even see the sea level, even though it was white.

I went there for the first time in over 30 years. It was the end of December (yesterday, the 21st). It takes quite a while to get to the cape from the highway, so I recommend planning your trip with plenty of time.
There was no one there, so I enjoyed the great outdoors. For a long time, I believed that the name was given because you can see the gently elliptical horizon, which makes you realize the roundness of the earth. I learned that the name originated in the Ainu language, from "Boro Chikeppu" (the parent cliff) to "Chikeue" → "Chikiu". Like many capes in Hokkaido, it is a spot with a magnificent sea and a great view.

This is a place that always comes up when you search for Muroran.
I stopped by without high expectations, but the weather was good and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
It was a bit foggy though, so I couldn't see the opposite shore, but I'm glad I went because it was so refreshing.

From Bokai train station, we were fortunate enough to get a taxi to the lighthouse. It took about 10 minutes to reach the lighthouse and a whole 10 minutes to explore it. There's only a lookout and a bell for visitors. You can't go to the lighthouse or anywhere else. It then took us 45 minutes to walk back to the train station.

Hi all, we will be arriving Muroran at the cruise terminal and we will be there for 6 hrs. Is there public transportation from the cruise terminal to this spot and if so, how much does it cost?
