We were on a two-day trip of Ranganathittu bird sanctuary and Mysore. On the return journey, we decided to go to Talakadu (about 50km from Mysore), before returning to Bangalore.
I had high expectations of architectural and sculpturing grandeur at these temples (there are 6 temples) and was sorely disappointed. Vaidyanathershwara temple and Keerthi Narayana temples are better than the other temples here. If you have seen Belur, Halebeedu, Hampi & Somnathpur temples, you wouldn’t want to bother with Talakadu temples.

Although not part of the panchalingas this is for me, the best spot in Talacaud. It is adjacent to the Vaidyanatheshwara temple itself and reachable from the main road. This Vishnu temple also offers worship and decorum is expected to be maintained. Architecture wise this is very pleasing with a good landscape lined with trees. This temple is also sort of in a pit and offers great views from the walkway between Paataleshwara Temple and Maruleshwara Temple.

Superb place to visit if you are a history and travel buff who wants to explore less visited places.

The Kirtinarayana temple at Talakadu built in 1117 A.D. Recently restored it to it's full glory by Archaelogical Survey of India after excavation in sand dunes in Talakad. Amazing place for folklore, history buffs and archaeology.

Keerthi narayanana temple is one of the Shiva Panchalinga temples at Talakadu. It was submerged with sand dunes and was excavated by ASI and restored.
Worth a visit and can be clubbed with Chennakesava temple at Somnathpura.

Most of the temples at Talakadu are dedicated to Lord Shiva, but this temple is dedicated to a form of Lord Vishnu. Going by the information displayed at the site, the temple is believed to be built in the first half of 12th Century. The temple is believed to have a unique features, which though are not visible today, there is an effort by ASI to restore the same.
The temple is located in what appears to be a huge pit excavated in the sand. If the visitors follow the covered path, this temple comes last in the order of visit. However, detour can be made mid way.
The temple appears very impressive even in the present state of partial restoration.

On the way to Maruleshwara temple from Pathaleshwara temple, one can get down the sand dunes to visit Kirthinarayan temple or from the front side near the parking area. Kirthinarayan temple is fully excavated and restored by ASI. The artistic prakarams and pillars follow Hoysala architecture. Looks like the temple collapsed and has been restored by ASI.

A good temple of Lord Vishnu. The entrance to this temple is beautiful. One can directly go here or one can complete Panchalinga Darshan and go here. From Panchalinga covered pathway, the view of this temple is amazing.

The temple is dedicated to Kirthi Narayanan, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The temple is an ancient temple about 800 years old. After completing Panchalinga temples path of 3 km, one can see the temple at end of your sacred path. However one wishes to avoid Panchalinga Path, he can come direct here by pucca road. You have a nice view of this temple at a height from Panchalinga Path. The temple is under archaeology Survey of India. The best place of Talakad, not to miss.

This is in the surrounding of Talakadu Panchalinga temples. Basically if you start your trip visiting Vaidyanatheshwara temple, then you will end the round with Keerthinarayana temple. This hosts Venkateshwara avatara of Vishnu.
This is the only temple which hosts Vishnu as main diety, in Talakadu, as it was built by Hoysala dynasty. Others were by Ganga-Chola dynasty for whom the primary worship was Lord Shiva
Main temple was reconstructed/restored using the materials found during excavation. But the mahadwara remains intact.
Strongly suggest to take the guide service to get to know about the place rather than just roaming. Spending 200INR is fine to get to know about the place. Visited in March 2017
If you are going by a bike and need a decent trip you can follow the below
Bangalore --> Shivanasamudra --> Talakadu --> Cauvery river --> Somanathapura --> back to bangalore (will sumup to 340km)

It was built in the year 1117 AD by the king Vishnuvardhana being one of the panchanarayana shrines. The presiding deity in the temple is the Lord Keerthi Narayana. The nine foot tall idol of Lord Vishnu is standing on Garuda Peetha with Shankha-chakra and Gadha.
