Quartier: Fitzroy

When you know your place is missing the one item to set off the room but you can't find it then try this place.
Well stocked with an array of decor from mid century furniture to quirky industrial pieces and great artwork. If you can't find it here ask the staff. Jess and Eddie where very helpful and eventually found the piece I was needing which they tracked down for me.
Thank you guys.

If you're looking to browse or buy secondhand mid-20th century furniture and decorative items, find your way to Smith Street, Collingwood. There are several stores with things you'll like, and a range of prices. On the Fitzroy (west) side of Smith St, you'll find a wide glass frontage at #305. There are good quality items on the spacious entry level. Up some stairs you'll find smaller stalls and generally lower priced items. Visiting on a Saturday afternoon, I saw couples shopping for furniture.

It all started as an exploration of the Brunswick Street area looking for grunge and retro. Bargain hunting really. While we didn't find the bargains so much the area was fascinating as an area to explore. Well publicised locally the Brunswick/Gertrude/Smith Streets are known for restaurants and cafes, and retro shopping. We took a tram from Collins Street ( I think it is the 56 that goes up Brunswick Street) and got off at Johnston Street. We did find a great cafe for breakfast in a deli called Alimentari, but check out my separate review of that one!

While this is about the Smith Street Bazaar I will quickly touch on the surrounds. 1. Gertrude St. Boutiquey and didn't look cheap. Quite beautiful but not what we were looking for so we didn't stop. 2. Brunswick St - Was just waking up when we passed through but mainly restaurants and kitschy clothing stores - looked like more new clothes trying to look old. Grungy - yeah a bit, our type of thing? Nah.

3. Smith Street - we walked up Brunswick to Alexandra Parade then across Alexandra to Smith Street. This is where the adventure started. Close to A P on Smith Street firstly are a bunch of factory outlet stores. Adidas, Converse, Kathmandu, Macpac, surf stores, outdoor clothing and equipment, fashion, you get the picture. All obviously old stock but reasonably up to date and well priced. Perhaps better value than the "factory outlets" at Docklands and Bridge Street???

Once we walked back towards the city (back towards Johnston St direction from A P if that helps) past the factory we started hitting the pay dirt. The first place we went into was the Smith Street Bazaar. What a wonderland of mad stuff. A haven of 60's and 70's furniture, ornaments, pictures, statues, jewellery, you name it. I guess it's a conglomerate of various dealers but there was an original Grant Featherston chair, a nested 60's (possibly reconditioned) dining setting, a very cool 1986 designed Italian kettle, great stuff. My wife deals antiques and gold etc at home in NZ so she was able to explain some of the bits to me. No bargains, but what a selection. If you're in the market for retro or kitsch items, you gotta have a look in here. Of note, the young lass at the door was on the phone and took the time to greet us as we entered. We are very big on customer service so this was a good start and big plus for us. Of note is the shop is two tier and has has a short (about 10 steps) stir up to the second level.

As we moved on down Smith St we visited pawnbrokers with a lot of interesting gold jewellery, Sullivans Second hand had jewellery and a large stock of pawned guitars. Many were of little value but there were some good brand stuff, Fender and Gibson. I was too scared to ask what he had out back in the shop, I could see numerous cases. He may have had some nice vintage Fenders for all I know and that would be bad for my relationship with the wife... no. 296.

At 264 Smith St was JR and Trendlane Hair. What? Yes, this guy is a hairdresser and was cutting an old dears hair when we went in. Theres barely room for the haircutting as the shop is full of the owners collectibles he is selling off. You have to see it to believe it.

I got a very cool history book of Marilyn Munroe at the St Marks Recycled store no. 298 for $7 so found my bargain for the day!

We had to get to the tennis so bought a large hunk of spanikopita for lunch to take with us and back on the tram to Margaret Court. I love this city...
