A post town with a strong old-fashioned atmosphere. The view of the thatched roof from the observation deck is breathtaking. The specialty green onion soba is also exquisite! You can experience the unique way of eating by using green onions instead of chopsticks. Recommendation for those who love photography or are interested in traditional Japanese culture.

We headed north from Nasu Plateau into Shimogo Town, stopped at the edge of the tower, and then headed to Ouchijuku. From National Route 121, after entering the prefectural road and following the mountain road for several kilometers, there was a Ouchijuku parking lot beside the prefectural road. From there, as I entered Main Street in Ouchijuku, a different world was unfolding.
Private houses with thatched roofs line both sides of the dirt road. This was Ouchijuku, which still retains the townscape of the Edo period. Ōuchi-juku was a post town on the road connecting Aizu and Nikko, known as the Shimotsuke Kaidō, and played an important role as a post station for daimyōs and travelers traveling to Edo.

I'd wanted to go to Ouchi-juku for a while, so after checking the weather, I decided to go the day before.
Even though it was 11am on a weekday, the parking lot was full!
The view of the thatched-roof street from the observation deck was reminiscent of the Edo period (although I don't know much about the Edo period) and was amazing.
The spring onions with the soba were a bit spicy, but I was still satisfied.

On that day, I took the Tobu Limited Express Liberty Aizu 101, which departs at 06:43.
The route from Kita-Senju Station to Yunokami Onsen Station is served by three different railway companies: Tobu Railway, Yagan Railway, and Aizu Railway.
Tobu Railway accepts IC cards, but Yagan Railway and Aizu Railway do not.
Both Yagan Railway and Aizu Railway conducted ticket inspections on board.
In fact, several passengers on board had boarded the train using IC cards, which caused a dispute with the conductor.
Passengers were complaining, and the conductor had a hard time dealing with the situation.
At Aizu-Tajima Station, the transfer time between Tobu Limited Express Liberty Aizu 101 and Aizu Railway Rapid Relay 101 is very short, at just 7 minutes.
Wouldn't it be difficult to pay at Aizu-Tajima Station?
So I bought a ticket to Nishi-Wakamatsu Station at Kita-Senju Station.
The reason was to see the strange rocks and suspension bridge at Tonohetsuri Station.
On that day, I got off at Yunokami Onsen Station to see Ouchijuku and stay at Yunokami Onsen.
The next day, I went to have some Chinese noodles at Noodles & Dining Sakashin at Nishiwakamatsu Station.
It is valid for two days and you can get off at any station along the way.
However, you cannot purchase it with a credit card.
You can reserve and purchase the express ticket in advance on the Tobu Railway website and you can also assign a seat.
I recommend a seat on the left side of the train when heading to Aizuwakamatsu.
Tobu express trains take you to Aizu-Tajima without having to change trains.
The day I visited Misawaya was a Monday.
Since I had made a reservation in advance, I was able to enter the restaurant smoothly.
If you don't have a reservation, you have to wait 40 minutes, and on the previous Sunday, there was a 2-hour wait.
I had a large serving of Takato soba (1,320 yen + 330 yen).
A free palate cleanser was provided, a service not available in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
On this day, we had lightly seasoned konnyaku and pickles.
It was new soba season, so the soba had a good flavor and we were able to enjoy it even more.
However, it was impossible to bite into an entire stalk of spring onion.
The combination of the thick soba soup and the dashi broth was also excellent.

I had been to a quiet post town on the Kisoji road before, and I had imagined this one would be similar, but when I visited, it exceeded my expectations in a good way.
First of all, the good thing is that the roads are not paved, and although it is probably not exactly like the scenery that travelers saw hundreds of years ago, it has been preserved in a similar way, so you can fully enjoy the feeling of going back in time. The flowers planted along the road are well-maintained and blend beautifully with the scenery.
The next point is a matter of opinion, but almost all of the road is a souvenir shop or restaurant, so you can walk around feeling like you are walking through a food stall festival, and there are shops selling Fukushima souvenirs all in one place, and there are also shops selling wildflower seedlings, so it feels like an outdoor department store for Fukushima folk crafts, and both adults and children in elementary school and above can enjoy shopping.
The people at the inns will have to preserve this wonderful town, so of course it will cost money to maintain it, and since it is a place with a lot of tourists, I think it is a great idea to operate it in this way.
The Townscape Exhibition Hall, a reconstruction of an Edo-period inn located about halfway through the post town, requires a separate admission fee, but it allows you to fully experience what it was like back then, so it's definitely worth visiting if you have the chance.

An incredible place which sends you back in time. How glad travellers in olden times must have been to find a street full of houses, inns and restaurants in the midst of the mountains. The souvenir shops which make up most of the village try to have a point of difference from each other and are more or less successful. Yen 500 parking fee is good value for entry. The shopkeepers are friendly - i.e.-not just 'buy this, buy that'.
Just avoid the hoards that come with the sightseeing buses for a really good experience.

I went there by bus from Yunokami Onsen.
It was a weekday, but I made a reservation for the bus just in case, but it was full.
There was room on the return bus, so it might be better to just make a reservation for the outbound trip.
There was almost no snow in Aizuwakamatsu even though it was February, but there was still snow left in Ouchijuku, so I could experience the winter atmosphere.
Many shops were closed for the winter or closed on this day, so only about half of the shops were open.
However, there were just the right number of customers everywhere, so I didn't have to wait in line, and I was able to leisurely enjoy my shingoro and tempura manju.
The tempura manju was surprisingly delicious.
The old lady at the amazake shop was cute and I wanted to take a photo, but I can't drink amazake so I just looked at her.
Anyway, I think it's a place to enjoy the atmosphere, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Next time I'd like to go when all the shops are open.

According to the guidebook, it is very popular and parking is difficult on weekends, but perhaps because the autumn leaves were late this year, when I visited on a weekday in October, it was not too crowded and I was able to park smoothly.
At the popular soba restaurant, I waited about 10 minutes before being shown to a seat. I had soba noodles eaten with "green onions" as I often see on TV. They said it was new soba, but the taste was just average. I was surprised at how expensive it was. The building was charming and I enjoyed the atmosphere.
As a tourist destination, I think they need to put in a little more effort to attract "return visitors." I visited because I was invited by a guidebook, but my honest impression is that it was "not that good...". I think it would be more fun if there was a little more variety in the restaurants.

This time I went to Aizuwakamatsu city, so I went to Ouchijuku, which I had always wanted to visit. It took about 40 minutes by car along a mountain road from Aizuwakamatsu city to get there. Ouchijuku is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and along the road there are rows of thatched-roof villages, giving it a traditional feel and making you feel like you've traveled back in time to the Edo period.

As this is situated in Fukushima is it safe to get there ? I mean from the 2011 crisis .
Rédigé le 11 mars 2020
My visitation during at Fukushima are quite pleasant. Overall the enviroment which i presumed should be safe for visiting.

You could google for the bus schedule. I tried posting the website links here but apparently TripAdvisor doesn't allow that.
Note that the bus service to the village halts during the winter months because of icy roads. According to the bus schedule site service is up to 23rd November.

Rédigé le 29 septembre 2018
