From Nasu Kogen Observatory to Sessho Rock via Nasu Onsen Shrine. There is a well-maintained promenade in the area, which is suitable for walking. Volcanic gases are gushing from the lava of the killing rocks, and the gases tend to accumulate near the surface. Therefore, when walking with 🐩, we were careful not to be affected by the gas and avoided a long stay. Except for the photo shoot, I was holding 🐩.

There was a place called Sesshōseki in Nasu Plateau. When I parked my car in the parking lot, the smell of sulfur was already there.
Along with the smell of sulfur, a boardwalk runs through the area of desolate rocks where no green plants can grow. It is said that volcanic gas gushes out in the area around here, and this gas kills birds and animals, so it is called 'Satsuseki' (killing stone). It has a unique atmosphere, like the "... hell" in volcanoes around Japan.

Take a local bus from JR Kuroiso Station for about 35 minutes, get off at Nasu Yumoto, and then walk for about 10 minutes to reach Sessho-seki.
The surrounding area is filled with the smell of sulfur, so be careful not to stay there for long.
You can access the area from either Shika no Yu, a day-trip hot spring in Nasu Yumoto, or from Nasu Onsen Shrine.

"Sessho-seki" (killing stone) is a lava rock found near Nasu Yumoto Onsen in Nasu Town, Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture. It is said that this name came from the fact that volcanic gases erupt in the surrounding area, causing the deaths of birds and animals. The boardwalk was created from there.
This area was once home to countless Jizo statues, known as "Hell of a Thousand Bodhisattvas." The area is known as "Sessho-seki Garden" and is a popular tourist spot. This area is also known as "Sai no Kawara." The overall image is of the afterlife?

Speaking of Nasu Plateau, what is your first impression? It may be one of the famous tourist attractions, or it may be one of the places you plan to visit. Speaking of it, it may be endless scenery and fame. Of course you can There is something special about it that makes it popular. Maybe you have heard of it or have been there before, but your impression of it always stops at the natural scenery with distinct four seasons throughout the year.
Speaking of the scenery between the Sesshoshi Stone and the Nasu Plateau, it may be a contrast, and it may also give rise to a strange feeling. Of course, unless you have been there before, you will see nothing but desolation on the Internet, which will make people stare. There are thousands of Ksitigarbha statues one after another, and the atmosphere becomes even more real when you get there. I really can’t tell whether it’s solemn or a strange sight.
Speaking of legends, maybe you have seen them before. As for the truth, it is just a story. But I think the main reason for most people to go here is to see the killing stone. Speaking of such a famous killing stone, a person mentioned it a while ago. The news suddenly started again. As I am not so careful about this, I may not be able to see its original appearance. Maybe when I step into this historical killing stone, the strange feeling seems to exist, because in this hell-like area, It looks even more out of place with the green grassland beside it.
To put it simply, the historical Sessile Stone belongs to Nikko National Park, but in fact it is a bit far away from the Nikko that everyone is familiar with. If you are going from Tokyo, then take the Shinkansen and get off at Nasu Shiobara, and then transfer to Nasu Yumoto. bus.
This day's itinerary departs from Tokyo at 06:40 in the morning and arrives in Nasushihara at 07:49. The reason why it is so early is to transfer to the bus. The bus departure time is 08:00 in the morning. To take the bus, you need to come to the station. At the west exit, you will find the bus boarding area as soon as you exit the station.
Since the arrival time is actually very short before the bus departs, it is recommended that you use the restroom at the station first, because it takes 52 minutes to reach the destination from the station. It is recommended that friends who take the bus prepare change, the fare is 1170 yen (2023/02), I don’t have the impression that I can pay with an IC card. Try to prepare a thousand yen so that you can use the machine to exchange change on the car. You can also get the coupon at the back door and pay the fare at the front door and get off.
There is a reason why I chose to visit Sesshōseki this time. Originally, I wanted to go to the Stained Glass Museum. I personally yearn for the Glass Museum. I think I had a deep impression at the Hakone Sculpture Museum and I really liked it. The reason I didn't go in the end was because of the traffic. Even if you take a bus, you have to walk a short distance to get there.
I thought about this before setting off, and later decided to record the bus attractions on the same departure route, and finally changed it to the Killing Stones, an attraction farther away. The weather was not very good on the day I arrived, as long as it didn't rain. I'm very grateful, it feels bad when it rains in winter.
The weather was not bad when I got on the bus at the west exit, but I felt a little uneasy when it was cloudy when going to the mountainous area. I got off all the way to Nasu Yumoto Tourist Station. The boarding and alighting locations at this station are all at the tourist information center, so I'll wait a moment. You'll get on the bus here as well for the return trip.
Finally, we arrived at Nasu Yumoto. After getting off the car and walking forward, you will see the scenic spot of the Sesshoshi Stones. Because there is no need to look for it nearby. You will see it when you get off the car and look ahead. It takes 5 minutes to walk. It's within a short distance.
It's strange to say that only that scenic spot is like this. It feels a bit strange when you look closer. This scenic spot has a wooden plank road on the left and right. Basically, no matter whether you go left or right first, you will eventually see the killing stone. , but generally we start from the right side first.
This attraction not only has the Killing Stone, but maybe not many people come to this attraction in winter, especially those who come by bus. When I came, there was only one group of tourists. They drove here to take a look, so as long as no one comes here, , it feels very strange. I can’t tell myself. As for whether there is a pungent sulfur smell, I think it may be because of the wind in winter. Even if there is, I won’t feel much.
The legendary stories here can be found online, so I won’t go into details here. Basically, if your purpose is just to see the Killing Stone, you can ignore the rest until the end, because you can see it at a glance, but you really have to see it. You still have to walk to see it. For most people, if they come here and walk around along the plank road, about 40 minutes is enough.
If it wasn't for the bus, the time might be shorter. It's more like a drop-in attraction and you don't need to come here. Unless you intend to go to Nasu Plateau and stop by, the legend always gives people a very mysterious feeling.
But when I see the Ksitigarbha statues one after another, it’s hard to say what the characteristics of this place are. But when I see the legendary stories, I may feel that they only intangibly deepen the story and give people the impression that the killing stone is the most important. It is mainly a stone. Its mysterious legend may be more familiar from what is said on the Internet. In fact, the killing stone I saw has been cracked.
The path I took was from right to left. There is a resting place here, which is the wooden house. Maybe someone will take a rest there in the summer, but you won’t see anyone there in the winter. The most important thing is that there are very few people coming, and besides, It’s tourists like me who travel by bus.
From there, walk to the visitor center and wait for the bus. Because the bus usually has a distance of one hour, if you miss the bus, you have to wait for another hour. I think there is a restroom in the visitor center. If you feel it is windy outside, you can wait for the bus at the tourist center. But please be sure to look out the window, so as not to be like me and be blown away by the heater inside and almost forget to take the bus. The boarding point is the same as the one where you just got off. The arrival time of the bus is 09:55. You can Arrive at the stop sign 5 minutes early and wait for the bus.
I thought Nasu Plateau was an unpopular attraction before, but I realized I was wrong after getting on the bus, because there were many passengers taking the bus back to the station, more than originally expected. They might be people visiting Nasu, which should be done in winter. There are quite a few, but the killing stones are not the main target of everyone’s visit.
As for the legend of whether the seal of the Killing Stone has been cracked or not, it may be an imagination, but everyone comes to visit the Killing Stone for this reason. Maybe they come to this place just for a visit. My feelings about this place are On the contrary, I was more impressed by the Thousand Tizos. The most important thing is that I have never seen so many Ksitigarbhas. I just passed by the scenic spots and visited them without going out of my way.
Generally speaking, it is necessary to realize that the killing stones here are no longer what they used to be. As for whether they come from it or not, it is a relatively flat recommendation. If you like purely natural attractions, I do not recommend this place. It will be somewhat disappointing. The discomfort I feel is not purely due to the smell. Personally, I think it is rather secondary.
If you want to see unique attractions, you can come and take a walk. You won’t have any expectations about what it will be like. Maybe the attractions are good or not. You can’t compare them based on the reviews you’ve seen before. But I didn’t have any expectations when I came here. What can you see? It’s just that the round trip transportation fee is quite expensive. It’s more realistic. If you still want to come after seeing the pictures, then you might as well visit. If you think it’s just like this, then you don’t have to go to this scenic spot specially.

I've been curious about this place for a while.
I heard that the main attraction, the Killing Stone, had cracked, and it was a spectacular crack.
The whole area smelled of sulfur, which made it very mysterious. There were also many Jizo statues, which was quite spooky. I think the atmosphere was similar to Mount Osore.
It's free, including parking, so you'd be missing out if you don't see it.
