Recently completed the clamber up Mt Cooroora, which is both exhilarating and exhausting. It gets steep towards the top but there are , steps chipped into the rockface, railings, chains and even metal stairs to help you along. Not sure how climbers managed before these aids were in place. There are signs at the start of the walk warning that the track can be very slippery in wet weather but when I climbed the area was having one of its driest periods in many years and I found the dust-covered rocks forming the track along the steeper parts of the track to be very slippery, treacherously so for the downhill section. Take your time, and you'll have a very rewarding experience

I made the mistake of commuting to this with having done no form of exercise in a very long time with friends who do exercise regularly.

So I ended up doing the hike mostly on my own while they went off at their own pace.

I had to take many breaks and drank a lot of water but it was beautiful when I finally got to the top.

We had a nice break up there before heading back down which also took time as I had jelly legs and had to be careful.

I also discovered I had a nice big fat leech on my after I had finished the walk so look out for those too.

We climbed Mt Cooroora and while parts of it were very steep the views from the top were worth the effort.

I simply didn't know what I was getting myself into, I am fit, but this required a different level of fitness. I wasn't going to be put off, the scramble was the best thing I have done in ages. Tip is to leave early in the morning in warm conditions, the pale rockface was shining in the morning sun, it gets rather hot, in hindsight leaving at 8 am this fine October morning was too late.
To reach the start of the hiking track it's a short drive out of the township of Pomona, Mount Cooroora is a 439m high volcanic plug, the goal is to reach the top for the spectacular views. Watch your footing, wear sensible shoes, follow the dirt/ rocky path, steel staircases, scramble up rockfaces grabbing hold of whatever you can: steel chain, tree roots, rocks. Our climb took forty minutes, as amateurs, and stopping to take photos, being passed by a few locals on their regular fitness workout. Going down wasn't as hard as I had thought, still challenging on the knees, holding onto the chain and going with the force, I loved it! The reward was refreshments back at one of the local cafes in Pomona. A great morning out, can't wait to do it again.

Enjoyable challenging walk / scramble. Had heard others pegged this at about double the difficulty of Mt Coolum and that is about right. I kept on being overtaken !

Definitely gets the heart rate up. Great views at the top.

Nice grass area next to carpark with tables and benches to wind down. Popped into township (2 mins away) for lunch after.

BTW don't trust Mrs Google to get there else you'll be coming down dirt tracks. Get to the town and you can't miss it from there.

The walk to the top is difficult in parts. There are chains to assist you as you go up and down. The path is a little narrow in parts so selecting the time of day to climb is recommend. Once at the top the views are spectacular. Not recommend to attempt the climb in wet weather as rocks likely to be slippery, water is a must. Allow a couple of hours to complete the climb

Awesome views and a real sense of achievement at the top. I went with my 2 daughters aged 5 and 6.

I wouldn't recommend this climb for young kids unless they are sensible, follow instructions and have experience with steep, challenging climbs. You really need to keep your kids very close once the steep climbing towards the top begins.

If you can compare to other local mountain treks with kids, with Mt Tinbeerwah a 1 out of 10 for difficulty, Mt Ngungun a 3, Mt Coolum a 4, then this would be around 7 or 8 out of 10... but so worth it! Whenever we drive past it conjures up fantastic memories.

This climb is very rewarding if you make it to the top. That being said, this climb is not for everyone. I do not recommend taking young children on this hike. Part of the climb to the top includes chains bolted into the rocks, which helps. But it's so easy to slip, and you need to have upper arm strength. And then the last bit of the climb is rock scrambling. You will get a good workout doing this hike. Make sure you bring a lot of water, and be prepared to get very dirty.

We've now been up this mountain 4 times, in changing weather and with different people. It is challenging, but worth it for the views and the experience, and the test of stamina. We are 60 and have made it up in 32 minutes (best time), average 45 minutes each way. Down is harder than up, due to the need for more care. Howthe King of the Mountain managed this from Pomona township, return, in 26 minutes beggars belief.
