This has to be the Blue Mountains most inspiring and raw and emotion invoking lookout. We decided not to walk, rather to hire some mountain e-bikes from Blue Mountains biking Adventures, to get us to this amazing destination. First of all, the e-bikes are just so good and you'll will wonder why you waited this long, or why you haven't even thought or considered using them, on these blue mountains fire trails.
Riding on the Hanging Rock trail is such a progressive ride. It starts off easier to build those it on is confident, and then gives a few more challenges towards the end, at the lookout. Great views either side due to all the bushfires clearing out a lot of the bush.... Which by the way is growing back magnificently. Flannel flowers and Waratahs I very prevalent at the moment, along with the grass trees.
But Hanging Rock, wow. The trial on the way back to Blackheath, using an e-bike, certainly takes out the uphill grind and makes it probably more fun and the downhill getting there. We love you E bikes and we will be back to ride Narrowneck.
The whole lookout just has you floating above the world. We got a mystery rainy day , and i have to say what i way to see it. We were immersed in the clouds, and a little gust of wind every now and then just cleared up the valley to show us how beautiful the Grose wilderness is.
We descended from Baltzer lookout down a walking track to a floating rock platform. From here we will able to look down to the left, or the west, and see Hanging Rock looking back up at us. We were feeling brave and energetic, so we've been traverse done the side of the mountain to get an face full of Hanging Rock up-close-and-personal, and this is a total total different feeling/experience from looking at it from high above.
At this time, the spring flowers and ground cover so amazing. We even saw a grass tree with it's big spike covered in thousands of little white flowers and native bees. We're told these flowers on the spike/stems only after bushfires.

We spent a good 45 minutes at this amazing destination and will 100% be back again and again with visitors.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we did, and do yourself a favour get some e-bikes!!!

Oh give him the extra energy we had at the end of this 15 km return trip, we grab some lunch and headed up to Evans lookout and did probably the most amazing 5 km hike I can ever encounter, that being the Grand Canyon hike in Blackheath.

WHAT ARE DAY!

The drive to the firetrail gate is unpaved, not too many potholes (much easier drive than to kanangra Boyd walls). The 1st firetrail gate is closed making the mostly flat walk from the firetrail gate to Baltzer lookout 5.1km one way. When facing the valley whilst on the lookout, the scramble down to hanging rock is on the left, approx 300m. No one, while I was there, jumped the 80cm to get on to the hanging rock itself.

G'day, thanks for the review. But I have a feeling you may have put your review in the wrong place. I run a mountain biking service that allows customers to ride out and back, not walk :-) Happy trails

I have walked out to hanging rock before, today i decided to ride. Even thkugh its wintwr there were flowers to see. In waratah season it must blaze with colour all along the walk as there are so many plants. It was a lot more fun on the pushbike. The track is a firetrail, so wide and solid but enough dips and little rocks to make you pay attention. Im not the fittest person but managed it all well enough. The walk down from the lookout to hanging rick is a but tricky but if you take your time its well worth it.

Hanging Rock has two very different appeals to people visiting.

Before I get into those nice things I need to warn you, the walk can be long (pleasant but long) and there are no facilities around that I could see. The area is better suited for cyclists in the sense that the track is pretty good to take your bicycle but it does not exclude anybody from doing to 10 kilometre return trail. Bring water and your camera, the photos at the canyon are amazing. Best viewing time is towards sunset.

Now... the two aspects for you to visit this place.

The first one is obviously the rock itself and the view of the canyon. Both are spectacular and well worth the visit. The trail taking you there (Burramoko Trail) is a sandy 5 kilometres long trail that offers very little on the first 3.8 kilometres but the last metres are gorgeous. The trail ends close to the Baltzer lookout (about 50 metres before it), from there you will need to walk another 300 metres to get to the Hanging Rock, some people jump the gap between the rock and the wall of the canyon... but you need to be aware that every year there are a few people unlucky enough to end at the end of the division between the rock and the wall (about 40 metres drop or more).

The second aspect quite appealing is the trail if you are a cyclist. Is quite fun to do although you need to have some skills and good judgement. Especially around the 4th kilometre, you will find a series of humps in your descent, these humps have sand around (remember about the sandy trail I talked about earlier?) and, given you are going downhill, the sand on the trail and your speed... well... let's say we got the word from one of the guides telling us that we either end up doing it slowly or we end up at the hospital with a broken neck. We were braking all the descent and it got to a point in which my back wheel was locked yet I continued to gain speed little by little. Some of these concerns can be addressed if it has rained before, but this winter was quite dry... there was a lot of dry sandy surfaces.

Although the Hanging Rock was spectacular, the trail to this spot is less interesting than other walks. The cliff top trail, Grose Valley, and Grand Canyon track are much more beautiful. This track is basically an access road for fire trucks during a bushcfire. It is very exposed and is not the place to go when it is windy. There were losts of cyclists, and so this may suit a cycling enthusiast more than walkers.

Thanks for reviewing the hanging rock as a walk, but you have actually reviewed My mountain biking business product, the hanging rock trail. I totally agree there are better walks. But it is a great great bike ride, as you witnessed by all the cyclists out and about on that day. Would you mind removing this review as it's not in the right place to put it, and ist is affecting my business. Many thanks Sam

Situated in Blue Mountain National Park, Hanging Rock is a thrilling location. Few meters away from Blackheath train station, the journey of walk/cycling is for 4km (one way) distance. The route is a fire trail which is straight and easy. This fire trail ends at Balterzs Lookout point, an unidentifiable path goes steep down to the ultimate destination, Hanging Rock.
The broken rocks and dried roots make tat steep path more difficult. Be cautious and hold onto something while taking enthusiastic steps 😃
To reach the edge of rock, you have to gather guts and jump across a gap. It's a dizzy encounter for some people.
The view from the edge is incredibly stunning and peaceful.
Trust me, you will forget about the height and vulnerability to die once you see tat view of overlapping mountains, sun rays through clouds and fresh breeze.
It's worth visiting in a lifetime.
Avoid this place on a rainy day strictly.
