It was a 4 hour drive from Yuntaishan to GuoLiang village. The main road was closed and under construction and there was a new road that leads to the shuttle bus stop. We walked about 1.3km through the impressive tunnel, dug by hands and enjoyed a hearty lunch at a rooftop restaurant, excellent choice by David. A short walk through the heart of the village was untouched by time, rustic and stone hewn, gives you a good idea of village life. Then we had travel to Zhengzhou to stay the night to catch our flight at 7.55 am. David was very helpful and thoughtful . He arranged with the hotel to provide a light takeaway breakfast for us as we had to leave at 5.00am. He went the extra mile to check us in. Thank you David for excellent service

This man-made tunnel road is extremely magnificent and shows what people can do when they are determined. This has long-term benefits for many generations to come.
In 1971, Guoliang Villagers, with little engineering knowledge, decided to build a tunnel road through the mountains to get better connected to the outside world. It ended up taking five years to complete, and some of the workers died in the process. It currently ranks as the ninth largest man-dug tunnel through steep, rugged cliffs, and is located in the Taihang Mountains of China. This two-way traffic cliff promenade is approximately five metres in height, and has a width of four metres. It was built by thirteen local villagers, without electrical power pr machinery. Their main tools were hammers, steel bars, and explosives.
This passageway is among China’s most amazing and dangerous-to-construct roads and has the most beautiful natural views. Travelling along this cliff hanging roadway, I suggest lots of stops, so as to enjoy all the breath-taking scenery and landscape. Also, be sure to visit Guoliang Village. Without the courage and determination of its people, this unbelievable roadway would never have been built.

I visited here as part of a 32-day private holiday with China Private Tours.
This attraction, a couple of hours out from Zhengzhou, featured on the World’s Most Dangerous Roads TV special, which is why I wanted to check it out. The road has been carved out through the cliff face and it’s fascinating, though not really dangerous because you have to take a shuttle bus and most of the time the road is one way up. The village on the cliff top is commercialised but still interesting. There are some great lookouts across the valley to the road winding up through the mountain. There isn’t a lot of English around so a guide is advisable. There is a scary part of this trip, the drive down off the mountain. These are sheer cliffs and the shuttle takes you down a different way and while you’re being driven along the cliffs, you wonder exactly where are they going to find any gap to build a road? There is one and there’s no comforting carving here – it’s a steep slippery one lane road with very little safety fencing. Add to that impatient shuttle drivers driving old buses relying on their old brakes to get around the corners. This road down should have been on that TV show. Not boring that’s for sure. This site will probably become more popular in the future with good reason. It’s definitely worth the day trip to see.

There are many trails up the mountains from the village and there is enough there to hike for a few days. The highlight is the tunnel! I believe you can catch a bus to the area from Zhengzhou or Luoyang bus stations, but we had a private coach booked. About 3 hours ride.

I travelled to Guoliang Village (Guoliangcun) from Zhengzhou.
Because of past experiences in some areas of China where very little English is spoken I decided to use the services of an English speaking guide and I was very pleased I did so because going by public bus, as I did, would have been very difficult for me. I found the Zhengzhou based guide by doing a search on the internet.
The route we took was from the New Northern Bus Station in Zhengzhou to Xinxiang (about 2 hours - there are frequent buses) then another bus Xinxiang to Huixian (about 1 hour - there are frequent buses) then Huixian to the entrance to the Guoliang scenic area (about 2 hours - I think 4 buses a day - caution this may vary depending on the time of the year). Total travel time from Zhengzhou was about 6 hours. At the moment the buses from Huixian to Guoliang travel over a fair bit of dirt road through the mountains but they are building a new road which will be open sometime in 2016 and this should make the trip, for this segment, a lot quicker.
At the entrance to the scenic area you need to pay a fee (125 yuan - there is also a discounted rate for seniors) which covers you for 2 days in the scenic area and allows you to use the buses up to the village and back down again. There is also a shuttle buggy from Guoliang Village to the Shot Tower and the Sky Ladder (the old walking track up the side of the mountain to Guoliang) which is 5 yuan each way.
There is free wifi at the entrance and at other bus waiting points within the scenic area.
From the entry area the bus travels up to Guoliang Village through the tunnel road and then from the village you can walk back down the road into the tunnel section for a closer look and photos. Once you have finished with the tunnel road there is a bridge across to the cliff on the other side and you can have a panoramic view of sections of the tunnel road as it goes along through the cliff.
An overnight stay in Guoliang is necessary if you use public transport from Zhengzhou as I did,
Guoliang village has plenty of accommodation in many small hotels/hostels. I paid 120 yuan for a room for myself and the room had hot water, reverse cycle air conditioning for heating and free wifi - the room was fine except that the bed was a bit hard (this seems to be the norm a lot of the time in China) and they did not supply towels or toilet paper. Most hotels that I checked had free wifi but not all had hot water or heating so it pays to check if you get heating and hot water in the room.
Food wise most accommodation places had a small restaurant and there were a number of small restaurants and food stalls in the street. The food that I had - noodles for dinner and a thick pancake with a pocket with fried eggs and bean sprouts was delicious.
The return bus trip to the entry point of the scenic area takes a different route and this windy route travels down the side of steep gorges and is a spectacular trip in itself.
There is a large car park at the entry area for those who travel in private vehicles (I don't know how much the car park fees are) and some restaurants and small convenience stores.
A trip to Guoliang Village and Guoliang Tunnel road is a not to be missed experience despite some difficulty in getting there.

Rédigé le 16 mars 2018
im planning on going solo this winter to china and of course, ill visit Guoliang. however, i have a few questions:
1. how much do private tours/guides cost for a 1-2 day stay?
2. is it possible to walk instead of drive to the village so i can enjoy the scenery more?
3. as it will be winter, january, how dangerous is it going to be compared to dryer months?
