Overlooking a beach, this fort sits on hill in Kormantin-Abandanze, Central Region. The hill offers a breathtaking view of the area. In 1640, the fort was destroyed by fire. The fort was refortified by the British and in 1661 the Royal African Company assumed ownership and it became the headquarters of the English Gold Coast activities. The Dutch re-captured the fort in 1665 and named it Fort Amsterdam. In 1811, the local people captured the fort and it is believed that the fort then became one of the first large enslavement structures. The name Kormantin was synonymous on the Caribbean islands for rebellious enslaved people. Fort Amsterdam is now in ruins and the Ghanian government has made an effort to preserve the site. However, the remnants of its purpose as an enslavement structure is clear, including holding cells for men and women and a "Door of No Return".
The Fort is open from 9-4:30 pm and the entrance fee is about 10USD for foreign tourists. To get to the entrance requires a steep climb of about 100 feet.

Eines der wirklich sehenswerten Sklaven-Forts an der ghanaischen Küste. Die Führung durch diese Gebäudekomplexe vermittelt einem einen sehr guten Einblick in die schreckliche Zeit des Sklavenhandels. Sehenswert!

One of the smaller formally gold and slave trading forts in Ghana. Many people from the US, Jamaica, Suriname and other countries visit this place because their family originated here. The local guide however told that many of the slaves where transported by african trading caravans from as far as Mali. The guide gave very much detailed information about the fort and the gold and slave trading in general. He charged 10 Cedis.

This fort is a little off the beaten path, but it is a very worthwhile visit. While Cape Coast tends to get all the tourists, this fort is smaller but has many of the same elements. The fact that one can visit alone is in of itself special.

We stopped to view Fort Amsterdam, previously known as Fort Cormantine when built by the British in 1645. It sits abandoned just off the Accra-Cape Coast Road on a hill overlooking the ocean in Abandze. We were surrounded by local children when we visited, but the fort is otherwise uninhabited, but still in amazing condition for such an old building.
It involves a walk of about 100 yards up a hill and consists of several levels, including beautiful views of the beach below. There is not much to identify it, other than a plaque on the side of the fort.
Fun to have it all to ourselves (with the added local children) and to reflect on the history that happened there so many years ago. A little gem that likely is not visited often, but is readily and easily accessible.
