Since we had enough time during our stay in Split, we also visited the archaeological excavations in Salona one afternoon. There are numerous remains from Roman times in the area, the cemetery known as Kapljuč. The sarcophagi along the road are definitely worth seeing. Since only a few visitors find their way to Salona, the visit is also a pleasant change from the busy old town.

Kapljuc is the old and Roman cemetery located in Ancient Salona ruins, near Split, in the center of Dalmatia Region. It is a place, where you can see some graves and they are located following the old road to enter to the Roman city. It is interesting, specially for Roman Ages-lovers. Really, you only can see some graves on the ground.

This is the location of the oldest cemeteries of ancient Salona, containing both pre-christian and christian burials. Greco-Roman tradition dictated that the dead be buried outside towns, often outside town walls. Cemeteries were formed along roads that approached and exited towns as is the case with Kapljuc. Here at the entrance are 16 sarcophagi. Most of the sarcophagi are well preserved, including the tombstones with inscriptions of epitaph indicating that christians were buried there in the 4th century. Only one was not christian, which dated from the 3rd century. Further into Kapljuc were christian cemeteries proper. A church was then built over christian graves. All that remains of the church is the foundation and very low walls forming the outlines of a church.

The old Christian cemetery of Kapljuč (named after the nearby creek) with the remains of the oldest Salonitan cemetery basilica (the Five Martyrs’ Basilica), is located about 200 m away from the famous amphitheatre, near the town walls. The basilica dates from the 4th century, and is dedicated to the priest Asterie and four soldiers of the emperor’s guard, who being Christians, suffered martyrdom during the Diocletian’s prosecutions in 304. They were buried in a small cemetery outside the town walls, firstly pagan and later after their burial and the building of the church, Christian. The archaeological complex of Kapljuč includes the remains of the three nave cathedral (basilica urbana) with its octagonal baptistery, bishop's court and out-houses and the remains of the bishop Honorius basilica with a ground plan in the shape of a Greek cross, a few memorials and annexes, the cemetery and outbuildings with a preserved press. Thus in Kapljuč, as well as in other Salonitan cemeteries, there are several layers of various graves dated from the first to the fourth centuries, from simple and humble ones to fine coffins, sarcophaguses and vaulted mausoleums, including several dozen valuable and rich inscriptions. All in all, the site is rich in history and culture. Interesting place with quiet atmosphere. Nice surroundings. Good location. Easy to spot. Worth a stop.
