Visitors from all over europe & even Bulgarians were all amazed at the raw beauty of the rocky coastline and pristine beaches. The villages are like a step back in time, Brodilovo & Bulgari are thriving rural idylls with their own soft micro climate. Long dry summers and brief winters, with shoulder seasons often around 15 degrees, at night! Certainly the last refuge for flora and fauna in Europe.

Sinemorets is absolutely worth a visit in November! It is situated on a peninsula south of the mouth of the Velokarte River in the Strandja Nature Park. The Park is the largest protected area in Bulgaria. The estuary of the Veleka river forms a beautiful sandpit as it flows in the sea. The forests all around shine in a glorious gold and yellow, chances are good for warm weather and sun. And you can even in late season get great food to affordable prices in the cafe at the strand.

A great way to explore part of this Nature Park is with a 2 hour boat trip with Veleka Tours. We were staying at the Bella Vista Hotel in Sinemorets and booked through our TUI Rep for €23 each.
Good clean boat with easy access from their mooring next to the metal road bridge built by the Germans during the war and still going strong. The mooring is only a few hundred metres from the fabulous beach.
The tour started with a trip up river, past the point where the forest becomes sub-tropical and we saw vegetation that we had only seen in Africa previously. On the way we saw two species of turtle sunning themselves on fallen tree trunks that stuck up from the water. We also saw eagles, purple herons, kingfishers and other birds that we couldn’t identify. This is a strictly enforced protected part of the nature park, and a boat is the only way to access it. The river appeared very clean and un-polluted and many people swim in it close to it’s mouth at Veleka Beach.
When we reached the furthest point up-river that tourists are allowed, the boat turned and followed the river all the way to Veleka Beach where it enters the sea. This is a beautiful beach, and seeing from a boat on the river gives a different perspective.
The boat gave us an excellent opportunity to see the wildlife and the forest in a very comfortable, peaceful and relaxed way. It really is a very beautiful stretch of river, and the captain who was very friendly, gave us a lot of interesting information and knew exactly where to go to get the best views of the turtles.

We are just back after 3 days in Strandja NP. We stayed at Silkosia guest house with Fillip who I had contacted via the visitstrandja webpage.
Strandja national park is an amazing place offering forest walks, waterfalls, quaint villages, churches, chapels, a stunning coastal walk and some wonderful festivals. We were at the firedancing festival in Bulgari which is a spiritual experience. If you are looking for natural and cultural experience in a pristine place, untouched by mainstream tourism- this is the place for you. Fillip was an excellent and enthusiastic guide, passionate about his people and local culture. Cannot recommend him enough.

You will be surprised if you visit this natural park that can be found only 56 kms from Primorsko city in Bulgaria. The natural park is practically a lime stone gorge with lush green vegetation. The gorge is famous for its pristine clear mountain river that tops the surface hidden in the valley's heart. It is a rocky path and steep too but once you are there you will love it.
Get some ANTI MOSQUITO SPRAY and apply it to your skin as the little bastards love that place.
The gorge has one or two towers on top that allow you to make panoramic photos and videos.
My new Bulgarian friends have shown us the source of the water spring and we drank from it. It is the most pure water you can drink in all the country...amazing place.
Note to the authorities, more cleaning should be made on regular basis. And garbage baskets applied to much more places during the path.
Oh..there are small caves too :)

This is a lovely area of Bulgaria, easily accessible from Burgas and Sozopol. We found a Bulgarian who took us in his car around a scenic route (charging only 50 lev plus petrol) and we visited Thracian and Roman tombs, a village with 18th and 19th century traditional houses, and a fishery. We had a very good lunch at a fish farm and then went for a walk through the most beautiful woods, crossing the river by stepping stones and a wooden plank.
Some of the roads in Strandja are very bad, which can be hard on your car's suspension and tyres.
If you go, it's a good idea to take your passport in case you want to go near the Turkish border. We were stopped by border police who checked our identity. The situation in Syria has meant that some refugees who went to Turkey try to get into the EU via Bulgaria, so they are extra vigilant.

As our hobby is photographing butterflies and birds, we decided to try Bulgaria. After coming across 'visit strandja ' website, I contacted Anja who proceeded to organize our holiday for us. She was so helpful, answering every question I had.
She arranged a rental car from the airport, and the bed and breakfast accommodation thought out the week. The pack she had sent us included the maps and all detailed directions to get us from one place to another, and any walks we may choose to do on the way.
We went on May 20th, a little early for butterflies, but still captured some lovely pictures, especially the fritillaries. The birds are difficult to see,but it was a joy to hear the nightingales every stop we made.
The villages we stayed in were very interesting, where the locals spoke to us in Bulgarian, and we spoke in English, but somehow we got by! The accommodation was very good, and we also had our evening meals provided by the guesthouse.
On our last day we drove back up to the lakes at Burgas to spend the day with a bird guide, arranged by Anja. It was a very enjoyable day,a good end to a very interesting week. We had been blessed with lovely weather, sunny and around max 28c.
If you enjoy nature, then visit Strandja. We are a retired couple.

Mijne heren,,
mevr. Lotte Wachenhausen
