No the horse ride is not mandatory at all, it's just for people who don't want to walk the 2 kms. The only other way is walking.

It''s not easy. You need to get to Chachapoyas which is the main town in the area. It's a nice town but a pain to get to from Trujillo as the only way is by road as there is no airport there. If you wanted to fly I think you have to go back to Lima and even then the nearest airport is Tarapoto which is 300+ kms away. We hired a car and driver and it was a long drive of 12 hours+ if i remember. You can get a bus from Trujillo to Chiclayo and then another bus from Chiclayo to Chachapoyas but still is going to be a long drive. If you have the money I would arrange a car and driver. On the upside Chachapoyas is a really nice town and there are other things to do in the area like Gotca waterfall etc. We drove both ways. In hindsight I would have driven there and then flown back to Lima from Tarapoto as it really is a long drive!

The path to the site from the top of the cable car is concrete and fine to walk on. Your best bet is to get a horse which will take you there for a small fee, that way the only walking you will do will be around the site itself. Horses go a different way to the footpath, I have only walked it and if I remember it was about 2 kilometres. It is not a steep path and is well made.

There is a cliff edge but it is very wide and grassy and there is no reason to get up close to it. Depends on the age of the children I guess.

Hello Ian, sorry for only coming back to you now, but I didn't get any notification from TripAdvisor and just read your message a minute ago ! From Lima to Kuelap you currently could come by bus (22 hours one-way) or flying into Chiclayo and taking a bus from there (10 hours one-way). Starting in October there are flights with LATAM airlines to Jaen, which is only 4 hours away from Chachapoyas. Once you are in Chachapoyas, you can do Kuelap in a day-trip excursion (it's about 3 hours by car one way). Happy travels, Martina

There is a minibus that goes to Kuelap from Chachapoyas, but only early in the morning or late afternoon, to cater to the workers. It is not particularly reliable, I'm told, so best to check when you are in Chacha. If you have hiked up to the ruins, your best bet for getting back is to ask one of the tour buses to give you a lift. Please note, though, that they may be full, and most (if not all) will have departed by 2.30pm. We found this out the hard way, but were able to get a security guard to order a (very dilapidated) taxi to take us to Chachapoyas. This was expensive, though: s/.150. This information should soon be redundant, however, with the opening of the cable car from Kuelap to Tingo Nuevo, scheduled for Aug/Sep 2016. From Tingo Nuevo there are lots of colectivos to Chachapoyas. I hope that helps.
