Bukit Keluang is a hill beside the sea. The silhouette can be seen from Perhentian Islands. Its seafront is a tall cliff, like a wall, with breathtaking view of the surrounding from the top of the hill. It was only around 10-15 min car ride to the south of Kuala Besut. The start of the hike was a fleet of stairs, and then it was soil trail all the way to the top. It was steep at the beginning of the hike and proper shoes were needed for the hike. There were ropes throughout this part of the trail to help the hike.
Halfway, the trail became less steep and undulating. At the viewpoint, there was handrails erected to block access to the edge of the cliff and a large wooden shade with many rows of wooden benches, suitable for resting but not for sightseeing, since the bush blocked the view over the edge of the cliff. A few steps further, the bush opened up for a rewarding seafront view of the surrounding coast. Care was needed when approaching the edge of the cliff, which was an almost vertical drop down to the coastline below.
There were some wildlife sighted such as squirrel, monitor lizard and colourful birds. Along the trail, especially around the top of the hill, there were several rubbish bin provided and no rubbish was seen strewn along the trail (I was here during a week day in the afternoon). The hike took around 30 min or more, and in my opinion, is one of the best short hikes in Malaysia. At the foothill, there was a toilet and a row of stalls selling foods and drinks. Bukit Keluang Beach was just within a short walking distance, where shades and huts with seats could be found.

Beautiful natural environment spoiled by Horrid development of the lowest type. Hundreds of low quality food stalls. Like being in a very poor dirty Mid East country.

Nice beach with pretty good waves. It was pretty empty and clean when we went there. The area gets a bit scary at night though.

My house is just 5 minutes from this beach. I have visited this beach on numerous occasions. This place is packed with people on Friday and Saturday as these two days are weekends of Terengganu instead of Saturday and Sunday like other states of Malaysia.
Beach is safe to swim but not during the monsoon. Monsoon starts from October until February every year. As it is a muslim country, it is not advisable to swim in bikini.
The main attractions of this beach is Keluang Hill. There are two trails to get up here. Basically it is just one trail but you can start from both end. The first one located near the stalls and the trails starts with stairs. The second starting/exit point is steeper but you can reach the top within 15 minutes (for fit person). It will take around 1 hour to finish from end to end.
The view from the top is beautiful as you can see Pulau Perhentian and also Pulau Rhu. You can also watch sunrise from here.
Parking is not a problem but you might find difficulties to find public transport. A lot of stall selling local food available at the foothill. Toilet is also available.
The hill is open for all as there are no guard/officer man the entrance. Try to get a local tour provide like Jenoba Outdoor to bring you up there so that you can get more knowledge about the hill. And will be safer too.

- This beautiful long sandy public beach is located about 6 km south of the town of Kuala Besut which is where travellers catch boats to the Perhentian Islands
- It is quite safe to swim here
- The beach is also a popular spot for family outings, picnics and enjoying sunsets
- The Bukit Keluang (Keluang Hill) is famous for its sunrise watching activity which it will take 20-25mins to hike
- Or you may ride a banana boat to nearby island; Pulau Rhu which you can enjoy snorkeling activities
- There are also a few caves that you may want to explore
- There is sufficient n free parking
- It may be crowded during weekend n public holidays
- There are quite a number of food stalls to buy food from
- However, the beach is not clean; there are trash everywhere like plastic bags
- Some facilities is not well maintained and need to upgrade
- A wooden walkway along the cliff edge is totally broken
- Poor toilet condition

How to reach Bukit Keluang by public transport? Does the K.T.-K. Besut bus pass nearby? How much does a taxi cost from K.Besut?
Rédigé le 25 août 2017
Hi, so sorry, we travelled there from KT by our own cars. You can check with the private and public taxis at KT Bus Station which is behind UTC in the Paya Bunga Complex Building. There will be buses however, their schedule may not be reliable. All the best. Try and be there to go up by 6.30 am latest to catch the glorious sunset at the peak. Only about 40 minutes or less of trekking uphill. Enjoy!
