Didn’t make it up to Aztec Butte due to strong winds on a cloudy day with scattered light showers. Opted for the granaries. That took us a while to find as we had not even read anything about this prior. We ended up seeing the sign and below it we found it. So fun to see how these long ago peoples set this up so it was hidden to outsiders. I imagine this would be super fun for kids. I had fun! For this I recommend.

My wife and I arrived to the trailhead around 1pm. We had the trail to ourselves. Our AllTrails app has the trail at 1.6 miles. An out and back, with a loop around the Aztec Butte. We hiked in the snow to the base of the Aztec butte and saw nothing but steep slick rock. We have good sticky hiking shoes, and were hiking with trekking poles, but we chose to bail on this part, then headed to the Granary instead. In the snow and ice that was more than challenging for us. There were parts that were a bit sketchy. It was fun to actually see the Granary. It was smaller than I had figured. But it ended up being a fun hike in the snow. I would like to do it again in dry conditions.

Our kids were determined to get Junior Ranger badges from all five national parks so we drove to the Island In the Sky visitor center while we were staying in Moab, about 30 minutes away. We did the Aztec Butte hike because my kids love climbing and I thought the granaries would be cool to see. The flat parts at the beginning (and end) got boring for my 5 yo (let's face it, 3/4 of the way into our trip now so no surprise) but he loved all the parts climbing up rocks. There are 2 branches of the hike--the main one to the Aztec Butte, and then a shorter branch to climb a smaller butte to see the granaries. Worth doing both. This is not a a super well marked trail, and on the rock parts you follow the cairns, so pay attention! But we really liked this hike and it wasn't crowded; we saw people only occasionally.

This was a great short hike. Take water, and a sun hat. It was a short 1.5-1.8 mile hike. We saw a lot of people and not everyone is aware of trail etiquette. It took us about 30min, we had a fairly quick pace. The views were pretty good. There are a few different lookout points. We went to the second lookout. There is parking and the trail is easy to find/follow. Bathroom a and covered/shaded picnic tables around.

This hike is fine until the last 50 feet up the butte, then very steep and dangerous. No place to put your hands and feet on the steep rock so you need to literally climb on your hands and knees to get up to the top. I was very surprised that the park recommends this as one of their top six. Nice views at the top, but I would never travel with children on this hike. We were two couples in our 60’s with two 20-year olds ahead of us who were equally surprised at the difficulty. Not for the feint of heart!

Those who couldn't find the graneries did not read the reviews here. Many people have explained where to find them. It is not obvious. The scramble across the rock face right near the top is not for the faint of heart. As a relatively fit 60 year old man, I did not find this hike to be too difficult. I some out of shape people turn around halfway. Also, as someone else said, don't do this trail with a baby! Probably not even a young child.

For those who want to get off the beaten path and get a sense of The awe of Canyonlands, this hike is perfect. At around 2-3 miles round trip, it is not too long,
And only a short duration from the Mesa Arch. There was only one other couple on the trail.
It is a moderate hike - some rock scrambles and inclines.
Views were amazing - the ancient granaries, and sights of the canyons on the top of the butte (very windy).
This hike should be on your list for Canyonlands

This was an excellent hike that ended up better than I expected. I would definitely recommend this hike if you are looking for a trail that can easily be done in a few hours, is easy to get to, yet provides a challenge with awesome panoramic views. We did the trail in the late morning and it was not crowded at all. The first half of the trail is mostly flat and straight forward. You'll come to a fork; make sure you follow the sign left to check out the granary before looping back to that point to go the other way to Aztec Butte. The climb up Aztec Butte is where the challenge begins. The distance is relatively short, but the incline and required scrambling is what makes it difficult but fun. Others that left the average/poor reviews were because they weren't prepared or bit off more than they could chew. Kids can probably handle it, if they are mature and well-supervised. All in all this trail is worth it, especially if you're short on time and want a challenge without the crowds.

What a wonderful hike to both the butte top and the granaries. It's easy and flat to the fork, and starts climbing across the rock thereafter. Exercise caution as it may be slippery going up the butte.

One of the nicer trails to enjoy and take in the views of Canyonlands. Not too long but offers a great perspective.
