As a previous reviewer said, off the beaten path, but worth it! Saw this as part of our tour. Quaint, 3 pew chapel, with rich history. See the ovens where slaves cooked. A beautiful chapel.

7th trip to Bermuda and first time here...beautiful and quaint chapel...dates back to 1600's...always get chills just placing my hand on buildings this old...feels like touching history...it's a bit off the road in Somerset...but my wife and I are glad we did stop there...even for a few minutes...they have a guest book and noticed 17 others had signed it that day...so not many make the trip...do it if you can...beautiful vistas from there as well.

Charming old building, gives one a taste of how like once was on the island. Set on a bluff overlooking the sea.

We stopped at this charming chapel while on Ricky's Island Tour. The building dates back to 1616 and was converted to a chapel in 1943. The views from the site are amazing!

This small chapel dates back to 1620 and is nestled in a lovely grove of trees in western Sandy's Parish. The chapel has views of Ely's turquoise harbor down below to the west and the Great Sound to the east. Built of now nearly extinct Bermudian cedar wood, the inside of the little chapel feels nearly alive with stories to tell about the early days of these islands. Across from the chapel on a hillside is an outdoor area with seats and a cross offering space for contemplation and serenity. The little building contains not only the chapel but also a tiny living space with an outdoor cistern for catching water for daily use.
The chapel still holds nondenominational services.
Morning services are held in the Chapel at 7 a.m. on weekdays.
Th chapel address is 16 Heydon Lane, off Somerset Road, Sandy's, Bermuda. Phone 441-234-1831. You can use nearby bus sttops # 7 or # 8.
This Chapel is a precious little gem and well worth th visit. Enjoy!

Heydon's Chapel is the oldest church in Bermuda. This is the smallest church in Bermuda built in 1620 This property was donated by Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Matthews, members of the Church of England. The gardener is the only person who draws pay from the trustees. Everyone else working or contributing to the maintenance of this wonderful park are doing it by voluntary services.
Inside the church you will see it was built with Bermudian Cedar. 99% of which was wiped out by the scale insects introduced during World War II.
By looking at the outside of the chapel you are able to really see how the rain water is collected and delivered to the cistern.

We took a taxi tour and got to stop at this hidden gem! It's a quick walk through, maybe five minutes tops but it was definatly a cool piece of Bermudian history to stop and see!

We visited on a bus tour. Beautiful and peaceful, off the beaten path. If you're interested in Bermudian culture and history, this is a must-see.

Of all the exciting, breathtaking, cultural places on this set of small islands known as Bermuda, this small church is the most memorable. It is deeply real. It is a working church so be respectful. You will need someone who knows how to find it. This building is remarkable even without being a Church. The construction is the blue print for housing construction for the whole of the Island. The cistern in the back collects water from it's roof as a model. The story is touching, and worth the reading plastered on the wall. For those who are religious, it is a moving, humbling visit. I said, take a couple of hours for this visit, that is because once you do fine it, you should take a little time to sit and be quiet, to enjoy this site. Trip Tip: Just as you leave through the little door, you will find to your left a small collections box. Use it.

We visited here with our extended family, two teenage boys and my parents. it is a short stop 10-15 minutes tops. When the islands of Bermuda were mapped out in the 1600's this was the only (first) stone structure! Watch your head going in! Because the roof is lower than most newer construction you are able to really see how the rain water is collected and delivered to the cistern. Stop by say a prayer and enjoy the commanding view!
