Whilst the village looked beautiful with a local vibe - we were hassled on two occasions just driving towards the beach. One person blocked our progress in the car (very slow driving) to then ask us to buy their trinkets & within a minute of that, another ran behind our car to ask 'what we wanted to do' We just took a couple of left turns and drove away - out of season experience so hopefully it was just due to tourism being slow that time of year. Sincerely hope others don't experience this level of pestering!

Do take the time to walk around the village and sample some food and drinks that you will find in all kinds of places. Especially try Tasty Bay just opposite the bus stop.Good prices, good food.
Do not swim from this beach. It needs a lot of cleaning up and improvement.
Very friendly people.

Worth a quick trip to get up and close to the huge cruise ships.
The local market very typical of the area and streets are busy but Canaries is the real St.Lucia

We stayed at an Airbnb here for a week. Walked into this small fishing village several times for food. Tasty Bay is your hub for information. Nash, the owner, will point you around and he even engaged a young boy (Ike) who served as our tour guide through the small town. Ate wonderful chicken and fries near the beach at a stall that Ike recommended. Authentic St Lucian experience unlike the resorts.
Also recommend having dinner at Claudia’s kitchen and coffee at Adeline’s art cafe. We stayed immediately adjacent to Claudia’s.

Visit to Pigeon Island and view of the Pitons from the Catamaran.
07/02/22
Had an excursion on a Catamaran from the harbour at St Lucia.
Visited Pigeon Island. Pigeon Island was so called because they had a lot of doves (turtle doves). The name giver thought they were pigeons. If named correctly they might have called it Dove island instead!
Had buffet lunch on the catamaran, salad, spicy rice with green peas, noodles both with tiny pieces of veg - they also had hot creole style sauce - a very hot sauce (A must taste for a tongue squirming experience- it's hot...hot..hot...). They call it Pepper sauce!! The bar served cold non alcoholic drinks and fruit juices.
Passed Marigold bay - one of the most beautiful bays in the Caribbean. The film The Blue Lagoon was shot here.
There is a beautiful greeny blue hue to the water near the beaches and crystal clear water.
It rained a little in the morning just a splattering and it was quite warm. It started clearing by 11am now at 12 it was sunny.
Passed a fishing village Anse La-raye
As the catamaran slices through the water it throws up sprays of water- a rainbow of colours glints as sunshine hits it. Stopped at Anse Thothon pronounced Ansthuson for half an hour for swim. No jumping off catamaran needed! Just an easy climb down into the crystal clear blue water on a metal step ladder.
At Anse Thuson there are greyee black sands on the beach and black streaks underwater from the volcanic activity in a distant past lava flow into the beach and waters beyond.
Our guide pointed out the fishing village of Canaries where she was born and added "Where everyone knows everyone. They know who is going out with who and who is cheating who."
Wow the Pitons - although they look close to each other, there is a distance of 3 miles between them. A breathtaking experience as it first comes into view and then hits you in the eyes with it's majestic presence. An uninterrupted view from sea, sipping hot tea and eating biscuits as the catamaran slows down for everyone to have an eyefull, mobiles busy taking snapshots and videos as the sea gently rocks the boat.
There was a volcanic eruption in Saint Lucia in 1766.
As we leave the area the sea is very choppy. It feels as if the catamaran is leapfrogging the waves. Everybody is whooping as if on a broncho ride. The breeze picks up at the same time....very exciting - everyone is smiling at each other.
Quick sit down before you fall down!
Some people got soaked by sprays of water flying into the catamaran.
Jaunty music "celebrate now and have a good time" blaring in the background adding to the feel good factor. People behaving like children on a sugar high. Mile wide smiles.- some dancing or trying to on a rocking deck others whooping each time the catamaran crashes down onto the waves and with the music "celebrate now, come on" - I think they played this song twice. Very good choice of music now playing mexican lacchi-sounds like - need to find out the words. Having a lot of fun and abdominal exercise as the catamaran acts like a bucking horse.
Saw houses perched precariously at 45 degree angles on hills facing the sea as we zoom past.
Sang happy birthday to someone called Jolene
One of the crew sang a rap song "shackala Lakalakla, boom boom, boom" Creole style happy birthday song!!!

Canaries is a small fishing village with a school, small shop, church, football pitch and a couple of bars.
This village has no tourist attractions and is a bit scruffy in the middle of the town. As a tourist you are simply irrelevant to the towns folk. Never the less the inhabitants are pleasant and courteous and didn't try to sell us anything which was a refreshing change.
One word of warning, we stayed for four weeks on the outskirts of Canaries from the middle of December. For the entire period up until the new year there were a lot of night time street parties with very loud rave type music playing until the small hours which we found wearing. After the new year things were much quieter.

Great little fishing village which has been geared up for tourism as there is a number of stall holders right by the beach unfortunately selling all the same things essentially, but the village itself gives you a real flavour of the islands culture.

Stopped here on an island tour . Very colourful homes line the streets of this village . Very photogenic area , although the residents didn’t seem to get any economic benefit from our visit.

Canaries is an 'atmospheric' small fishing village on the west coast of St. Lucia. We visited in the morning, the people were extremely friendly and happy.. There were several fishing boats around the beach, and frigate birds overhead looking for scraps of fish. Lovely place to stop off!
