I found the ruins very interesting along with the abandoned tractors. It is completely open for visits based on my experience, that is, you enter without paying or anything. It says right there that it was the first land grant to the British in the Caribbean. It is a sugar cane factory that is said to have been worked by slaves. There is a small cafe.

We absolutely loved this tour! Got 3 full beverages (two delicious cocktails and a liquor tasting), incredible historical knowledge, and just a beautiful day in St Kitts! Germain (our tour guide) told us all we ever needed to know about the history and distillery, and also about the local plants and area. It was really beautiful, adjacent to the rain forest (making a lovely breeze on a hot day). Germain was incredibly knowledgeable and makes a delicious cocktail. We highly recommend

Self-supporting rum distillery, owned by a Jefferson ancestor

Longer Review

We visited St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) for the first time in 2023, and had a great time.

Lynn of Lynn’s Taxi & Tours provided us an island tour, and we visited Wingfield Estate on the tour.

Jermain provided us a very nice tour. He shared that Wingfield was established by grant to Christopher Jefferson, Thomas’ great-grandfather.

The Estate is self-sustaining… grow sugar cane in hill above the water wheel; water flowed from uphill, through the aqueduct to the water wheel, which ground the sugar cane to make sugar and molasses and separate it from the rest of the cane; they would then burn waste materials to make heat to distill and create the rum, which they bottled there.

This was not a year-round process, but a seasonal one.

Old Road Rum is the name of the rum they make there today. Texas was our host for a tasting and what she told us was true… the first sip did burn on the way down, and the second sip was quite smooth and tasty.

Thank you, Jermain and Texas for hosting our visit, and to Lynn for taking us here!

Loved this place, so amazing to see. Our guide shared that a part of the distillery was discovered a few years ago. Amazing!

The Wingfield Estate is a former sugar plantation founded in 1625. On the grounds are the picturesque ruins of the sugar and rum production. This includes the lime kiln, St Kitts’ tallest stone chimney (step inside for a cool view), and an aqueduct that powered the mill.

There is also an excavation of one of the earliest rum stills in the New World where it is reported that Thomas Jefferson’s great, great, great grandfather sipped from.

Wingfield is also the home of Old Road Rum . For a small fee, you will be given a detailed tour and tasting of this imported rum made for them. For those that wish to learn and appreciate rum, take the one-hour “sommelier style” class for $50.

Our group of eight did the tour and tasting at the Wingfield Estate Plantation and Ruins. We throughly enjoyed every aspect of the afternoon. Our tour guide, Bon Jovi, and the bartender Quan were both not only extremely knowledgeable, but also extremely personable. They made a our day a complete delight.

Took a large group of Denturists to visit and we were very impressed with the ongoing restoration of the rum distillery ruins. We were fortunate enough to have the tour narrated by the owner himself. Mr Widdowson has an extensive knowledge of the history of St Kitts and presents it in an entertaining way. A must see!

I had very low expectations for this place based on reviews here... but this was probably our highlight of the day!

Not only is this place adjacent to Romney Manor/Caribelle Batik, and you can visit all three in one shot in this area of St Kitts, but also there is a "new" rum in town called Old Road Rum and the tasting/sampling tour is done right here at the ruins that are now refreshed and ready for visitors! We have visited on a day where there was no cruise ship in town so we had it all for ourselves :)

The regular bottle of rum is $69 but it's an excellent rum - not only do I enjoy rum but also collect it so it was quite a treat to tame home a bottle from the very first batch #1 :) excellent rum, very cool sampling vessels - elegant, classy and tasty!

TIP: not sure if you need to schedule in advance as we showed up unaware of the rum tour availability at this place - we expected just ruin leftover and that

TIP: there is a separate path way that leads you through small mini jungle via main route to this place from Romney Manor - no need to repark there car, it's an easy marked route - when a friendly associate told us someone complained once they got lost on the way we laughed as it's impossible!

Wonderful tour with lots of history and beautiful grounds. It was interesting to learn the history of the sugar mil and Rum distillery and see the excavation still in process. This was a welcome stop on our visit to St Kitts.

Pleasant stop as part of our day excursion. Green & verdant gardens with plenty of places to sit and take in the surroundings.

Didn't get a tour, just a few words from our driver about the great oak you could get married under.

Nice stop, rum punch was a little weak, more like a rum tickle!
