The museum is well organized and displays provide great detail about the island’s history. Hamilton’s birthplace home was especially interesting for our group. Our hesitation to give any more stars to our review is due to lack of interest by the young man at the front desk who could not be bothered to help or direct us. It was two of us who were visiting the museum. We paid our $10/ea entry fee and asked for guidance. He literally stated our group was too small to give a tour. Nobody else was in the small museum. No one else needed attention in the museum. Then he returned all his attention to his phone and to his desktop to surf the web. Wow! Such a shame. This museum and island history has much to offer…..with the exception of personal interaction according to this young man. And the gift shop…… same thing different building. The young woman never raised her face from her phone. No greeting….no “how can I help you?” A disservice to the museum by their employees. “It would be nice…it would be nice to have customer service on your side….”

Thank you for visiting our museums, and thank you for taking the time to review them – we appreciate the positive feedback on our exhibitions. We're very sorry that you were dissatisfied with your customer service experience. Our small museums are self-guided, and it is our understanding that the Gallery supervisor did actually have other guests in the gallery at the time, and as such was unable to give you and your friend more personal attention. He is also in charge of membership services and tour bookings, and is therefore required to focus his attention on calls, emails and our online reservation system (not surfing the web). We have looked into your concerns and we can assure you and all our guests that despite our very small staff, we strive to maintain our customer service at the highest levels. On the day in question, we were particularly short staffed, one of our 3 gallery attendants having had the day off for her wedding. We also wish to remind our museum visitors that we are a small, non-profit organisation and the US$10 entry fee goes not only to support the running of our two museums, but also towards the development of a new Museum of Nevis Maritime History, the running of the Nevis Island Archives, as well as a number of projects and activities aimed at safeguarding the island's natural and culture heritage. We wish a pleasant remainder of your stay in Nevis.

This is, as others have noted, a small but interesting museum. The museum occupies the first floor of this Georgian-style building; the island’s House of Assembly occupies the upper floor, closed to the public. But the place is special — and well worth a visit — because it is the site of Alexander Hamilton’s birth. As an admirer of Hamilton and his role in the founding of the United States, I appreciated the chance to see this humble place where his life began. It should be part of any American’s visit to Nevis. There is a very nice Gift Shop on the grounds.

If you are a history buff, especially an Alexander Hamilton fan, this is a must. The museum is quaint but informative.

The museum is small but has several interesting things on display. The section on slavery is good. They have leg irons and other shackles that you pick up to really get a feel for their weight.

A large display gives a chronological overview of milestones in Nevis' history as well as globally. A set of simple, succinct displays cover the slave trade, abolition, and later colonial history. There's a section on crops, particularly sugarcane, that used to be the economic backbone of this island. There's also some more contemporary information about life on this island.

If you have a chance to go to the National Museum in Basseterre you will find much of the same ground covered, but in greater detail.

On a recent visit to Nevis, I was excited to see the new exhibition at the History Museum. It's professionally curated and easy to follow, with really interesting information that teaches visitors about the island's history from pre-Colombian times up to contemporary Nevis culture. It's obviously a small museum, run by a non-profit society, but they have done an amazing job and even use new technologies (Augmented Reality and QR codes) which our kids found really fun! And don't worry: there is free WiFi to download the apps for AR and QR codes! Next door is Hamilton House and the new Museum Gift shop that has some great and original items. There's also a great little Café in the yard for light meals and drinks after your visit – so this place is a wonderful way to spend an hour or so. The museum is definitely a MUST-DO for any visitor to Nevis – it's a great introduction to the overall history before you start your tour of the rest of the Island!

Coming out of the ferry terminal and walking along the coast to the left, one will soon come upen a sign, where it says: 'Alexander Hamilton Birthplace - Museum of Nevis History', referring to two buildings just behind. One of them is an elongated stone construction, from the typical reddish volcanic rock of the island, while the other house is made from wood.

At the ground floor of the stone house is the History Museum proper and there foreigners have to pay USD 5, which is valid for both buildings. Photography is not allowed anywhere inside. The lady-cashier gave me some general information and then I went to have a look at the one room exhibition of the museum, where there is not much to see, but where there are some very detailed information boards to read.

The upper part of the stone building is closed and reserved for meetings of the Nevis Island Assembly. Just opposite is an apparently reconstructed wooden house in the style of Alexander Hamilton days, who is supposed to have been born just here. This part of the museum is solely dedicated to the life of the 10 US Dollar-bill man, but with not much more than drawings and short comments. On the premises of the site, by the road, is also a café.
