Grand Turk is such a great island for vacation. Different from visiting European cities, we came here for relaxation and for fun. We could drive around the whole island for couple hours but I was here for three times with different cruise lines. First, I spent half day on a beach. On the second visit, I joined an excursion with tram. The third time, I took a taxi (van) going to the Cockburn Town for photos and videos.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video has to be worth at least 1.8 million words. So, take a look the video on my utube channel. Just search 逆難疫旅 HowFarGo

Having traveled to most regions of the world and in the last ten years travelling six to eight months a year We decided to spend six nights 0n gran Turk and it has to noted that the island is absolutely filthy with rubbish strew everywhere add to that ,that prices as per all of Turks and Caicos are exorbitantly high and the islanders are only slightly less rude than those on provincialis, plus the beaches are very average by Caribbean standards and yet again rubbish is strewn everywhere . In short a thoroughly awful island and we can’t wait to leave tomorrow morning .

La Capital de las islas es pequeña, tiene no más de 3 mil habitantes, y muy pocos comercios o cosas para hacer. Se puede alquilar un carrito de golf y recorrer la misma pero no mucho más.

We took our first trip to Grand Turks. The island is beautiful. The water is clear and the beaches are so pretty. We had visits from some of the islands wild donkeys and dogs who liked to hang out on the beach. The only downside to staying at Grand Turks is meals are expensive and credit cards are not accepted at very many locations. There are also some smelly areas where the air is not pleasant due to standing water. This is the perfect location if you want to relax. Bring bug spray, plenty of cash. When the cruise ships are not in port not everything is open. A great place to relax and get away.

. . . but it is here...….

I did not feel very safe, but we did park our transportation device (a golf cart) and took all our stuff and took some photo's.

It's dilapidated and hurricane struck....

There were no shore excursions which interested us on this cruise, so hired a car to explore the island instead. After at least two huricanes recently, the infrastructure except for the government buildings and a few resorts were in good shape. The roads are in extremely bad shape except for that to the College and lighthouse. We did not go off the semi-paved roads onto the crushed coral and semi-sand covered roads in case the tires of the car (only with Japanese GPS and not able to be changed) suffered a problem. We drove up to the lighthouse, somewhat rusty with apparently a good view, a nice garden and gift shop, admission was charged at the gate and may who were on an organized excursion were dismayed at this. The college appeared to be in good shape; lots of donkeys around. Some nice views of the sea but on the whole a very poor island. Cruise port was much the same as others, lots of shops and cafes.

When you walk the streets of Cockburn Town in the morning you will be greeted by anyone and everyone. From one end to the other it is chock full of history, Unfortunately the hurricanes have wreaked havoc on many of the buildings in recent years and rebuilding is a slow process. It's all part of their history and these people seem to take it in stride. If you walk in the evening, after sunset, you would be advised to bring a flashlight as street illumination is little and far between. A very safe place to visit.

Before visiting Grand Turk I didn't know what to expect of Cockburn Town. I had images of vibrant and chaotic Caribbean capitals like St. John's in Antigua or St. George's in Grenada in my head. Well, forget those - GT is very small, sleepy and laid-back. It is the capital of the Turks and Caicos, but you won't really notice it. It is easy to walk by government buildings without realizing it. I personally liked Cockburn Town very much.
There were three things that especially stood out for me:
- Beautiful colonial architecture: It was nice to look at, even though not everything was yet restored after the storms. I especially liked that all historical buildings (also private houses) have a sign in front of them explaining the history of the house.
- Beautiful beaches along the road on the west coast, I enjoyed great walks there.
- The salinas: All over the island, also in Cockburn Town you will find salinas, which have been restored after the salt industry's decline. The salt industry used to define the island for centuries (including centuries of slave labor), so seeing the salinas was something very authentic for me. They don't always smell good, but you can often see beautiful birds there.
You can just take a leisurely stroll in Cockburn Town to enjoy all it has to offer, also a couple of nice beachfront restaurants. If you would like to understand the history of the island and of all the Turks and Caicos, I recommend visiting the museum. It is small, but very informative and well worth the 5 dollars entrance fee.

We arrived with HAL. We arranged before hand to rented a car from Nathan's so we could see the island at your own pace. There is not a ton to see on the island but we had a fabulous day. We spent sometime walking around Cockburn Town there wasn't a ton open. Lots of buildings with no roofs. lots of damage for the fall hurricanes. There was a few little shops, St. Thomas Church, restaurants and bars. Lots of beautiful beaches and donkeys. The relics Friendship Space Capsule is not that interesting. we slowed down for a picture but that was about it. The lighthouse was worth seeing as well as driving to the oppisite side of the north end(North Creek). Lots of stunning beaches, lots of car wrecks which actually look pretty cool to see and photograph. We barely saw anyone up that way. The shipwreck at governor beach was pretty incredible as well. We did come over a few roads that are still partly flooded. The few locals we meet along the way which were really friendly but did not see a lot of locals or tourists.

Made our way up to town from the cruise terminal. It's a bit too far to walk, about 3 km but a taxi is just $5 per person. We wandered a bit. Lots of cafes and bars. Didn't come across a lot of ships. Grand Turk has other things to offer.
