Visiting the ruins of a 1700's plantations was eye-opening. It is just tragic how slaves were treated during this time. I guess it was a good thing that cotton was not a profitable crop here in Turks and Caicos, and the plantation owner did not prosper. The land owner (Stubbs) owned the land for as far as you could see, and 7,000 slaves once worked the land.
While the tour was only approximately half an hour, it gave an unsettling perspective on Turks and Caicos life in the 1700's. We are really glad that we took the time to visit the Cheshire Plantation ruins.

Old buildings, history, plantings, foundations, and cool artifacts from the 1700s. Interesting. This is a quick walking tour. Not ADA. Wear sturdy shoes. Paths are not paved.

The ruin itself is not very large but has the potential to be interesting to walk around. Our guide, however, rushed us through the tour and repeated a memorized speal about the plantation’s history with clearly no real interest or in depth knowledge on anything relevant to the subject. We asked a number of questions and she didn’t know the answers to any of them and didn’t even know when the plantation was originally built. She claimed that no one knew the answers to a lot of our questions but it seemed to me like she just was brand new and didn’t care enough to do much research. It definitely felt like we paid too much for a 15 minute rushed tour with a pretty uninformed teenage guide.

Small, unkempt ruins. No real cultural significance, or if there is, the guide either didn't know or care to share with our group. But whatever you do, don't ask him a question. Got more information from Wikipedia.

A large disappointment. Not really much here. Not well maintained. Got a 15 minute tour by an indifferent tour guide with limited knowledge of the property. We were the only visitors during our visit. Crafts for sale are woefully overpriced.

History should not be forgotten. The area is beautiful. The professor was engaging. The history is horrific. Much of the wealth of Europe was built on misery.

This is a former slave plantation on the island, and it is largely in ruins. So, you're seeing some stone foundations of where this building or that building used to be. It is tough to put it in context. Walking the whole site takes maybe 10 minutes, so this isn't much of a "destination stop." I felt like it was an important visit in order to put into perspective how this place came to be and the outrageousness of slavery. However, it doesn't quite exude those vibes of a revered place, or a place of introspection. It is more like a quick stop at a dilapidated construction site or something like that.
The guide on site, Ashleigh, spoke really softly and was tough to follow. She walked ahead of our group and started explaining spots at her own speed, so only the three people next to her could hear, and the rest who were walking toward her down the narrow path either had no idea what she was saying, or had to reask once we got to where she was standing. Again-- while i was hoping the stop conveyed to my kids thoughts of respect and contemplation, it wasn't quite set up for that type of message or impact.

Nothing special. We stopped here as part of our buggy tour. We have been a to Turks plenty of times and didn’t know this existed. The tour guide was very knowledgeable but there really isn’t much left to see. The entire walk through the plantation took about 15 minutes.

The plantation or what is left of it is small and the buildings in ruins. But if you like history this is a short, instructive tour, worth to take. The place is interesting. And the guide, a nice lady with a lot of knowledge and easy verb, will describe every aspect of the place and its history. Wear comfortable shoes and a bottle of water, because even though the place is not large, the pathway is rocky and uneven, and the weather usually hot. There is also a small hut selling local hand made crafts.

The guide there was really great in telling us about all the history there, as well as pointing our different plants on the property and their uses. Very interesting to learn about the site.
