All I can is if you have a chance to go there, do it! I’ve been to beautiful beaches in Thailand and snorkeling there. This place is so unique that was not like I went snorkeling in Thailand. Lots of fish you will see without scuba diving.

Great fun if you are a snorkeler. We are very new and it was a bit rough for us, but we had a great time once we got to the beach part (Second half of the trip). First half is on the reef trail, in about 9 feet of water. It was a little choppy, and we were not prepared or maybe "comfortable" snorkeling at that point - with the life vest around us, it made it extra uncomfortable and awkward for me, personally, and my partner panicked and wasn't able to float properly, so we didn't want to slow down the group. We really should not have tried so soon (It was seriously only our second time snorkeling) - It was something we should have saved for the end of our trip, since I could probably snorkel home to Florida now! We watched the others and learned from their technique and the men on the boat were VERY patient. They were very willing to do what it took to take us along, since our group was small. Excellent experience overall, as we learned a lot. At the beach, we snorkeled quite a bit and saw tons of fish and rays, and rumors of a lemon shark, but we didn't see him. No turtles!

Buck Island itself has beautiful turquoise water and a nice stretch of beach. But the coral for the most part has died, so it looked like a large brown underwater (10ft or so down) graveyard with very little fishes or sea life. I did a full day tour and it was very uneventful other than going across the channel was very nice. No lunch was provided, soft drinks and rum punch (of sorts) on way back. But was definitely disappointed in the small section of reef people were allowed to see. The island itself is small but you can take a trail to top for a view.

Captain Ally and her crew(Morgan and Cece) were first class from push off. We were never rushed and the snorkeling produced turtles, a cuda, stingrays and more fish than we could count. I don’t want anyone else to find out about St Croix. Don’t go!

The Best Day trip Ever on the “Renegade”, Full day with a friend to Buck Island, which has a World-class White Beach with Chrystal Clear Turquoise Waters and Great Snorkeling ! Followed by a short sail trip to another beach for a rustic lunch, “Pirates Atmosphere” with “Rum-Punch” under an old Sail for shade.
Great Crew, very attentive, helpful, proactive and Safety Conscious!
Thank you Bigbeards!

I went on a reef tour. The underground tour took you through dead and dying reef with a total of 15 visible fish (there might have been some too small to see). The water is very clear, so my grandsons thought it was cool to see even one fish swimming around. We went on a motorized tour boat out there which has two advantages: less seasickness and it moves fast enough so that the stultifying humidity is less annoying.

Beautiful island with an amazing beach. Gets very busy with local tour boats. But, still worth it. No bars or restaurants so bring a picnic with food and drinks. Beautiful sand and water. Highly recommend.

Sailboat ride and snorkel with Captain Carl!
We had a group of 18. It was recommended when you snorkel to get off first due to fish being scared away.

This reef had plenty of fish, lobsters, small shark a turtle to see along a trail.
Definitely worth the time. Water crystal clear and not very deep.

We visited as part of an excursion with Big Beard and really enjoyed the day. You can only explore a little. We anchored and practiced snorkeling off the island for 45 min prior to visiting the reef and snorkeling there just off Buck Island.

If you have been fortunate enough to snorkel or dive a healthy reef system like in Roatan or Cozumel, you will be extremely disappointed with a tour of the Buck Island reef system. Don't get me wrong, the BEACH at the island is beautiful, with the softest and whitest sand, BUT the reef is 90% dead or dying. It was devastating to see. Even tho it is a "protected" area, it has not been protected at all. JFK would be rolling over in his grave. If you have never snorkeled before, you may enjoy it because there are SOME fish to see. However, if you have seen healthy reef systems and know what they are supposed to look like, you will be VERY disappointed in what is going on at Buck Island. On the other hand, the coral formations at Frederikstad Pier are extremely healthy. We saw several turtles up close and spotted eagle ray gliding by. Well worth that adventure!
