My last visit to Waterlemon Cay was among my favorites, but we had some challenges on this visit. Perhaps it was just a bad day because seem boast the treasures I once found there. We saw wonderful, wonderful blues and had an amazing snorkel, but at the end of the day, we didn't see any sharks or anything that was more beautiful than other places around the island. That said it topped off a great visit to the Annaberg Ruins. I can't complain about a beach in St. John; this just wasn't our visit. Following several rays around for an extended time and saw vibrant fishes. There is evidence of hurricane damage.

Little bit of a trek to get to but highly recommended. Follow signs to the Annaberg sugar plantation. There is a small parking lot in the spots in total, so getting there earlybis recommended. We got there around 9am on a Friday and theot was about half filled. We left a littler after 11 and it was full. There are also a few addl spots along the road. Walk out of the parking lot and head right and walk along the water. Recommend a sturdy shoe. Don't need hiking shoes per se but flip flips may make it a bit challenging.

It's a little over a half a mile or so until the west end of the beach. Continue along to the far end and then turn right qroubd the corner and find a place to set your stuff down. It's all rocks, no sand. It's a bit of a challenge to get into the water because of the rocks but it's well worth it. We headed to right and went all the way around. We head very little issues with waved and currents but there supposedly sometime issues which you need to be aware of. Coral was beautiful, plenty of fish. Highlights included turtles, a few squid, a spotted eel and 3 baby nurse sharks...maybe 3 feet long...was super cool.

Hiked the Leinster Trail to get here. Best snorkeling of the whole trip! We saw a shark, lots of giant starfish, so many fish, turtles, rays, and corals. Husband hiked around the bend to fly-fish on a deserted beach. Beautiful views.

Fantastic snorkel! Parked at Annaberg and hiked about 25 mins on a flat, gravel path. Had flip flops on and was fine. In my brought out snorkel gear as it’s very rocky shore not for lounging. Walk all the way around the cove until you are at the shore closest to the island. Very rocky entry with lots of urchins. Put flippers on before going into the water. 2 adults and our 11 year old snorkeled out to the island and swam counterclockwise as per the reviews. Saw turtles, rays, huge puffer fish, barracuda, and a large nurse shark along with plenty of fish. The swim back around was a little bit of a swim against the current but we could have let it push us toward shore and then walk back along the shore versus fighting it back to where we entered. All and all a great spot for us. I’d say it’s for moderately experienced snorkelers as you do have to swim out a ways and then swim around the island and the back side had some waves. Nothing crazy but not for a beginner.

Parked at Annaberg at 9am and walked about a mile around the bay on rocky shore to the rocky tip, dumped our backpacks and snorkeled way out and circled the whole island clockwise. Amazing!!! So much beautiful coral and fish! Amazing clarity. Saw stingray, barracuda, turtle, etc. AMAZING spot that didn’t disappoint!

Go early! We were the 2nd people there and by the time we left it was getting “busy”. Saw several goats on the trail.

What was our other favorite spot? Salt Pond bay! That’s for another review…

Really wonderful snorkeling around the cay. Consider starting up by Leinster Point by taking the beach trail and allow the current to bring you back towards the parking area. Less fighting the current and allows you to drift some vs swimming the entire time.

After reading many reviews, I felt I knew what to expect: challenging swim, some nice fish and coral, but not like it used to be. Well, as a first timer here, I was blown away! Yes, the swim was a challenge, but I saw a couple in their mid-late '70's do it, so I knew I could too. There were three of us in our group and I'm glad there were; it just gave me a sense of security. We snorkeled counter-clockwise which is what was recommended. The water was fairly rough going across, but not too scary. The first thing I noticed was the variety of coral - so beautiful! And huge parrot-fish! I felt like I was swimming in my own giant aquarium! We saw 2 nurse sharks, 2 barracudas, and many more interesting fist I still need to look up. And the biggest starfish I've ever seen. I've snorkeled various places in the Carribean and Hawaii and this was by far the best day ever! Don't hesitate, just do it!

Title says it all - you'll need to walk a mile from the parking lot to the beach across from the cay, but you'll find some of the best snorkeling here.

The snorkeling was not worth the long walk to get there. The beach was very rocky making it difficult to get into the water. It was a long swim to the cay and very little fish to see.

The 20-minute hike to get there was pleasant. Very difficult to get into the water from the rocks nearest the Cay, and there was little to see underwater besides bleached coral. Did get a glimpse of a nurse shark, which was nice, and going into the water a second time off the beach saw a couple of turtles. It was definitely the best snorkeling we found on the island, but the best in this case is unfortunately not good.
