Guadalajara is Mexico’s second-largest city, and it is famous for Tequila and Mariachi music. I could not get enough of this beautiful music, checking each restaurant as I strode past, trying to gather where the Mariachi sounds are being played. On my first day in Guadalajara, I purchased an inexpensive bus pass and got to know the city layout. Once I started making a few trips around town, I got to know the exciting places to visit and started travelling just as the locals do.
This is one of the most popular cities in Mexico, and foreign tourist rarely visits it. It may be because of the Narco crime or other personal reasons.
Guadalajara is one of the oldest colonial cities in Mexico, and the history and architecture of this great city are unsurpassed. I discovered from the tour commentary that the cathedral of Mexico is the largest dating back to the 16th century with its neogothic style. I also learned that the most prominent murals by Jose Clemente Orozco which can be viewed in almost any museum, and he was also the most sought-after muralist of the 20th century, and as famous as Frida Diego.
The city is spotlessly clean, and the tourism office is well catered for foreign tourists, and the bus pass is a steal, and it will keep going until late.

A large and interesting sculpture. You can’t miss it on the plaza and you can use it to guide your way through the district.

Many have written about Guadalajara and its many breathtaking colonial buildings dating back hundreds of years; famous murals; cultural events at the historic zocala each evening; warm & welcoming people; and exquisite dining venues and cuisine. All that is true. What many do not know is that there's also an exceptional man of integrity in Guadalajara, a guide with whom one must meet. His name is Jose Orozco.
Mr. Orozco will greet you upon arrival in the airport with a sign with your name and take you to your hotel. If being with an unassuming, kind, thoughtful, gentleman, ensuring your precious time is best spent in Guadalajara, email Mr. Orozco to book him before going. Knowing the city like the back of his hand because he grew up there, Mr. Orozco ensured my husband and I saw the best of the best when shopping. His English is impeccable and he's an attentive interpreter, among other qualities he offers visitors.
Having been in the export business for years, Orozco can even help you ship your purchased treasures back home. That plus trustworthy supervision while shopping are critical when buying handmade furniture and pottery.
For example, I wanted a set of 8 Mexican traditional indigenous chairs, the type made of leather, oak and bentwood. I had no idea where to find them, where to find the best quality, how to get them to a shipping company... No problem with Mr. Orozco. He drove us to an area of town we'd never have found on our own, straight to a small, unassuming manufacturing shop specializing in the exact chair I wanted. In fact, the shop's been in existence four generations. Several men and women were busy there, one working on the tanning process in a small courtyard, others assembling a chair. It was a huge treat after selecting the exact type chair I wanted, to sit with the owner afterward and listen to him explain how the craft had been passed down through his family. Perhaps the biggest thrill was on the way out. First, he introduced us to his mother, a very small woman appearing to be in her 90's, dressed in black, with a warm loving smile and eyes that spoke a universal language of compassion. She said something to me in Spanish that I couldn't understand, but it didn't matter. She'd expressed her love without words. Meandering through a couple of other areas, near the garage door entrance to make our exit, we were also introduced to the chair-maker's father, in wheelchair as warm and kind as everyone else there. After shaking hands, another surprise: the owner introduced us to his brother, the man working on a chair I'd first noticed upon entering the shop. We shook hands, said our goodbyes, and knew we'd experienced far more than many tourists and buyers in Guadalajara.
Yes, I got a great deal on the chairs I've long awaited. I also got photos of the 4th generation craftsman to boot. No monetary value, however, could be placed on what we experienced during that hour. It would have been impossible without Mr. Orozco. And that was only an hour of six we spent with him today. More to follow, but if you want to really make the most of your Guadalajara experience, start by booking Mr. Orozco. His email address is usamex99@prodigy.net.mx
