Visited Injalak Arts at Gunbalanya recently on our way to Mount Borradaile in Arnhem Land.
Our friends and we were able to purchase genuine paintings and designed fabrics as well as speaking to the artists responsible for the works.
Much better than shopping in Darwin for this type of indigenous work.

A good spot to stop and witness quality indigenous art work. A real flavour of Kakadu it’s a must visit when heading to Cahills Crossing or Kakadu.

An unplanned visit by our Outback Spirit tour group afforded us the opportunity to meet local artists, learn about their techniques and purchase some exceptional quality artwork.
I was fortunate to secure a bark painting entitled 'Burarr' (Water Goanna) by a young 'up and coming' artist, Sprotin Bangarr. Sprotin's talent is clearly evident in the detail and composition of the work.
Shipping artwork from Arnhem Land was not a problem. All works were very carefully wrapped and all arrived undamaged.
Framed, Sprotin's work now takes pride of place on our lounge room wall - a great memory and I'd suggest an added bonus, a good investment.
Highly recommend.

We were pleased to have the opportunity to watch and ask questions as the women prepared pandanus for weaving. We also spoke to some young men inside the small workshop/studio about their screen printing. The items for sale were varied and beautifully made.

We visited the Injalak Arts Centre as part of a day tour to Arnhem Land - it was a privilege to have our cultural guide lead us to ancient rock art in the surrounding hills, and share his stories....then we had time to enjoy watching the artists at work and look through the amazing amount of work on offer. The Injalak Arts centre is a wonderful platform to showcase the local artists work and we found all the items for sale were very reasonably priced. I purchased a framed piece which was shipped to me in Sydney, very efficient and extremely well packaged. All The staff were great!

On a recent trip through Arnhemland and Kakadu we were fortunate enough to visit the Injalak Arts centre in Gunbalanya. We were travelling with a Lord's Safaris tour and were impressed with the Arts Centre and being able to interact with the artists who were happy to explain all about how they paint and the lady weave baskets.
Our guide Dean had a great relationship with the local artists which he has obviously built up during his many trips to the area.
One downside was the prices put on the artwork, both our party and other tourists we met were all put off buying by the prices which we saw advertised as wholesale!
We heard a rumour that new management were hell bent on making as much profit as possible at the expense of having a greater number of sales at a lesser price.
The prices were certainly on par with what we saw for sale in Darwin with no obvious advantage of making the long trip out to Gunbalanya.
We also wondered if needing permits to visit Arnhemland stops an even greater number of tourists from visiting the centre.

We were part of a day tour to Gunbalanya in May 2019 and were taken on a guided walk around Injalak Hill by Gabby.

The scenery was magnificent, but the real highlight for us was our guide Gabby. She did a wonderful job of showing us the spectacular country and sharing the stories of her ancestors and the land.

Having spent some time in the Kimberley prior to visiting Injalak, it really opened our eyes to the rich and varied history of the traditional owners across the top end. It was an honour for us to hear the stories, experience the wonderful rock art and to visit such a magnificent part of Australia.

I bought a hand dyed, artist produced shirt, and a printed silk cushion cover as Xmas presents. Unique items that represent the natural world, and part of the indigenous culture. Items came in the mail, in no time at all. I live in Darwin, but I’m sure postage to other parts of Australia and overseas would be dealt with with equal promptness.

We visited as part of an Arnhem Land tour and were not disappointed. Fantastic to see the artists at work and chat with them about their work, have them explain the techniques to us, and to see the extremely high quality art they produce. It would have been easy to buy a lot of the art from the shop! Wonderful to see local artists supported in such a great way, and to be able to purchase genuine Aboriginal art and know that the artists are getting their fair share and not being ripped off - great to be able to go almost directly to the source. I look forward to displaying my purchase once we return home.

Injalak Arts is an Aboriginal owned and governed non-profit association located in Gunbalanya, formerly known as Oenpelli, situated in West Arnhem Land east of the famous Kakadu National Park. Many places in the Australian Northern Territory display, show and sell Aboriginal art. But here you can also meet Aboriginal artists, watch them do their work, and speak with them. A really unique experience!

On any given day many of our members - painters, basket weavers, fabric screenprinters and designers - work at and visit our art centre so the chances of interacting with artists is very high! Lots of their family visit too. Our members love their art centre and are active six days a week all year round. In dry season we are accessible so it's great you were able to visit and have a really good experience. Thank you
