The Avantiswami Temple, located in Avantipora is a historic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It was built by King Avantivarman in the 9th century during the rule of the Utpala dynasty. The temple is renowned for its impressive architecture, featuring intricate carvings and sculptures, typical of the Kashmiri style. Despite being partially damaged over the centuries, it still retains its grandeur and is considered a significant archaeological and cultural site.

On the way to Pahalgam, this is a must visit if you want to explore Kashmir beyond the touristy traps.

Are they allowing people from jammu? Because we took a cab from jammu, we wanted to go there, but our driver said, they'll allow only the vehicles from srinagar/kashmir. Some mishap happened, some CRPF ppl is not letting outsiders. Is this true?
So we are unable to go.

Interesting place... These are ruins, but kept well now.
Read the history of its times... Will add meaning to the visit.
By the way, for history buffs, I strongly recommend to research into other such places in and around Srinagar/Kashmir. Martand Surya Temple, Sugandesha temple, Sankargaurisvara temple... the Buddhist sites, Burzahom archaeological site.... and many many more.
In short, study the history and culture of Kashmir before you go...Kashmir is much much more than its beauty!

Awantipore temple ruins are on the way from srinagar to pahalgam. This is an ancient temple of Lord Vishnu which was destroyed due to natural calamity. There is no worship carried out in the temple currently as the main idol and inner sanctum was destroyed by Islamic invaders. The remains of the temple are beautiful enough to tell what the structure would have been at it's peak. Must visit.

A temple ruin of what may have been splendid Ancient Indian architecture. They charge an entry fee to this place, and a guide takes you through a small walkthrough, describing some of the sculptures on the pillars, and briefly describing the temple's history.
They claim the temple came to ruins due to an earthquake.
Overall, a beautiful temple ruin set on the backdrop of mountains. A good place for religious Hindu families to hangout & take the vibes of the place.

Can be accessed by travelling shared by cabs till Awantipora. Or book a cab. From the road its a short walk to the main complex. The Place is being restored by Archaeological Survey of India. The main Temple has four entrances and one must observe the intriguing idols carved into the stones and different patterns on different walls

In between Srinagar and Pehalgham comes a Vishnu Temple built in the 9th century by King Avanti Varman. The temple hosting 5 gods is also known as Pandava Lari or the house if Pandavas. Later destroyed in the 14th century by Sultan Butshikan.

There is a small fee for adults and children to see this protected monument and local guides are available.

Show this to your family and children, explain the brilliant architecture we once had and how temples were destroyed in thousands. The need to reclaim these temples will be realised.
