We are members of English heritage so decided to visit, not sure if we would have otherwise? Parking is £3 for the whole day but if your park in Lulworth estate for the day you can use the same parking ticket here!

We got round the castle in about an hour, reminded me of a mini downtown Abbey. Nice to learn the history of the place and how it had evolved.

You can also walk around the church, chapel, gardens and normally the peacock place but that was closed when we were there. The giant staircase in the tower is nice to see over the castle.

Highly recommend the cream tea! And we also made good use of the free lawn games. Friendly, helpful staff , thank you!

Thank you for visiting and leaving us a review, it sounds like you had a great time. We are rethatching the barn near the peafowl enclosure so for the safety of our visitors we have closed the access whilst the works are finished. It should be open again soon.

Turned out to be a good choice of somewhere to visit on a wet Bank Holiday Sunday! Good value and although was initially disappointed to learn was a shell of the former castle because of a devastating fire in 1929, in fact was really interesting! Lovely calming atmosphere and fascinating to see the architecture that would usually be hidden. It's been lovingly protected from the elements by English Heritage and is often used now as a fabulous wedding venue. Really helpful friendly staff too!

Absolutely ace place! Brilliant value for money, polite staff, expertly-maintained grounds and a castle steeped in history. Following a devastating fire in 1929, the place had become almost a ruin. Cleverly, some inventive and creative people have made a walk round the ruins into an indoor treasure trove of architecture, history and intrigue. Stripping back the walls to reveal the core building is a master stroke. Hidden history, in fact and all the better for the need to use one's imagination. Cafe prices are fair and the cake was the best we had all week. This was a great afternoon out for us.

Well worth a visit to this interesting building, the climb up the staircase to the roof is well worth the effort for the great views. We didn't use the tearoom as we prefer something more substantial for lunch than the tea and cake on offer, even sandwiches or a pasty would have been acceptable. Our next stop that day was Corfe Castle so we had lunch there, I know a lot of visitors would prefer a few more food options, not a criticism but a suggestion for possibly extending the range on offer.

Thank you for your review, we are pleased you enjoyed your visit to us. The castle tearoom offers cream teas, cakes, snacks & ice-creams whilst the Weld Arms pub just outside of the park is able to offer lunches and something more substantial for our visitors.

Following on from Durdle Door we arrived at Lulworth Castle set in a small charming village and arrived in a reasonably priced Car Park.

The Castle set in large grounds was very interesting ( although I hadn’t realised it was basically a shell ) having been destroyed by fire and then “saved” unfortunately not fully restored.

However it was very interesting and photos of how it looked before the fire are exhibited…. Such a shame they couldn’t save it.

Fascinating details can be seen on the walls and here and there are blackened beams still in the walls.
You can climb one of the four towers and be greeted with outstanding views of the countryside from the top.

On the basement floor there are fascinating facts and actual footage of the fire which sadly destroyed the Castle.

The Tea Room does a lovely Scone Cream Tea and has a small shop within it.
There is a nice garden and picnic area close to the castle and some “ games” for the children to play.

Had it been a warmer and drier day we would have happily stayed far longer and explored the grounds more fully.

In the grounds are the families private Chapel and strangely the Village Church both of which are open to visitors.
It seems the Church was once in the centre of the Village but once the Castle was built …. They very “ kindly” removed the village and had it rebuilt outside the grounds …. Leaving the Church isolated .

As a member of English Heritage we managed to visit without advance booking + free to park well worth the yearly cost.
These well preserved castles are a must see for history lessons plus beautiful gardens.

A wonderful visit to Lulworth Castle and grounds. The car parking ticket covers the Castle, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door so you can visit all three on the same ticket. Being a Monday in November it was very quiet but that suited us well and we received a warm welcome from the lovely girl on duty for tickets.

The views from the roof of the castle were spectacular, well worth the climb. The castle interior was burnt in a fire in 1929 but what is left has much of interest, especially for those who like history and architectural history.

But the jewel in the crown is arguably St Mary's Chapel close by the castle, which was built in the 1780s as a Roman Catholic chapel and is still in use. Designed by John Tasker, it is a perfect neoclassical gem of a building and justifiably described as one of the finest pieces of Georgian architecture in Dorset. The Church of St Andrew's also close to the castle has a 15th century tower.

Overpriced wreck owners should be ashamed of themselves charging extortionate prices for a ten minute walk, lulworth cove is just as bad. Don't waste your money.

We are very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit to Lulworth Castle & Park. We do hope you managed to visit the museum & exhibits on the lower level that tell the story of the castle, the family and the fire? The beautiful Chapel of St Mary, also part of the visit, with its painted ceiling is not to be missed and of course climbing the tower to admire surrounding countryside views is well worth it.
