Old Customs House

The style of the building - much like City Hall and Dr. Todd Jones Dental Surgery house on Fort street - are I believe all designed and built by a French architect, Mensard. There is also a house in James Bay on Dallas Road by the Surf Motel that seems to be his work as well.

The old Victoria Custom House was the last stop on my “tour of the real Victoria.” It, much like the FW Francis Street Clock, is one of those landmarks that the people of Victoria take for granted because they see it every day. We know it is part of “old town” and we know it’s historically significant, but why? There is a small information plaque in front of the building, which summarizes its historical significance quite handily, but most of us only skim or don’t even bother reading such treasure troves of information. Instead, we choose to acknowledge it as a “beautiful old building,” which it certainly is, but there is so much more to it than that. In fact, as I wrapped up my “tour,” I’d come to the conclusion that this building was probably the most historically significant site I’d visited all day.

To understand why the old custom house is so significant – and recognized as a historic Canadian site in 1987 – we have to go all the way back to the time of Confederation and BC’s entry into the Dominion’s fold. Canada became a country in 1867 and BC joined the fledgling nation in 1871, following a series of arduous negotiations. Sir John A MacDonald, ever the keen old Chieftain, recognized the strategic and symbolic importance of the colony of British Columbia to the Dominion and fought hard to have it join. He wanted to ensure that Canada had a strong Pacific outlet for both his national railway and trade. It is important to note that the US, at this time, also had hopes of annexing BC. In the end, though, MacDonald – through Cartier – was able to secure BC’s entry into Confederation in 1871 after guaranteeing the national railway link + taking on the colony’s heavy debt. Once the deal was signed and ratified in the federal Parliament, the Dominion sought to have a strong presence in the new Province. Thus, the “old custom building” was built and erected in a prominent location in 1875.

In its heyday, the custom building served as an important point of entry for goods coming into the country via the Pacific coast. When the Klondike gold rush started in 1897, the old custom house became a proverbial beehive of activity as potential prospectors stopped by to obtain the necessary paperwork that would allow them to pass through Yukon customs without delay. Indeed, this was, I think, the last big “hurrah” for the building as a customs unit because the offices were moved in 1899.

That’s part of the social-economic-political history of why the old custom house is important; however, it is ultimately its architectural style that gets people talking and is also the reason why it’s recognized as a historically significant site. Built in the “Second Empire” style, this old brick and stone building is still pretty domineering on Victoria’s harbour. As a “Second Empire” building, it was meant to act as a physical symbol for the Dominion’s federal government. That is to say, it was used to emphatically state “we are here.” Thus it was, in many ways, meant to represent the “stability” of the fledgling Canadian state.

The Old Victoria Custom House is, apparently, the oldest federal building of its kind still standing in Western Canada. In that regard, it is a significant architectural landmark with a direct linkage back to the days of Confederation. In the current day, the building is still in use – it houses a law firm. Now, before we go poo-pooing lawyers, I will note that one of them was helpful and kind enough to provide a solid historic background to the building. It’s amazing what these old structures can tell us if we have but the ears to hear and eyes to see.

ブロートンストリートがワーフストリートとT時交差する海岸側に建っていた古い感じの建物でした。現在は別の用途で使っているよでした。入り口に2つの会社名らしき名前があったのですがよくわかりませんでした。

Beautiful building to note when you are walking around or on the patio of nautical Nellies. I sat at the end of the patio and looked at this building and wondered about the history of it. There is a plaque to read also. It makes for nice photos!

Not worth a special trip, but in the midst of many of Victoria's other attractions. Have a close look at the roof and window treatment - a hint of Holland, perhaps?

它雖然不是大多數人會安排的景點,
但因為我們已到了漁人碼頭,
就被這棟鮮艷的建築所吸引,
讓人忍不住停下腳步拍照留念

While you walk around Victoria Harbour you will more than likely come across this beautiful building.
One of the best in the city and we'll looked after it's only a 5 minute walk from the Harbour proper but there are many things to look at on the way.

Historic structure located on Wharf Street, just on the Inner Harbour area. Nice little lookout area located on one side of the building, worth taking taking a stroll in the beautiful area of Old Town area.
