A beautiful hill top temple in Shoghi town situated at 7200 feet (2195m). It is around 20km from The Lift Parking near The Ridge/ The Mall Road in Shimla. We drove around 6km from the Shimla main highway on to Shoghi Bypass. Last 2km of the drive is slightly adventurous as it is narrow road on a steep hill with curves to the temple. Once you reach temple, the 360 degree views are magnificent. We have to climb lots of stairs from parking to reach a newly rebuild beautiful temple having ‘Pahari” style wooden carvings. One can walk around or can relax in the open space around the temple to feel and enjoy the 2195m height in the hills. One can sit and meditate there as it is very peaceful here.

Tara Devi Mandir is located at a height of around 7,200 feet above MSL and 11 Kms from the Shimla city along the Kalka-Shimla Highway. The temple was built by King Bhupendra Sen atop the hill after he is said to have had a vision in which Goddess Tara Devi asked him to install a template there so that people could receive her blessings. He also installed a wooden statue of Goddess there. Tara Devi is worshipped as the Goddess of Compassion by the Buddhists also. The historic religious temple built over 250 years ago is visited by most tourists and locals.

We drove to a high plateau from where a forest path led us to the Temple. The path wasn’t an incline and quite easy to navigate. We ambled along, talking, taking in the sights.

‘Tara’ stands for a single point of light that helps one navigate. The Temple is 250+ years old. It is surrounded by red religious flags. Its precincts are quite huge with facilities like shops also available.

We removed our shoes and climbed a few steps to reach the Temple. The first thing that struck us was how stupendous its architecture was! The second thing was a delicate tree full of pink blossoms; what a sight!

The third was the corking scenery in front of us. Being on a hilltop, you can see kilometers in every direction. Heaving mountains & green valleys stretched out in front of us.

Standing on this hilltop, you can’t help imagining that Tara Devi is keeping an eye on all her disciples from here. Because of this sweeping view, the Temple isn’t just a pilgrim spot; it’s also frequented by tourists.

The Temple is open every day (except special occasions) and its timings are 7 AM to 6:30 PM. If you visit on the Navratri Ashtami day, you can witness a grand worship as well as participate in a fair where you can also watch wrestling competitions!

The temple and its premises were kept neat and tidy. We enjoyed the serene sorroundings as well as the magnificent view of the valley. There was no crowd and it was very peaceful.
Closeby there was the Doodhahari Vaishnavi temple which was also a place fit for prayers. A Shiva temple, 1.5 km within the forest too was closeby and worth seeing.
This place should definitely come in the "must see"list of tourists visiting Shimla.

This temple of Tara Devi ( a form of Goddess Durga ) is situated at an altitude. While this at level with Shimla in terms of height ; the best time to visit is on Sundays when there is Langar / Bhandara. This place has a series of steps and climb and once at the top there is so much space all around ; surrounded by nature. A new temple has opened , made all in wood and the architecture is influenced by tibetian and buddhist cultures. In my last visit the new temple was being constructed and this time it was all completed. There is daily aarti at 6pm during winters and 7pm during summers. One can see beautiful himalayan birds all around.

There are strict covid protocols being followed here. It is great during winters but it gets below zero soon by 5pm in the evening so so wear enough warm clothes.
The priest had a near death experience and he was recollecting the power of God and the belief and faith in the supreme power during our visit.

The temple has Tara Devi with Kali on the left and Goddess Saraswati on the right. It is beautiful and bright and there is ample space with carpets to sit down, relax, meditate, pray.

In all other months apart from December ; once can do trekking all the way down from the mountain top where the temple is located to the road level. I did this trek in my previous visit and it takes approximately an hour depending on the pace of walking.
