We had many communications with Adventures Unlimited before taking this trip. Catherine was always quickly responsive, thoughtful and clear. We did the Dzongri La trek organized by Adventures Unlimited. Adventures Unlimited arranged the transfers after we completed the Singalila trek and rested a couple of days in Pelling; everything went perfectly. The night before the trek we stayed at the absolutely delightful Ejam Residency. We were met there by Abishek, their main guide, with whom we had explored Darjeeling before going on the Singalila trek. It was like meeting an old friend again. It hailed that night, a precursor of the weather pattern for the whole trek: rain or snow at night followed by clear morning clouding up as the day went on. Abishek led us on the two-day hike up to Dzongri, which is just a place to stay in preparation for summiting a close-to-14000 point for observation of Kachenjunga and its associated peaks. He changed some of the plans for accommodations due to the weather and his choices were exactly what was needed. He was able to make things happen because he seems to know everyone who works this route. He unfailingly pointed out things of interest as we walked and had tea breaks well timed to break up the longer (and higher) slogs. On our layover day at Dzongri he got us up at 4am so we could see the sunrise light on Kachenjunga. The sky was mostly clear and it was fantastic. We strung prayer flags on the summit his grandmother gave him for this purpose. It had snowed at night so the trail was somewhat slippery and Abishek took great care to make sure we got up and down safely and reasonably confidently. After returning to camp and getting breakfast, we went out rambling with him with no objective except to go where whim took us, not on any trail. It was exhilarating. In the afternoon, he and I took another walk and saw two Mona, the national bird of Nepal. At night, when the sky cleared, Abishek called us out of our room to see the stars through the parted clouds and we saw not only clouds but a celestial phenomenon none of us had seen before and I won’t describe because the reader will think us delusional. All in all, one of the very most memorable days in my lifetime. Throughout the whole trek, we were treated to consistently excellent food prepared by the cook and his helper who were part of our team (along with the wrangler and his ponies to carry heavy stuff). The cook even baked a cake! So although the hiking is hard and at altitude, it was actually rather luxurious for this type of activity. This trek completely satisfied my wife’s lifetime objective to see the Himalayas. No one wanting personalized travel in this region should consider anyone else.

I went in mid April and too much rainfall on the way to trek. Couldn't enjoy the trek due to muddy path n leeches where ever I put my steps. Millions of leeches on the floor. Difficult to stand for a second as they can bite u immediately. Too many insects and I got skin allergies due to their bite.
It is considered as Difficult trek. Till sloka u need to walk in jungle area. Hardly find open sky.
Children should be avoidable.
My suggestions to go in either Oct or March if u r professional trekker.
Don't go from April onwards. U will surely get monsoon and leeches.
I m suffering from itchy skin due to bug bites even after months.

Unless you are constrained by time go for Goechla . Dzongri is on the way and the top is a strenuous one hour hike to summit. Both gives you splendid views of the mountain ranges. Goechla gives you the complete view of Kanchenjhunga and closer.

4200 metres above MSL is the amazing Dzongri. From the Dzongri top we can have the first view of mighty Mt. Kanchandzonga!!! The climb from Tshoka is tough till Devralia top. But its worth the effort!!

We have gone from South Dum Adventure trekkers Welfare Association -- total 10 people at end of April. At start there were rains incessantly from very start day i.e. from yuksum. We carried all rucksacks covered with raincoats and could not rest for a while at least due to leeches. First days rest was at Bakhim at a guest house. Next day the rain was slow and morning sun gave us help in drying somewhat the contents of rucksack till we start for Dzongri via tsoka. that was a long walk and we took one days rest at Dzongri on next day.
Dzongri top was somewhat cloudy and we were somewhat disappointed and spent the day in leisure.
4th Day was to move to Thansing via kokchurang. Snow started on the way while we marched past from kokchurang. and reached thansing within next 40 minutes.
That night heavy snowfall made the tents crumbled and we took shelter in the trekkers hut. next day was to go till lamuney only 4 km.
This day was a straight walk. and to go to the only hut kept for shepherds. keeping in mind we took at the shepherds hut for the night.
6th day was to wake early at 4 am to venture for goachala top. that day heavy snow was there from samity lake and just after sunrise we reached all 10 to the 1st view point of goachala.
After taking some snaps some of us decided to move back to lamuney. 5 of us decided to go further to 2nd view point.
after descending a curve down to almost 200ft at 60 degree we reached a level path covered with snow and that place was jemathang.
snow covered path became more hardy as we moved more and reached at the foot of next view point. there was gravel path and a steep path towards the 2nd view point. there was a lake like samity lake but bigger in size.
We then descended till lamuney where we took lunch and start to descend to spent the night at thansing again.

Dzongri can be reached by two days hard trek. The place is ideal to blend with the wilderness of eastern Himalayas.

Dzongri is a series of interlinked grassy meadows in the midst of deep ravines and mountains. It is almost as if it shouldn't be there and is a real surprise after the slog up the steep heavily wooded track on the way in. Views of Kanchenjunga and other peaks from a convenient hill are superb.

Dzongri Trek is the best trek I had till date. Though we took 3 days to get to Dzongri, I felt it was quite tough. Still we managed to pull through. We went on the last week of March, beyond every people's constant warning that it is off season and we won't be able to enjoy much. We took it as a challenge to get to Dzongri at the least.

On the first day, we camped at Sachen (2179m), 8 km from Yuksom. It was rather an easy trek. The next day, the steepness started to jump and towards Tshoka, it was really high. It was again close about 8-9km trek to Tshoka (2956m). Next day was the toughest day. Mostly because from Tsokha only, we could see the steepness of the route that advances towards Dzongri and we heard from other fellow trekkers returning that it is nothing compared to what's ahead. And they were absolutely right. Till Phedang, it is still manageable, but after that, the steep is almost 60 and it is really difficult. With strength, mostly mental, we managed to get to Dzongri and together shouted out our war cry! That was one of the best moments.

And yet better was next morning, when we trekked to Dzongri top to see the Kanchendzonga and his neighbors for the first time.. I was a 1km trek and the height was 100m and we made it in 15 minutes (since we started late), so we can well understand our condition. But as soon as we saw the peaks, all our pain seemed to simply fly away within a snap of fingers. We were right in the middle of this magical thing, at the top of the world with snow peaks on one side and miles of blue, clear skies on the other, with the clouds straying below. It was the moment of my life when I felt utterly satisfied and smile came out by itself. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the peaks. The trek has taught me that with confidence and motivation, I can do a tough trek with no problem.

The next day it snowed the entire day, with hail rains in the beginning. Nothing was visible at about 50m because of the fog. We enjoyed the snow to the full, dancing, singing and throwing snow at each other. The view after snow was completely different from the one we saw earlier. All the mountains that were snow-free, were now covered with snow. That night, the sky was the most clear and I was in a trance when I looked at the sky full of stars. It is something that I still see when I close my eyes. There were numerous stars, as if we were at the center of the galaxy surrounded by stars in all way.

Basanta was our guide during the Dzongri part of the trek. He was basically the cook but he guided us well. Here is his number, if you want to contact him for your trek - 8768027017. I still have contact with him.

There are some things you need to mind about while trekking. The trek taught me these too -
1. Keep drinking water at regular intervals because you might not realize but you are dehydrating every minute. Also carry enough water.
2. When you feel worked up, take some rest and continue, coz if you hurt yourself, it would be more difficult to continue. Also, do not hurry at any point.
3. Carry dry foods. You might be hungry on the way because of walking.
4. Have a lot of mental strength, self-confidence and self-belief that you can do it.
5. If you are not a regular trekker, don't even think of carrying your entire backpack, take a smaller backpack for water and dry food for the way.

An amazing place to view the great mountains of Sikkim. The climb to four Stupas gave us a good feel for the lagnitute of the place we were now in. The early, pre-sunrise, morning climb to summit of Dablhagang was a highlight.

This review is not for professional trekkers. After a lot of questions and being told that as amateurs we could do this trek we set out. The route is sachen, bakhim, tsoka, dzongri and further to goencha. All tour operators will tell you that dzongri can be done in 6 days instead of 5 for amateurs. It took us 5 hours upto sachen. the trail is narrow and steep. The scenery along is beautiful but one can hardly enjoy it as you have to be careful of every step taken. We didnt complete the trek. As we were wearing warmers and jackets and carrying the backpacks we were sweating a lot and lost alot of electrolytes which worsened altitude sickness.Go on this trek only if you have trained. I am sure the view from Dzongri would have been beautiful if only we had reached it.
