The hike is a 4.5 mile out-and-back with around 2,000' of elevation gain. Views of the lake are somewhat limited until you get to the summit, which includes some challenging rock scrambling. It is a strenuous hike with a grade that gets steeper as you go on. Definitely wear proper shoes, bring water, and hiking poles would be helpful. The views at the top are amazing!!!

Just don't go. It's hard to find and trekked out. You can't really see any views from here unless you climb for it.

I have gone up Rubicon at least once a year for as long as I have lived in Tahoe (40+ years) Always a great hike with a great view. A real grind of a climb, steep for the most part but nothing technical. Final approach is from the backside with a short easy rock scramble. It is best to study a map before you go for once you get to the north side of the approach there is rock cairns every direction you look. Pet peeve of mine, sort of one set is enough to find your way, more than that confuses most if they have not studied the map and the terrain. The trail head is up high in a residential area. Do your research, part of the adventure is finding where to park for the trailhead. Never a crowd. Running shoes are appropriate, just be aware of what the winter was like because the snow can stick around on the northern exposure of the approach.

This is a wonderful, lightly traveled trail in South Lake Tahoe.
I couldn't find it in the hiking book "Afoot & Afield Tahoe-Reno" but it is in the app AllTrails.
3.5 miles
out and back trail
2,007 ft elevation change
Peak elevation - 9183' (Lake Tahoe is about 6225')
Listed as "hard"
Even in July (the 5th) there was a lot of snow towards the peak, necessitating our group to turn back 200 feet of elevation from the peak. Granted we were wearing running shoes, so if you are wearing hiking boots, using hiking poles, or crampons it may be a different story. The beginning and end are relatively steep. This year (2019) was unusual as there was significantly more snow on the ground later in the summer than the previous years.
The trailhead is in a somewhat secluded, residential area which probably accounts for a portion of why this trail is not more crowded. All the better though, because as you get closer to the peak, the trail disappears and you have to either eyeball it and use your internal compass or consult your GPS device.
The views are gorgeous, although at times it is hard to see through the trees.
There is pretty good tree coverage, but still I recommend leaving early in the morning to avoid the heat and sunrays as much as possible.
Our favorite LT hikes are:
1. Mt. Tallac
2. Rubicon Peak
3. Eagle Falls/Lake
4. Eagle Rock/Phoebe Rock
5. Many others

This end of Lake Tahoe is well worth the drive. Multiple places to stop and savor the views. At some points you can look out either side of your car and down an incredible slope. This hike has some of the prettiest picture taking spots you could ask for!

This is an out and back trail that ascends more than 2,000'. Steep grades at the beginning, leveling about half-way up, and then getting steep again. Scrambling over large boulders near summit. Lots of mosquitoes. Snow field about 300 feet or more near summit. Trail cairns hard to follow as one negotiates the snow so mark your trail. We made the mistake of going down more to the south where there is less snow. View through a rock window at very summit-use back (west) side to climb summit. Great morning climb. We were the only three, plus a dog, on the trail for the entire trek.
