Another gorgeous island not far from downtown Auckland. Two sides to choose from for swimming. Easy walking tracks and some historical remnants to visit. And in summer there is a little store for refreshments.

An interesting island to visit, with some history to discover. Beaches on two sides, so sheltered from the wind on most days. Great walks.

We camped on Motuihe and loved it. We caught The Red Boats over from Auckland, this ferry service was great (can't complain). Booking the campsite (doc camp) was done online. Camp has flush toilets, the toilet block looks newly built and is very nice, water needs to be boiled or treated, no showers (we knew this before booking) with good open spaces to camp in.
2 beaches to swim at with close walking distance from camp. Camp is also close walking distance from the wharf. Walks also available to do on the island if you want to. Safe swimming.
Loved it, definitely recommend day visiting or camping.

Close to Auckland and providing shelter and beautiful beaches in all winds. The fishing is good too. Also worth checking the island's history

I went there to volunteer in the native plants restoration project. Took Red Boats there (the boats were very slow and took a long time to get there). This volunteer run project has done a good job revegetating most of the island, although there is still plenty of work to do.
As the boat trip took such a long time, and we had to walk quite a long way to the place where we weeded and planted, there wasn't much time left for doing actual work. This is a shame as it was a wasted opportunity.
Advise for those who want to volunteer - bring large water containers (it gets hot in the garden and you will need the water) and bring your own tools - loppers, saw, tough gardening gloves (you will need them when you deal with gorse). The tools provided were blunt and gloves holey!
Advise for the organisers - perhaps use the tractor to bring volunteers to the work area faster, this way there is more time to do the work. Perhaps also have large water containers where volunteers can fill up.

We took the Red Boats trip from Westhaven Marina and thoroughly enjoyed a day.
The boat journey is about an hour and the boat itself is not too fast so it is very comfortable and not too windswept on the top deck.
The island is big enough to spend a few hours exploring or you can set yourself up on Ocean Beach which is right by the wharf.
We hiked across the island and saw great birdlife including lots of Saddlebacks and some Fantail, Silvereye, Tui and Whiteheads.
We stopoed at Calypso Bay for a swim and had the beach entirely to ourselves. We then stopped for another swim at Snapper Bay which was more sheltered and only had a few other people on the beach.
There are a couple of discrepancies between trail marker names and those on the map but it is easy to orient yourself on the island so you would never get lost.
A superb day out from Auckland we thoroughly enjoyed the trip and it was nice to have a cold drink on the return journey.

Nice place to visit on a beautiful sunny day. Avoid the traffic and catch a ferry across for a quiet day trip away from hustle and bustle of the city. Safe and clean beach as well as bush walk. Great camping site with clean running water. Good fishing spot as well.

Love this island , 4 generations of my family have been camping here for over 20 years. The island is full of seafood, kinas, cockles, pipis, mussels and heaps of fish.

Firstly, the only access is via a very slow ferry, so the bike will need to brought over. The main track is pretty good but probably only OK for mountain bikes. The side tracks vary in quality. You should also check with the Department of Conservation if bikes are allowed on the island.
