It's a rather complex and meandering way to get here by public transport, where you must first go to Ping'an. From here the road was under heavy construction, feels like a highway is coming! For now though it's primarily a typical bumpy Chinese country bus.

The temple complex itself is rather stunning, nestled in a slope between 2 mountains that are intermittently shrouded in mist. We were the only visible tourists to the complex that day. They don't even charge money to enter (yet)

A groupe of Tu ethnic minority ladies stood guard to ambush any tourist they might see, though we were happy to pay 5 yuan for some delicious yak yogurt!

Many temples were still being built and Buddhas painted, which was interesting and the monks less camera shy than the other Xining monestaries.

All in all, a great trip, highly recommend before hoards of domestic tourists discover it and turn it into a theme park!

I liked the fact that the place was pretty far out from Xining and in some beautiful countryside (about 40 mins from Pingan), It's built onto the side of a mountain and the climbs aren't too difficult though some of the paths can be pretty slippery after some rain so make sure to wear good shoes. It cost about 300rmb to get a taxi to take me there and back. The only bathrooms are holes in the ground so make sure to have toilet paper and something to wash your hands with. There weren't many places selling food so I recommend taking food and drink with you.

We did this as a day trip from Xining. The temple itself and the surrounding area was beautiful, but I'm not sure it was worth the long & annoying trip from Xining. We took a bus from Xining to Pingan (5 RMB, about 1 hr 20 min) and then a taxi from Pingan to the temple (about 40 min). With the waiting for a cab & bus etc, it was well over 2 hours each way, with a good chunk of that being a crowded bus. We did enjoy our visit the temple, but if I did it again I would probably go to the Ta'er Temple instead because it's so much closer to Xining and easier to get to.
At the temple itself, we were able to explore a lot of the different buildings. There was hardly anyone there so it was very quiet. We followed the paths all the way up the hill to some of the buildings up on the mountainside, which was interesting.
There is technically food available to purchase, but I wouldn't count on having lunch there. There are old ladies who try to sell bowls of homemade yogurt very aggressively. There is no water available, so make sure to bring your own. There are bathrooms, but they are squat-toilet outhouses, so bring some tissue and hand sanitizer!
