Decided to take advantage of the rarely seen sunny weather to climb a few mountains. We live in Newcastle, we didn’t want to compete with the warm weather in the afternoon so we set off just after 7 am and parked at Withburn car just after 9am. We paid for 4 hours but in hindsight we should have added an hour or two as a buffer. Our parking expired 30 minutes before return, we were lucky not to get a ticket but the rush back was not a pleasant experience.
We found the climb from Withburn steady but still taxing. I am not a seasoned climber but I was still able to get by making use of a few rests. The temperature at the start was 16 degrees which was perfect.
At the top, we met people who had gone via Stryden edge and they said it was a bit more scrambly. The views at the top were breathtaking. We had lunch here but didn’t stay long because it was windy and cold.
We did not go back the same way, instead we took the path on the right of the original climbing path which was via Lower man. For some reason this was steeper than the path we chose and I think if we had come up this way, we wound have found it harder.
There is no requirement to be super fit to climb this mountain, there were people of all ages climbing and taking their time, however there was the odd Fell runner to make you feel super unfit. I would however recommend a level of fitness with the ability to scramble up rocks or brace yourself when on a downward momentum, I found it easier to use walking sticks. I would recommend loads of liquids however, there is no shelter so women would have nowhere to take a pickle.

Stunning scenery and massive achievement to get to the top . We started at Glenridding and headed up, the stairs up in the heat were hard going but they don’t last too long . We decided to do Stridding Edge to make it shorter - well it is definitely a scramble full of narrow edges, sharp rocks and a cliff to respect ✊. Not for the faint hearted, young kids or anyone scared of heights, once you are on there is not turning back . The views at the top and outstanding .

We did the walk from Swirls carpark. After research this was recommended as a safe route for families. I would advise taking extra snacks for kids as they will need it! As steep as you can get without being too dangerous but I would consider this an essential walk as it's an amazing achievement for a family. I am a good walker and the tops of my legs ached for days! Would say younger kids than 5 will probably not get to the top and average walkers "good luck!". Personally I wouldn't tackle striding edge as from the top it looks terrifying (our route avoided this) I value my families lives too much.

Striding edge, Swirral edge and Sharp edge are amongst the best ridge walks in the Lake District in my view.
My girlfriend’s introduction to Helvellyn was via striding edge.
We parked in Glenridding and began the walk up from there. I have completed this route on numerous diffferent occasions so am confident with it.
She loved the grade 1 scrambling that striding edge offers. Even the last climb didn’t seem to faze her.
We started to descend via Swirral edge but she found that to be a bit chossy underfoot. We ascended again and came down via white side which is much gentler.
In total it’s about a 10 mile round trip so be prepared for a long ish day in the fells.

Great Hike. Started at Ullswater, up Glenridding to Helvellyn summit via Swrrell edge. Stopped at Red tarn for a drink and pics. Then from summit to Glenridding via striding edge.

Oh, absolutely amazing! We did the steep ascent from Thirlmere and it was worth every step we took. The views are breathtaking and exhilarating.

Climbed this with my Dad in the summer, but the weather was atrocious, wet and misty. We parked in Glenridding and climbed striding edge through the hole in the wall . Descended via swirrel edge . The rocks were slippery and visibility poor. Fortunately we tagged behind an organized tour group otherwise we would have been hopelessly disorientated. I wasn’t really dressed for miserable weather but stuck at it . My dad and I really enjoyed our cuppa at the travellers rest at the bottom ! Would do it again in better weather as the views were non existent

Stunning walk, ruined by clowns with a music box blaring. People want to listen to nature, not hip hop . He was told multiple times. Red Tarn is Stunning. Did enjoy it there. Then up through Swirrel Edge. Very busy. Drones up on the summit which isn't allowed, then morons doing handstands against the Trigg point, but apart from the fools, well worth it. 👏

The hike up Helvellyn via Striding Edge is one of my all-time favourites. In terms of difficulty, it's pretty easy going, hit of a slog until hole in the wall but nothing too hard and then it's time for fun on the ridge. There's a side path if you want to back off but if you take your time and watch your footing and always use your toes (on the descending scrambles go down like you're on a ladder!) and hands well, then it's easy and safe enough in good weather.

Dear Nigel
Do you have any notes or hints about how to plan this walk? I would like to try it out with 5 tweens and teens and do not feel like I am silly enough that I should need to pay a guide for this. Thanks very much. All details helpful.

Hi, I am doing this walk via the edges in July. I am reasonably fit but am a bit concerned about the final ascent up to the summit from stridingedge. It looks like a steep wall of rock going off the photos. I don't have that much experience on the fells. Any tips? Thanks

Hello, it does look steep but it’s manageable - we’ve done the full circle several times in various weather conditions and some of them with kids aged between 13-16 and adults from moderately fit to fit and it was absolutely fine. The ascend from the Striding edge looks steeper but it’s actually easier than the descend from the peak on the opposite edge, but in good weather conditions and light to no wind both are perfectly doable. Key is proper hiking footwear with good traction thick sole and ankle support. You can bring poles to steady yourself if you want but you’ll be fine ☺️

Has anyone ever taken kids up here?
Rédigé le 13 octobre 2020
You will see (fit) kids walking up from Swirls car park. It’s a stiff climb and you would only want to do it with sensible kids (it would be possible to have a nasty fall from the path near the top), but there is a proper and sensibly wide path and lots of flat space at the top of Helvellyn to picnic and enjoy the view. The route is a walk, not a scramble.

If going from swirls car park is the route easy to follow?
Rédigé le 8 juillet 2020
Hi Samantha,
Not sure if you have visited yet, but we took the Swirls car park route, there is a clear path all the way up, would be very hard to get lost. 😊

Has anybody been up on striding edge recently. And if so what are the conditions like in regards to snow and ice??? THANX
Rédigé le 19 décembre 2019
Friend was up over weekend and was thick snow and I mean thick!! They ended up coming back down.

Would striding edge be suitable with a dog in your own opinion. We walk with our very active spaniel who has recently done the likes of Scafell & Snowdon. Thanks.
Rédigé le 14 octobre 2019
There is a scramble but I’ve seen dogs in there before.

We are planning to climb with our 3 boys age 8,11 & 13. Just wondering what route people recommend they are good climbers we did Snowden with them in May. We are staying in Pooley Bridge so will be driving so recomendations for where to park as well would be great. Thanks

I climbed this with my 8 and 10 year old who are good climbers and not scared of challenging parts. However I still think they are a bit young to do striding edge from Glenridding.
We drove to Keswick from Pooley Bridge then parked in the Thirlmere car park. Really enjoyed the climb and just felt it was a bit safer than striding edge way at this age.

Anybody know how to get there with train or public transportation from London?

I hear there is a frequent helicopter service from Oxford Circus to Scarfell Pike if that helps.

Free Parking? Being a tight Yorkshireman I don't like to pay for stuff like Parking especially on Common Land.
Does anyone know of any places where you can park for free on the roads around Hellvelyn on either side of it? Are there pull in's along the road where you can park for free?
I've not been for a while but seem to recall that there were unless I am getting mixed up with Scafell Pike.
If there are no places to park for free are there any car parks that will allow you to buy a ticket for two or three days? Or do you have to return to your car each day and buy another ticket because that would really annoy me? It would also annoy me if I am not able to pay by card.
Rédigé le 20 avril 2019
theres a farmers field further down the road that you can park , also some of the paid carparks were actually free due to work being done after the storm last year so you could try those first

We've done several challenging walks with our kids including Snowdon when youngest was 6 and almost got blown off the top when walking back down in 50mph winds!!!! and some hike climbs in the USA this year. Our kids are 12 and 8. They are definitely up for it but I'm concerned about the height and scary
striding edge for my 8 year old daughter. (And myself to be honest) my Hubbie whose seasoned at this kind of stuff is keen for us all to go next may. Any thoughts and tips please?
Rédigé le 30 novembre 2018
Hi. I’ve seen people of all ages walk across. All you need to consider is the weather. Wet and slippery is ok but strong winds are a problem. All the way across there are lower paths that take you down below the exposed ridge so it is passable at all times.
Enjoy!
