A very pleasant and interesting experience. Well presented and helpful plan of house provided. Would recommend spending a little extra on the audio tour which has excellent information and fascinating bonus material. Lovely gardens. Set aside at least an hour to really appreciate this significant house and those who lived there.

We decided to make use of our NT Membership while in the area and visit the house and garden where Wordsworth lived as a child. We were greeted by a friendly man and it was explained to us that if we were looking out of the window towards the front of the house we hadn't to touch anything but if we were looking towards the back of the house then we were welcome to touch items. There are a lot of different rooms to have a look in and we had a leaflet which gives information about them which makes it more interesting walking around. We enjoyed having a look round the garden as well.

I have visited this place regularly. I found the exhibition of wildlife photography by Rosalind and John Macfarlane interesting with some stunning photographs.
It’s a fairly small place so won’t take too long to get round, but worth a visit if calling at Cockermouth.

Visited during the Cockermouth music festival without realising, this meant that there was live music (which was very good) as well as the wildlife exhibit and the house and gardens itself. A lovely site, beautifully maintained.

Although we arrived near the end of the day we received a lovely warm welcome from the staff. Really interesting pieces of furniture, a lovely Georgian house with sash windows and high ceilings. Beautiful garden.

Everyone goes to Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount but this house in Cockermouth was where Wordsworth was born and spent his early childhood. It's a shame that there's very little of the original contents from his time there, but everything has been recreated as it might have been and you get a good insight into the period. The garden is also lovely to wander around.

Dove cottage and gardens was so interesting and authentic to time in history
We found the museum presented a very good insight to Wordsworth life with his sister and family. Having always loved his poetry it felt so real listening to other poets and locals relate to the reality of his words

Lovely down to earth house, where you can smell some of the herbs in the kitchen, try writing with a quill etc. The garden was lovely with lots of blossom on the trees and tulips in full bloom and the sound of the nearby river was peaceful. Good lot of information about the house and Wordsworth. Shame about the grammatical mistake in the drawing room 'Whose going to pour tea' - think Wordsworth would turn in his grave! The high street is also worth a wander with lots of tea rooms and interesting shops.

While staying in Cockermouth we decided to visit Wordsworth House and Gardens. The whole place is well preserved and provides a fascinating insight into life in the Wordsworth household. Staff on hand to answer questions and embellish everything on view.

Hi can someone please tell me whether dogs are allowed in the gardens please and how big the house and Gardens are? How long will they take to get around. Many thanks kat

Hi there Kat. Whilst we are big ol' dog lovers here at Wordsworth House & Garden, and can provide you with somewhere to sit, water and doggy treats, we do not allow dogs into the main garden. We ask one person to stay with the dog in our front courtyard and people often just swap the dog-sitting and visiting amongst themselves. We can also recommend a great little walk along the river for those dogs (and owners!) who don't like to sit still for too long.
We usually recommend between 1 and 2 hours for a visit, although of course it can vary.
I hope that helps you plan your visit, and we look forward to welcoming you here soon.

Could anybody tell me if dogs are allowed to this attraction? Thanks in advance.
Rédigé le 9 septembre 2015
Unfortunately, dogs (other than the assistance variety) visiting Wordsworth House can’t join their human companions indoors, because of the precious objects, or in the back garden, as we use some of the produce in our café. They are, however, welcome on leads in the front courtyard, if supervised.
