This is a nice place to visit. The welcome was nice from the member of staff. The house is not all that much unless you like a little history. But they do have toilets and they are free which is a big thing in the Lakes.
We went to see the red squirrels as it's one of the places to see them. The walk up to the highest point is nice but not for everyone as it's steep and uneven but I am glad we went up to the top as we did see a red squirrel. We would definitely be back but just to see the red squirrels.

As NT members we do a lot of their properties and Allan Bank is a just a bit odd. The house is fairly empty and feels run down- presumably it has been left like this intentionally but those looking for a traditional National Trust experience might be as underwhelmed as we were. Then alongside this shabby/derelict feel there is a monstrous mural in the stairwell. It feels out of touch with the surroundings - the house needs something more sympathetic. This is stark and feels like a move towards feeling ‘contemporary’. But is that what the National Trust is for? I’d say no personally.

Having said that; there’s place to buy a basic hot drink, a second hand book shop, a lovely short walk through the woods behind the house (we saw a red squirrel) and a place for children to colour. Wonderful views but that can be said for all of this area.

Glad we’ve seen it. Nothing to tempt a return visit though.

The longest time we’ve ever spent in a National Trust. An absolute pleasure. Views are stunning. We played many games of chess, painted and helped ourselves to a few hot drinks. Wonderful visit

a return here after 5 years, we chose the worst possible day with the weather! Rain Rain Rain which went on & on & on. Bought my son here for the first time, he absolutely loved it. The house has so much history & I love that they have activities for children on in the house & games too to be enjoyed by all - my son enjoyed playing smelly wellies & also painting. It’s also so laid back you can make a tea or a coffee for a donation and then sit in one of the rooms enjoying the scenery or reading a book.
My one criticism would be it’s a shame they don’t have any food, even just some cakes/biscuits to enjoy with a drink wouldn’t go a miss! A lovely dining area as well for enjoying a picnic on a very wet day. Gardens are very well looked after and cared for. Just a shame we couldn’t do the woodland walk as it was far to slippery to go up there - a return visit will be needed next time we are in the Lake District, hopefully choosing a better day for weather!

It was quite depressing returning to Allam Bank; previous visits had always been a real pleasure because of its uniqueness. It clearly had a history, part of which was the fire which had caused some damage, and the fact that there had been no attempt to rehab the building was what gave it its strange and welcoming ambience. I also seem to remember that there were many, many random books enticing you while away the day and a room with a whole library of books about climbing and mountaineering.

All the climbing books have disappeared, and there were very few other books remaining. There has been some redecoration, using shades of bland colour which are probably not appropriate to the original decoration, but worst of all was a monstrous garish mural defacing the otherwise impressive staircase. 0/10, National Trust

Absolutely fantastic place to visit with children. Our two completed the Easter Egg trail which they loved. The selection of garden games/ activities was brilliant - we got to plant a seed, make faces with natural materials, play sack races/croquet/ring toss etc etc.
The house allows you to bring picnics in and they have help yourself drinks (for a donation). There are board games in the upstairs rooms and an art room downstairs which our children could have spent ages in! The views are incredible and the walk around the grounds is lovely. Would definitely recommend to families with children!!

The building was apparently heavily damaged by fire in 2011. The National Trust claim to have "restored" it, but in fact have only resorted the structure, not the interiors. Bare floors, unfurnished, echoey, plus an awful mural on the otherwise impressive stairs.

The grounds are impressive but obviously not at their best in heavy drizzle in March.

No car park - except for blue badge holders (despite plenty of space for one). Visitors are advised to park in Grasmere (expensive).

As a National Trust member, one sometimes wonders what one's subscription is spent on. For those who are not members it's not worth the £7.50 admission fee.

We visited on a very damp morning having walked up from the village. We received the nicest welcome yet at a NT property. The Lady was so friendly and showed us into the house where we could have helped ourselves to refreshment if we wanted. She explained how the house had been gutted by a fire but they are restoring it slowly to its former glory. The Bay windows are lovely to sit in and watch the red squirrels, unfortunately they did not appear on our visit.

I attended Allen Bank with my elderly parents. There is parking available for Blue Badge holders.
Staff were friendly and helpful. You can make yourself a hot coffee or tea or have squash for the price of a donation.
My parents can no longer go for walks up the hills and mountains. They really miss the views. Getting them up to Allen Bank was a pleasant surprise, allowing them to sit in the gardens and look down to the lake and beyond.
We were lucky to have a sunny day to sit outside. But, even in the rain, you can sit inside and relax and look at the views.
Clean toilets are available
Definately be going again!!!

We are not members of national trust so have to pay entry price is £7 pp so can view house and have a free refreshment lovely gardens sadly no red squirrels we didn’t do all the walk in the garden as it gets very steep in places but has excellent views over Grasmere. House itself needs work doing to it whilst the artist inside was very good.
