We stopped over to see the manor/hall and gardens. Little afternoon walk, we didn’t realize that the parking was open as the sign said no parking, we actually stopped at the tea rooms outside, parked, ate, used washrooms and then entered the grounds. Parking is available inside the groups behind the gates. The coffee shop wasn’t busy, there were a few tables available but we’d already eaten beforehand next door. It’s a lovely spot to go for tea/ cake and a small wall afterwards. We noticed there’s campers there too, not sure about the camping arrangements but looks like a great spot! Very green and lush. The grounds were well kept and clean.

We had a couple of hours to kill while around Ambleside so thought we would try here. The gardens are not huge but the setting is lovely and the waterfall is very nice. A map would have been useful to get the best of the walks, and although we didn’t try it there is a cafe. It’s also free (donations welcome). Can’t believe we’ve never been before.

We were disappointed. We were aware that Thomas Mawson was the creator of at least some of the garden, but clearly this is neither typical nor one of his best creations. We enjoyed the small area which includes the rather well-known Grot(to), and the cafe is quite nice but the formal areas of the garden are 90% mown grass which is very underwhelming. Mawsons’s plan inluded wide and long herbaceous borders which currently have become completely neglected with nothing in them (this is June!) but weeds. Though there is no charge for entry, donations are sought. My advice would be to decide upon your donation, if any, when you leave. I’m afraid we left without, and spent the rest of the afternoon at the nearby Holehird garden, which deserves 5*.

The garden designer Thomas Mawson had a wonderful site. Beyond the formal gardens is a view to die for down to the lake with the fells behind. The gardens have been beautifully restored but unfortunately the maintenance has had to be left to volunteers, so there are not so many flowers as in other nearby properties. The nearby waterfall and the Grot should not be missed - quite spectacular.
We had coffee and cake at the cafe, which were fine. There's a proper coffee machine so all the drinks take a bit of time to prepare. There are a few tables outside by the rushing river but otherwise you have to sit inside.

Lovely-looking formal gardens from a distance. We wanted to walk around the formal gardens. But, when we entered, dogs, not on leads, that were with people working in the garden, started to attack our dogs that were on leads. So, unfortunately, we had to leave as we felt rather nervous.

Just visited the stunning gardens and the great little Cafe but would like to return to stay in the hotel or campsite.
The cafe staff were just lovely and the food is different (aubergine curry soup!) and served in very hearty portions. We stumbled upon "the grot" by chance and recognised it straight away from various TV programmes.

Faddy couldn’t not do enough for me. I went on a walk to Buckstone jump and he even got me ice and water for bladder. The cafe on side was really tasty and equally friendly and helpful staff.

Always walk through the gardens here when completing the ‘Coffin route’ from Grasmere to Ambleside. Always beautiful whatever time of the year

Visited for a walk while viewing the gardens near the fountain a male member of staff knocked on the window and offered to take a picture of us with our young baby
He was really friendly and talked about his own children, he really made our day in all honesty slim guy with black hair, sadly I didn’t get his name but a little act of kindness will stay with us for a long time!

I really enjoyed walking around the gardens recently. There is a lovely cafe nearby and the military jets nearby certainly can surprise you by their speed and noise!..

We are visiting the lakes in September and just wondering if it Is possible to get a bus (or walk) from Ambleside to visit Rydal Hall Gardens. Thank you.

Hello,
Thanks for your enquiry. If you are coming from Ambleside you can take the 555 bus, which will leave you at the bottom of the hill so you will just walk up and Rydal Hall & Gardens will be on your right.
Alternatively, you could walk from Ambleside. It is only a 25 mins walk. You can walk partly on the road and then take the coffin route which will take you straight through into the campsite area and gardens.
We hope to welcoming you in September!

Yes - dogs are more than welcome in the grounds (we stayed in the Herdy Huts to the rear of Rydal Hall) and in the coffee shop.

We do have lots of parking, and the gardens are open everyday. As ever, there is free entry to the grounds and gardens but donations to enable further work and maintenance are very welcome (suggested £3.00 per person). If you wish to park all day please call into the main hall to collect a parking permit for£5.00. Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you.
